Yes, many (or most) catholic priests in the past abused their power and unfortunately some still do but that doesn't justify generalizing them. By the way, as a protestant, I hate the Catholic church and its teachings but I still love the people who follow it. The same way a parent can hate what their child is doing, for example illegal drugs, but they can still love their child. If there is a conflict between his conscience and his office, then he ought to have the integrity as a man to resign or change his policies.
