Gem, there is one thing missing. You'll need a very large midge net to suspend from your waist for number 2s, or your bottom will soon resemble a well-used dart board. 😂

Yes; I've already had that experience and have a net!

New subscriber. That's a lot of stuff to carry for two weeks. Have you thought of taking enough for one week and then posting yourself the rest of the stuff, somewhere on route. I'm guessing that you are not in the wilds for the whole two weeks and will go through towns or villages along the way, which should have a post office that you can collect from. Also, you could then post yourself back some stuff that you no longer need. It's something that the American long hikers do when they walk thousands of miles.

Thanks, Andy, for the suggestion and subscrition. Yes; I know it's a lot, and since making the video I have modified it. I'm learning all the time. Good idea about the post office. I don't plan on walking thousands of miles. Just to get away from people for a bit and to do what's right for me. I can carry the pack comfortably (I hauled a double bass around Paris for years).

I totally understand about getting away from people. Have you thought of using a rucksack liner, possibly a black bin liner, to protect your clothing and sleeping bag, from getting wet, instead of using stuff sacks. Also, as an emergency backup stove, using an alcohol burner stove, instead of carrying two gas burners.

@@andyclarke7265Thanks, Andy. Yes, I've eliminated stuff sacks and will think about bringing the Trangia (my favourite stove).

Hi Gem, also preparing for a long backpacking trip on a budget. Just some thoughts which you can take or leave 🙂 ….I bought a cheap set of digital kitchen scales to weigh *everything*. Even the stuff sacks add up! That water bottle looks very heavy (ordinary disposable plastic water bottle instead?), maybe ditch the bowl (maybe small multi-purpose microfibre cloth and dab of soap), in a video you said you’ve accumulated a lot of tents etc - perhaps sell to fund other purchases, I bought a £40 sleeping bag and saved 1kg! (synthetic Snugpak), get tiny travel bottles for a couple of £ and decant first aid & toiletries, that spoon looks like steel and heavy, if so get a cheap or free plastic one instead…. Dunno, basically question every single thing going into your pack and its weight. Secondly, you’re practising the hiking 👍but maybe also practise sleeping in a tent - back garden, friends garden, local wood, build up confidence in that also. Lots of UKposts research on your route too so you're mentally prepared. So jealous you have a water filter & a dehydrater! I have neither!! You’re gonna do great, enjoy your adventure 🙂

Thanks pauls... some useful suggestions here. I'm not as stupid as I obviously come across to some people! Since making this video, I have cut down, decanted some, learnt more. The spoons and water bottles aren't heavy: I wouldn't buy a steel spoon. I have tents etc. of different sizes and types - not doubles, so I don't want to get rid of those - and of course I've researched, practiced, prepared - for nearly 2 years. I wouldn't embark on something like this if I hadn't! That would be pretty arrogant of me. I'll be in no rush. If I get tired I'll rest, and if I can't handle it I'll come home. I'm proud of myself for even attempting this and of the mass of new skills I've accumulated.

Hi and yes, that's a lot to stuff even in a 85L pack. Most of us start off carrying too much. Even now I still carry about 17 kg after losing stuff and upgrading to lighter items. And only because I like to be comfortable and prepared for the unpredictable. Weigh your self with pack and without. I think if you exceed 12 kg, even when you are fit and strong enough, you will be miserable. Try out half a mile and estimate if you could carry it for 6 hours at least. Keep up the good spirit, cheers.

Yes, I'm doing my best. I have been training, learning more each day and as I said in the video, I can't afford any more light weight gear right now. I'm not planning on hiking miles and miles: just to have time out in beautiful surroundings away from other people. Heroes of mine who did this kind of thing from 100 years ago didn't have all of this tech and they managed just fine on common sense, wisdom, living and learning.

It is amazing how fast the weight and size of a pack can increase. Especially in colder weather.
@GemintheMud

Yes, indeed... Right now it's too much weight-wise and it's crushing my head! I don't want a miserable experience. I'll keep researching, packing and unpacking and see what gives. I'm learning so much each day and no knowledge / experience is wasted...
