This is not Damascene steel. My father has an old book that talks about how steel is made, not how to make a knife or a sword. Damascene steel is made of several materials and some plant residues, natural charcoal, and volcano stone ash enter into it. Damascene steel consists of 22 materials. But this man only makes a knife that looks like Damascene steel, but he's not Damascene.

It's the opposite of art, it's just science. Bring metal to a certain heat so the crystals stay in shape but it's hot enough to stretch the metal. Elongate the crystals by hammering and flattening it. Rinse repeat. Sprinkle borax every x folds on/in between. There's such a large amount of emotional psuedo science going on around swords/knives. I like seeing someone work metal the old fashioned way, but machines easily do it better/faster/cheaper.

This is one of the coolest videos I've seen in a very long time. Watching the slag fall off during the twisting process was just so great. I'm not sure why, but I love seeing steel being purified under heat and a hammer. At first, I wondered how he could ever make a living doing this one knife at a time. Crafting 4 knives at once answered that question.

@TopHIgnite
@TopHIgnite Рік тому
@@BFaluup Damascus isn't overly complicated. Once you know the temperature capabilities of your forge and the temperature required to forge weld the particular types of steel you're working with (yes they are all different), it's just about keeping your surfaces clean and free of oxygen so it doesn't scale up, hence the flux powder. It's all technique from there

@TopHIgnite
@TopHIgnite Рік тому
@Tridon Knight that white powder is flux. In this case it's probably Borax as that is what is most commonly used and readily available in the cleaning supplies section of most supermarkets. The short version is that the boric acid coats the steel and prevents oxidation to keep forge scale from forming between the planes that you are trying to fuse together. Forge scale will prevent a forge weld from bonding.

Нож или мечь из Домаскской стали, при разрезе ,на нём не бывают видны кованные слои , она как будто из цельно отлита. А в те времена еще не знали принципы литья стали, а только знали ковать. Вот в чём разница домаскской стали.

The quality of metal is unreal! The amount of sparks coming off when grinding makes that apparent. He's absolutely amazing. That twisting process and the way he cleans the impurities after every step is amazing. This type of quality rarely exists today, and in another 50 to 100 years, it'll be all but gone. Congratulations on being one of the best in the world at your craft.

I think there is room for improvement for removing the impurities. When he initially added the sheets before the clamping to weld, it should be done then.

For handforged steel sure, but the unfortunate fact remains that factory produced steel is simply superior (if the right considerations are made on the type of steel). Ofcourse you dont get the damascus patterns then and there certainly is something cool about stuff being handmade, it will always be inferior to perfectly made factory steel where the only important thing left is deciding on the right type of steel for the right job. I'm personally quite saddened by that fact.

flux, in metallurgy, any substance introduced in the smelting of ores to promote fluidity and to remove objectionable impurities in the form of slag. Limestone is commonly used for this purpose in smelting iron ores. Other materials used as fluxes are silica, dolomite, lime, borax, and fluorite. --Britannica

I know many Koreans may not appreciate being compared to Japanese, but your style of blacksmithing reminds me of how many Japanese blacksmiths practice with the use of folding for layers instead of cutting and welding. Your technique gives me the feeling of someone that was taught using traditional means and then put a modern twist on it which I like. Great piece and very talented. Keep up the good work, subbed!

@@velicyatan5545 I don't know if Koreans would think the same during the world wars lol. But please don't start down that path, this is a blacksmithing video, don't bring that sort of vibe here.

That being said, the technology came from India in the first place. Japan was a species that was good at processing what it was introduced or taught, so it must have made it even more unique.
