If I recall correctly, Valerian was based on a French comic/graphic novel. They tried to force like 5 of the storylines into the movie. Which is why it seems like it's just all over the place. But it is an absolutely gorgeous movie. Definitely a "watch at least once" kind of movie.

Ghost in the Shell is an outstanding choice for the top of the list.

Michael Wincott is a national treasure. Such a great actor, such gravitas, and such PRESENCE.... He is criminally underutilized in the film industry, but that's what makes an appearance by him so special.

Bruce Dern ("Freaks") was a "hip" and very popular actor of the Vietnam generation (late 1960s-mid '70s). Always a pleasure to see him. (I'm old).

Thanks for giving "Split Second" props. Rutger Hauer is at his most likeable, the film blends detective noir with s.f. and Kim Catrall is in it at her peak. Ir does an excellent job of world-building in the "Blade Runner" mode and Hauer's character is one of my favorite film heroes from the '90's.

Another great list. Darren Van Dam (Van Damme) has saved me so much time with his best of lists. More than half the time I go to streaming services without a plan I end up browsing for an hour or so then giving up in frustration. Thanks.

I'm a regular and don't often comment, but your description of Monsters hit all the magic points: What I mean, is, I already like and have seen almost all of what you have seen, BUT, your description for Monsters caught my attentions I must admit, sometimes I don;t pay attention to the video aspect... but, AND I haven't seen this version of "Monsters" and your description (while oft reused vocabulary) made my brainstem twitch. I know me - that implies something more worthy of a mind-feast! I am excited! Thank you for your sustained presence and performance. And "Coherence" was sincerely an unexpected 10/10.

I know you're just talking about movies, but in terms of sci-fi TV shows, *Peripheral* was one of my favorite series this year. Just stumbled upon it after never hearing anything about it, and I was shocked that such a great sci-fi series popped up on Prime with barely any marketing.

The Arrival actually holds up, and is still a great movie, with some nice themes..... The Tomorrow War was supposed to be a big theatrical release, but then Corona happened. Great movie. Very high production values throughout, a complete and serious movie. Also a great movie. If you haven't seen it, that has to be #1 on this list.... The first time I saw it, I was shocked.... This is on Prime?? For free??? What???? It's waaaay too good to be on Prime for free, as a new release....

Coherence is in my opinion one of the most underrated movies of the past decade. I urge people to make it through the mildly confusing start because the payoff is 💯 worth it.

I remember watching Ghost in the Shell for the third or fourth time (about 20 years ago) and finding things out about the plot that I'd overlooked on my previous times watching it, both in dialogues and in images. It's so full of hints and winks. The story is great, and when it came out, the animation quality was top notch. And it still is! ♥

Monsters is by far the best Sci Fi movie I've seen in the past 10+ years. Just watch it. The story is riveting and the effects are perfect.

Lets face it a lot of people hate on the Tomorrow War simply because they hate Chris Pratt for religious and political reasons, not because the movie is not good, he could be in the equivalent of Citizen Kane and they would still hate on it.

Split Second was always a favorite of mine- especially when I first saw it back in high school when it came out. I bought my first pair of round sunglasses because of Rutger Hauer’s in the movie 😆

Great list, scifi is my favorite genre, "Nope" is a modern classic for sure. "Screamers" is a hidden gem! "The Tomorrow War" was pretty good. "Turbo Kid" and "EEAAO" are fan-freakin'-tastic, hahaha!

I've always thought A Quiet Place was exceptionally dumb. Let Burt Gummer show you how to do it: Send some toy, remote-controlled cars out with dynamite on them, also remote-controlled! Problem solved! The problem with Valerian was the worst casting job of all time! It's supposed to be about a grizzled Harrison Ford type; but these kids just aren't believable in those roles. Aside from that, a lot kewler of a list than what the algorithm gives me for best Sci-Fi movies. No comic book hero(s) after comic book hero(s) movies, for one thing.

Gotta luv Buckaroo Banzai / Robocop in anything. Screamers is excellent. He was excellent in The Last Ship also.

Good stuff. The 2004 "Primer" you didnt mention is another cool one that no one really knows about.

Valerian the City of a Thousand planets is one of the most epic visual eye candy you can ever watch. I recommend seeing it in 4K as large of a screen as possible. Luc is one of my favorite directors, most of his movies have great emotional journeys that end with the reminder that love is the answer to the meaning of life.

Highly recommend "Monsters," "Freaks" and "Nope." Though it's not as great as "Get Out" (by the same director), "Nope" is still very very good. Worth renting. "Freaks" is in my top 15 for the Twenty-Teens decade. "Monsters" is well worth the ride, the little movie that you don't think can, but it does.

I would love to see more Valarian and Loralee. That movie was Wow.

Great list. One thing to mention. Valerian has one of the most iconic intros of all times. And I mean "apocalypse now"-level. You will never ever again listen to space oddity and not see these pictures!

The Arrival is one of my fav's from it's first release. I thought it was very well put together. I watched Screamers when it was first released. A Peter Weller favorite of mine. When I watch reviewer checking out the newer War of The Worlds I always tell the to check out that first one. Oh yeah. I'm going to be checking out this list. I'm always looking for new sci-fi. I agree with only three of your choices, The first is Screamers. the adaption of this short story to a full length film is not only accurate, but also entertaining and gripping.. The Second is Valerian. I have the pleasure of reading ALL of the original graphic novels including the one that the movie is based on. My only major complaint was that in the graphic novels, the male protagonist was much older; sort og the senior member of the diplomat / trouble shooting team. The female member on the other hand is the younger, more capable member of the team who is deeply infatuated to her senior partner; almost a father figure complex as a matter of fact on her part. The movie decided to change this making the male member as young as his female counterpart, perhaps to avoid any ackward notions among the audience. On the other hand, the female proyagonist is no longer noticeably shorter - almost petite - than her senior. In addition in the graphic novel, the girl has a darker skin tone and some Asian features while the movie decides to make her classic beauty caucasian. The third is, of course, Ghost in the Shell. I am a fan of anime and manga. My only complaint with the movie is the absence of the manga author's trademark humor and sarcasm that was a fine counterpoint to the hard edge of the cybernetic setting. Still the animated movie is veyr good. can't say the same for the live version where I have a lot of issues about the casting choices The actress chosen to play Kusanagi is too short, and thus ends up looking stout, rather than svelt. her subordinate, Batou is physically too comically bulky in the live action version. And their boss whi , in the manga, is short, drarfish, but slimly built ... the live action movie gets that completely wrong. i did not like the live action movie at all.

Monsters is a great movie, but it is not about invading monsters, it is about an encroaching alien ecosystem. Humans fighting it causes most of the damage. Also, the beginning is the end, look carefully frame by frame at the beginning and match up the radio chatter. Completely changes the story, that's all I will say. Liked many of the choices, but sorely disappointed that The Man From Earth didn't occur on the list at all when it should have been in the top 3. Okay, yeah, Ghost in the Shell probably should be number 1, but Man From Earth should be close behind. It is an amazing story, made on a shoestring and is captivating. Mostly set in one room with one person posing an incredible possibility that becomes more real as the afternoon continues. Must see!

I am a connoisseur of horror, I love it so much. Lately I have been thinking its time to move away from the horror category and your list is my first foray, thanks.

Ghost in the Shell is a timeless classic masterpiece, whether or not you like Anime, as Masamune Shirow has his own take on the genre, creating entire worlds and characters in his own particular style. If you are still unsure, just watch the opening credits scene, which is a masterpiece on its own right, leaving its mark in the movie industry. I believe this was one of the most influential sci-fi movies of its time, with visuals that were unbelievable for the time it was made, and a philosophical story that will give you a lot to think about.

Mery Shelly's Frankenstein is not about bring some back to life, it is about creating life and the ethics of science. Frankenstein's monster is a totally new being, bring up even more ethical questions about responsibility to a life you create

Of Course Ghost In The Shell is number one, and rightfully so. I would put EEAAO over Nope, because it totally blew me away when it came out and still does (one of those movies you can easily watch several times and still discover new things with every watch), but that's just imho. The rest of your list I have seen maybe two thirds of, so there are some recommendations I will have to check out.

The Live action version of Ghost in the shell is excellent and really underrated. It got criticism for SJ being the lead but she is excellent. One of the best Animation adaptations. That's an idea for another list.

I think i could watch NOPE a zillion times, i loved it, the monster was unique and the characters were so well developed, i love it

I have both "Split Second" and "War of the Worlds" on DVD. While only available to rent another great SF movie is Kurt Russell's 1998 "Soldier" (which I also have on DVD).

I loved Rutger Hauer as a character actor. “Blood of Heroes” is one of my all time favorites, “Lady Hawke” is awesome, and “Blind Fury” was great. Lots of great movies with him.

I rate Screamers and The Tomorrow War with Ghost in the Shell as top 3 in that list. Screamers still holds up well.

Freaks is so good. I stumbled on it a year or so after it came out. I went in blind, which is the VERY best way to watch it. This movie has stuck with me since then, thats 5 years or so. I don't know how many movies I've watched and forgotten in that time, but this one stuck with me.

You reminded me of The Dead Zone the series which is supposed to be playing on Tubi. I think i will watch that while i work today

Valerian is on of the most underrated films to date. Period! Look at the movie on a 75” or larger OLED screen, QD-OLED preferably, and you will absolutely be amazed!

I'm a sci fi nut, everyone in my family are sci fi nuts and we ALL think The Tomorrow War was excellent. The stairwell scene and the scene of the aliens running down the street will give you goose bumps!

I am definitely NOT angry about your #1 - Ghost In The Shell is a groundbreaking anime film and the remake with Scarlett Johansen was pretty blah in comparison, and the fact of the unnecessary whitewashing of the character was a big minus for me. There were many Asian actresses who could have filled that part much better. War of The Worlds is as good today as it was 70 years ago, and is still better than what passes for sci fi today. It is true art. The 1950's gave us so many amazing films that have stood the test of time right up to today, December 6th, 2023. War of the Worlds, THEM !, Gojira ( the original Japanese cut, not the chopped-up mess the Western cut was), Rodan, Forbidden Planet, When Worlds Collide, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Thing From Another World, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Invaders From Mars, This Island Earth, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Not of This Earth, The Fly and so many others. This is a great list of films to choose from on Amazon Prime. Quick question, do you know if Buckaroo Banzai is on streaming anywhere ?

Excellent list. Hopefully Prime video is open to more alternative productions. For an amazing story on a shoestring budget, I would recomend 'The Super Deep. Yes, it's russian and yes it's subtitled but what a movie. I would also recommend Dark City, The Girl with all the Gifts and Cargo.

That flick Nope was fantastic I thought, there was a scene in it that scared me as much as any movie I've ever saw. I literally got chills throughout my entire body. Scared me so bad. The movie that scared me the most was called Life I think. Had a bunch of really good actors in it that were on a space station an they got something to come alive that they had found from Mars. Damn thing got big, strong, fast an hyper smart. I had to shut it off a couple times to finish it, literally scared me that bad. Having admitted that I got trolled pretty good online for being a puss. I'm okay with that, I felt what I felt an that movie scared me to death. I'm grateful I can get absorbed by movies like I do, it's an escape from real life that I love. Can't remember the actors names, Jake Gillanhal (I know I spelled it wrong), the guy that played the Green Hornet and the funny super hero that wears red that has a foul mouth. Can't even remember the name of the movie. Red something I think. Bunch of other good actors as well. Life the flick scared the shit outta me, can't even watch it again, that damn alien terrifies me. My favorite scary movie ever is 28 Days Later, that's a truly great movie that happens to be horror. Most horror flicks are stupid to me an far too predictable. Not that one, that is really a great movie. 28 Weeks Later was good as well. 28 Days Later an Life are my two favorite scary flicks but Life is too scary to rewatch for me.

The original War of the Worlds is, frankly, one of the best movies ever made. The remakes blow as far as I’m concerned.
