I think a prison should aim to deter criminals from crime and reform the prisoners. We can clearly see the reform rates are higher in countries such as Germany who are less strict since they are turning the prisoners into better people and allowing them grow and learn. Whereas in many western countries they use harsher punishments and the reform rates are much lower which speaks volumes. I think the way Germany are going about it is fair and makes sense.

The thing is that JJ is basically right with that first statement about free food. For example in Sweden, the prison life is so easy on you that a homeless person would very much profit from comitting a crime and living there. This is not a joke.

Yeah, someone wrongs you then you want to see them punished, but if the result of that is they leave prison and just do it again then all that is happening is the creation of more victims. Those people will probably also go on to have children, and raise them in a way that they also go on to commit these crimes. The only way to break the cycle is to educate and show people a viable alternative path, and also properly support those in poverty. Yes it will mean for a period that criminals might be perceived to be having lesser punishments, but like in Norway, a reoffending rate of 16%? That can only be a good thing. It is enough to break the cycle. Its a no brainer.

I broke into a house to get warm when I was 17 and did 2 years in prison in S.C and yes in the grits there would be Crickets grass grasshoppers all kinds of little bugs and insects from being grind up and if we was on lock down they would give us a bag with 2 Pieces of bread and half an orange or half an apple for 3 meals

In the US depending on the state, but Prison Food can be a form of punishment. In fact there have been court cases where the food was considered a form of torture. It's called Nutraloaf, which is looks essentially like a form of meatloaf, but looks and tastes incredibly vile. And as for Korea, you really shouldn't compare a fake prison with a actual one. In a real one, they essentially pack prisoners in a cell like sardines, and the food isn't that great. Also the Argument about rehabilitation vs punishment. In my opinion it largely depends on the crime itself. I think for alot of levels of crimes, we should work more towards rehabilitation to make prisoners reform into productive members of society. But there are plethora of crimes and criminals that truly deserve and need punishment instead of rehabilitation. So it's a difficult question. I feel that Prisons should have levels to them, weeding out those who it's better served to focus more on rehabilitating them, and those you need to just throw away the key. I think a way to do this, is through having general transitional Prisons which are like traditional Prisons, and where prisoners spend some time in, and depending on the crime and for extra factors like good behavior and give some rehabilitation options at the transitional Prison, and see how it effects the prisoners and then after a bit of time. Send Prisoners who show positive results to Rehabilitation prisoners, that act like a controlled environment, that act more like a college like dorm system, that is similar to Norway Prisons and focus heavily more on rehabilitation. Then you have your heavy max Prisons for those who deserve to be punished and show no signs of wanting to rehabilitate. Then you have Life Prisons for those who will never get out, and have two varations ones where they simulate more normal life conditions for those who show good behavior, and a more harsher life prison for those who commit crimes while in prison and show no effort of good behavior. And prisoners can transition between the types depending on their behavior in their current prison. Those wanting to transition to a better prison needs to build up a history of good behavior and those who do bad stuff and misbehave in prison can be transferred to a more harsher prison. This way you could have a healthy balance between rehabilitation and punishment. Likely seeing better results. Also anthor thing that needs to be done is reduce the osctrisitasion of ex-cons when they re-enter society and make it easier for them to re-enter the workforce. Prisoners need to be taught real life skills and need to be educated and trained to re-enter the workforce, but they also need opportunities when they re-enter society, this could be achieved by special programs between Prisons and workplaces to connect ex-cons to job opportunities. But that's my opinion on it.

The Norwegian one is a low security prison, that is meant to rehabilitate and prepare them for release when they have 1 year left of their sentence. They have to fill special criteria's to get sent there.
