I recently watched your video. It was entertaining enough so that I watched the whole video. As a studio consultant with 35 yrs. in the industry, I might make one or two suggestions. When constructing acoustic panels try not to take the easy way out. Johns Mansville, while having the golden size, only has an R factor of 8. Using real insulation, compressed, gives you a much higher value. I use R-13, but it does require building a frame, but well worth the time. The other, is to make sure you keep a minimum of two inch spacers in back. If your panels touch any surface you will actually amplify that which you are trying to suppress. By the way, the Lewitt LCT 640 is the biggest bang for the buck available. Thank you educating the masses.

I am trying to work on a studio and would you recommend to use the John Manville R-13 or the Owens Corning 703 Rigid Fiberglass Board? Thank you so much!

The mineral wool and fiber glass material is pretty toxic and unsafe. I recommand using Denim Cotton Batt as a safe alternative for sound absorption.

***** Interface can be subjective, depending on how man inputs you need. Personally, starting off I'd get one with 2 inputs. Focusrite 2i2: www.amazon.com/Focusrite-2i2-USB-Recording-Interface/dp/B005OZE9SA Steinberg Ci1: www.amazon.com/Steinberg-CI1-USB-Audio-Interface/dp/B003WI3LNU/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1434400751&sr=1-2&keywords=steinberg+ci2 * steinberg has a few less options, but gets the job done very, very well! Condenser Mics range by price. For a lower-end, the AT2020, works beautifully! But if you're just starting off, I assume you don't have all the equipment, the AT2035, will include all necessary accessories for using a condenser. www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2035-Diaphragm-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00D6RMFG6/ref=sr_1_5?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1434400823&sr=1-5&keywords=at2020

For all that expensive equipment you have and and a great studio overall I would invest in better monitors.. not that the KRK Rokits sound bad..I mean I own a pair and they sound fantastic at least that's what I can afford for now.. but I think there are monitors which have a nicer frequency response, dynamic range and overall more accurate sound.
@JordanReynolds
@JordanReynolds 9 років тому
I agree Darren. I've upgraded sine this video was posted almost 2 years ago :). My primary near fields, which are insanely flat and transparent (unlike the KRK's), are the Sonodyne SRP600's. LOVE these monitors!
@ChrisBrideauMedia

Jordan Reynolds Those are great monitors from what I hear. I have the Yamaha HS50's They are insanely accurate and uncoloured IMO. My mixes got quite a bit better and I wasn't chasing my tail nearly as often. The price is right too.

Hey Don Beda! Thanks for the kind words man! Yes, of course there are several ways to make bass traps. I never claimed that my way was the sole and only way to make them. Another popular method is cutting out triangles of insulation, stacking them in the corner, framing, and covering them in fabric. Plus tons of other options. Have fun at Berklee College, woot!

Thanks K -Ray! No I have never heard that one! I had to look him up real quick to hear his voice again. I guess I could hear it! Thanks again man.

Jordan: By far, one of the best home studio videos that I've ever seen. I'm also a home recording enthusiast and appreciate your clear descriptions and opinions(Very Helpful!!!) I'll be uploading a tour of my home studio soon with a few other tips for beginners and experienced alike. Right now though, I'm having issues with acoustic treatments since I'm in an apartment and don't want to cause too much damage. Thinking about velcroing foam panels all around. Any tips or tricks?

Thanks, I tried my best! I edited out at least 5 minutes of other rambling crap so I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Great overview of your space, with just the right amount of detail. Thanks for sharing! I've considered documenting my own "cave" (as my family calls it), but it's pretty cheap. Mostly moving blankets, and yet it works surprisingly well.
