You're both wrong. Obama and I are the same race: half-black and half-white. No matter what he erroneously identifies himself as, he will always be mixed. It doesn't matter what white people say, or what black people say, we are of both races and yet of neither at the same time. Obama can lie to himself, but he can't lie to me.

Although a huge fan, not sure that is true. I think his presidency was a milestone, he certainly is an important figure in our history. However the US had many important and great President, to quote someone I forgot who, some were born great others had greatness trust upon them. Let me mention a few Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy and Reagan, not a fan of the last one, but compared to what we have now certainly, acted with class, and an eloquent speaker.

everyone is something before american except white people. Indian American, African American, Asian American..and native Americans and they are from here. but white people are just Caucasian, why not white American or British American (that one might be to far fetched) ? even though many of the people with these titles have never been to those countries or even know the culture of them. I'm black (I love being black but I also love America, don't other races deserve the same respect) and honestly it'd be nice to just be called an American in my own country, I have to go to another country to be called American...that's sad. why can't everyone just be American. Race is gonna be the biggest issue in this country until everyone is dead and gone.
@pilsung26
@pilsung26 7 років тому
Just about every white American I've known more than a minute references the European country they trace their ancestry to. They have parades, feasts, etc to celebrate their heritage. The minorities you listed are often the only ones questioned as to why. People like you and others who care will continue to work for that day when our country lives up to its creed. We've made a ton of progress and many of the most prominent figures who got us here never saw the fruits of their labor. We'll just have to be content to know we try.

Not only do many Italian Americans and Irish Americans take pride in their heritage but also leave out the American part and simply say they're Irish or Italian.

@TheHolachica10
@TheHolachica10 7 років тому
I have to agree with the other commenters. White Americans love to point out the heritage of their ancestors even when they never been to the country themselves. Irish American, Italian American, Scottish American, etc. I don't see why African American should be an issue. It doesn't hold any less or more weight then the title of American. What it shows is your heritage and the unique story of your culture in America. Why been ashamed of that? There are so many traditions and traits passed down from generation to generation that is rooted to African culture in African American families. It's a beautiful thing. It's doesn't and shouldn't make you feel like the 'other.' The beauty of America is not that we are a melting pot but a mosaic; so many different ethnicities and cultures that do nothing but add to the definition of American. Issues only come when we don't respect those difference or don't choose to learn more about those different from us.
@pilsung26
@pilsung26 7 років тому
Agreed there's no thing as quote "white" or "black" culture. The general tone of your comment seems quite congenial to honest discussion. So with that spirit of kindness in mind. Please consider how the definitive article 'the' ahead of ANY "race" carries some baggage.

Chihauhua- good answer! To address the sensitive issue of racism is not only to talk it out, but talk it out the right way. That person just demonstrated how not to do it. Its ok if you object to someone else's viewpoint. But it creates barriers when you see their viewpoint as a threat to you personally. And EVERYONE is guilty of that at one point or another, including me. A friend of mine, who is white recently comfessed that he was happy when Obama became president but uneasy when he saw Obama ASSUMING THE ROLE as the leader of this country that historically has been led by white men. That was honest of him and I told him I must apply that same approach when it comes to Trump. As a person, I can't stomach his ego, his larger than life personna of himself. Many are hyping him up before he has actually carved out a legacy as to what kind of president he will be. Me, Im trying to be reasonably cautious, trying to look beyond all the nonsense that comes out of his mouth, and patiently see what he actually DOES. If only the news media would be honest about presenting the facts. Not as they want people to see it, bit as it actually IS.
@mastertheillusion

Do you honestly expect to ever get post-racial when you still refer to you own president as an African-American and not just American. Tip: Not a chance. You need to be far smarter than this low, very low bar.

By necessity, you have to be careful because any thing you say can move markets or start wars. But you do look for moments of human connection, and in some ways those end up being the moments that are most meaningful." Barack Obama explaining why Donald Trump became President.

I think the big problem with "racism" is that the concept in itself is based on a very old and already dated idea: that there are several races. There's only one race, and it's the human race. There are ethnicities? Sure, but they're just the amount of melanin on someone's skin. There's nothing else, biologically speaking, that marks the difference between a "white" and a "black" person. Nothing significant enough, at least, to justify all the social differences people of those two groups face everyday. And I mention both groups because, yes, there's a lot of discrimination towards black people from white people, but there's also discrimination from black people towards white people, and I don't think any of those is different, less important, less grave nor more justified. You can understand why something happens, but that doesn't mean you justify it. Being from where I am, Uruguay, and living in Montevideo, the capital city, I simply can't understand how racism, or better called ethnicism, comes to be. And I'm writing this from my computer in the city that's very well documented as the home one of the biggest slave ports in South America during colonial times, and yet ethnicism isn't that much of an issue here. It is an issue, and things related to it do happen, but not as often as they do in the US, and I truly can't understand how that's possible, being that our country and society are much younger than the US's.

Too bad our President was bought and paid for by the health care industry including the drug companies. He could have worked a little harder and passed a decent health care law that would never be repealed. It will be repealed because people like my 27 year old daughter had premiums double in 2017.
