God, she had it all. Funny, adorable, talented, sexy as hell. Her comedic timing still stands up to today's standards. Gone WAY too soon. Like someone else said in the comments, the audience could tell she was having fun, & loved her for it.

I'm a huge Todd fan too and I understand your complimentary, sentimental comment, but many film historians would say you're certainly overlooking Mabel Normand at a minimum. Spell check: And it's comedienne, not comediane. As for the clip being "brief" since the theme is Pre-Code Thelma Todd, our presenter "KevtinK" was quite generous in providing dozens and dozens of titillating visuals of Thelma in brief attire in 6 1/2 minutes. As fans know her acting skills are stellar. If our host here had chosen a different retrospective format with extended scenes of dialogue and/or entire scenes then of course 6 1/2 minutes would not adequately serve Thelma Todd, much less his theme. In my evaluation "Pre Codes: Thelma Todd" is a "keeper." I'm delighted to see an indication most agree with 677 "thumbs up" (as of 5/24/19). I'll let some other poster have a crack at what could possibly be behind the 24 negative votes.

She worked with Laurel & Hardy, the Marx Brothers, Wheeler & Woolsey, Charley Chase, Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante. That's a pretty impressive comedy resume. We lost her way too soon.

Not only worked with them, she held her own and made all her scenes better. One of my favorites is the double entendre scene with Stan in drag from Another Fine Mess. She legitimately cracks up listening to Stan talk about "housemaid's knees".

Great job of capturing so many clips to show Thelma's physical acting attributes. Actors who spent time in front of "silent" cameras certainly knew how to tell stories with their bodywork! And this clip makes obvious that early Hollywood directors considered Todd a great foil for the grand comedians of the day. Not an easy job for an actor.

I've watched all of the documentaries about your life and death. And there is nothing to say but I'm sincerely sorry that we lost such a wonderful actress and that there will always be a suspected bunch of characters. Thelma Todd rest in peace somewhere there is an answer.

From Lawrence, Massachusetts, Thelma intended to become a schoolteacher, but her looks started winning her beauty contests, and stardom beckoned. These clips show her body on display. She had a gift for comedy, two decades before Lucille Ball confirmed that looks and comedic ability were not incompatible with each other She was at the top of her career when she died mysteriously in her own car in its garage in 1935. Todd had made a terrible marriage to a figure connected with organized crime; it is believed that she was murdered because she wouldn't give a piece of her restaurant to the mob; specifically, Lucky Luciano. "Hot Toddy" is a good read.

I liked her best in "Fra Diavolo" with Laurel & Hardy from 1933. One of Hal Roaches' best movies I think. Todd just looked stunning in the Rokoko style costumes they used in it.

I stand corrected: Thelma was found in her car in the garage of Jewel Carmen, near her restaurant, Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe. Her death was ruled accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, but officials at the time were corrupt, and could be bought off.

Have always been told told that I am a "distant cousin" of Patsy Kelly. While searching my family tree, I "discovered" Thelma Todd. Such a tragic loss that we lost someone so; beautiful, talented, and funny, so young. R.I.P. Thelma. You are not forgotten.

Wow...until I watched this I never realized what a live wire Thelma was. I just read Hot Toddy and it doesn't convey just how physical an actress she was. I see now why she was paired up with comedians a lot. She was great...terrible taste in men, though.

I’m somewhat skeptical about a lot of what’s in Hot Toddy. I’d recommend Ice Cream Blonde by Michelle Morgan for a different take on Todd’s death.

Most of us think of Thelma supporting Laurel & Hardy, but when your CV also supports the Marx Brothers, Keaton and Durante, Wheeler and Woolsey, plus Barrymore, Chase, and Pitts, thaty's quite a resume. And the "Hello, Sam" at :32 was from the original sound version of Maltese Falcon, ten years before the Bogart/Astor film. Great compilation, by the way.

Todd only appeared in 6 films with Laurel and Hardy, one of which, her last, “The Bohemian Girl” is from 1936, well out of the pre-Code era, so that left me five to pull from. There are clips from “The Devil’s Brother” and “Unaccustomed As We Are.” My original cut of the video included a clip from “Chickens Come Home” but the video was too long. Sorry to disappoint you.

Great Compilation of an overlooked actress of the 30s. Its a shame that her tragic death has overshadowed her talents. She was a beautiful woman who could do slapstick with the legends. She was trying to get more serious roles at the time of her death. We'll never know how great an actress she could have been.

Wonderful, inspiring woman and pretty underrated, just like her co-stars. Could you please do a video on Patsy Kelly? I think her temperamental and straight forward character was quite refreshing and as an uncloseted lesbian she was inspirational, too.

A LOT of these actresses early deaths (whatever actual causes) coincided with the advent of the Production Side's enactment in 1934; with the exception of Carole Lombard, Harlow, Todd, and leader-remembered stars like Lyda Roberti would either moved onto 📻 or eventually 📺, if not retiring from film altogether.

I don't appreciate black and white films either. I LOVE them. I think one has to grow up with old comedies to appreciate them. Maybe many of the younger people consider black and white films primitive and don't care about them because of it. But if one takes a look at them one sees how much effort and great talent was put into those films.

The picture of Joan opening my pre-Code videos confuses a lot of people. I just use it for continuity between the videos and because the black chair is a good place to put the titles. Plus the photo of a naked Joan Blondell is the epitome of pre-Codes. Joan is my favorite, too. She’s featured in many of my pre-Code video clips.

Great! What type of editing process do you use? How do you fast forward through videos, searching for scenes? Thinking about doing one of these pre-code compilations.

Thanks for your interest. I use iMovie. For the feature length films, I extracted Thelma’s scenes and loaded them in. For the shorts, since she’s in them throughout, I load the entire short. I then go through and pull out sequences that may work, loading them into a timeline. Once I have that, I develop “themes.” For example: Thelma’s greetings; the pre-Code stuff; Thelma angry/fighting; dancing; close-ups. I then find music to lay under, and edit the sequences to the music when possible. I try to keep the videos to about 5-minutes. The first cut on this was nearly forty, so getting this one down to 6 1/2 minutes was the best I could do. If this video gets enough interest, I may put another one together. I have lots more Thelma. Good luck on your video. They are a lot of work, but really fun to do.

Sure wish that some of these would be released, professionally, to DVD. There are a lot of interesting Hal Roach shorts that still have not been seen, even by the staunchest Roach fanatic. I just wonder where you got all that terrific LeRoy Shields music from the original Roach comedies...always so memorable from the LAUREL AND HARDY or OUR GANG comedies. Thanks for posting this!

I’d love to see a collection of Thelma’s shorts, something like was done many years back with the Rascals. A few years ago, TCM aired many of Todd’s Roach shorts, both with Zasu Pitts and Patsy Kelly, so that’s where many of the clips are from. For the audio, I just separated the audio track from the video, usually during the opening credits where there is no dialogue, and just laid it under the edited clips. It’s amazing how versatile the Roach music is.

A sophisticated beauty who just liked to play the knowing Dumb Blonde, and she could act as well! Her death was most likely an accident, she simply warmed up the garage by running the car. West's deathbed confession, that he killed her, can be explained that in locking her out he felt that he had caused the death. A sad end to a still growing career, she had the lot, looks and intelligence, but poor taste in company she kept. Groucho Marx adored her, but commented on her other friends and her drinking.

Yes, that's Joan Blondell. To provide a bit of continuity, I open all of my pre-Code videos with a picture of her. The black chair in this series of very pre-Code publicity photos of Blondell allows for my opening title. In later videos, I use the publicity photo of Blondell from "Convention City" (1933). Glad you liked the video.
