i'd say needle and thread first. maybe then an inkle style (band) loom for making straps. easiest method would likely be cotton, though i would love to see a taming of a wool producing creature. however, being aware of the rainy seasons as well as not knowing how he would pen said creature durring the story seasons, i dont see this as immediately viable.
@frankohero
@frankohero 4 роки тому
@@Minion0ne I have not yet seen "primitive" channels making leather. Needle and thread are not a problem to build for "Primitive Skills". No idea what creatures deliver wool in these countries. I have never seen sheep there. I would put stuff (like the mask is made of) on the bottom of an water-purifying-system (to prevent charcoal-particles from slipping into the purified water). For real clothes, wool is needed? But blankets or other mats don't need wool. Hmmmm.

If this was hardenable steel you may wish to temper it. Otherwise you could bring the piece to a cherry red temperature and stick it into a bucket of charcoal powder for three hours. The piece being big enough to hold the heat and coupled with that the insulating properties of the charcoal you would be able to case harden the piece. Then quench like you did in the video.

I noticed that the head to your hammer keeps sliding back each time you strike (presumably the reason you keep flipping the hammer) this would mean there is a loss in the energy transfer between the hammer and the metal. And sometimes even a small amount of movement can mean an exponential decrease in how much energy is transferred directly to the metal. Maybe try making a handle that would hold it more securely. It would keep the head in place and that would also improve the effectiveness. Also another tip, you may want to consider rounding one side of the hammer. Rounded hammers can be very helpful in moving more material

@nickv8334
@nickv8334 4 роки тому
@@SoralTheSol we have seen those video*s. point is, the bloom from video 1, is not what he uses to make the hammer and blade at the end of video 2. he switched it out somewhere halfway the video with store bought steel. and this is not even a matter of, does he has the skill or not to use the bloom. one of the big give aways (not the only one) that it is not the same material is that when u process a bloom, you lose a lot of material as slag, and even more as scaling due to oxidation. so unless he was forging in a vacuum or in a inert gas, he would not have been able to make those two big tools out of that bloom. also, a second problem is that the steel of tools is to clean with no cracks or visible inclusions. this is possible to make with bloom steel, however, you would have to fold it, and he did not show any folding. but even worse, if you fold the material, you lose eeeven more material.
@workwithnature
@workwithnature 4 роки тому
@@SoralTheSol He unfortunately skipped that step. If you look closely you notice right away that he was not even hitting any bloom. Sometimes you don't get one. He was hitting slag only. how did you ever manage to make you hammer with a rock and mallet though??????

If you by a piece of round hardenable steel and heat it to an orange heat you could use two tough stones to shape the middle. But if you want to make a better hammer you would make a punch and drift and put a hole in for the handle. Me thinks he went through quite a few handles at this point.

How long does it take to make so much iron? It looks like you have tons available, and such high quality too!

A few hours shopping around the town lol On a serious side, it could take up to half of the day if you in a iron rich environment
