It looks like he slowed down the game's execution temporarily, look how fast and twitchy his mouse movements are during that sequence

Believe it or not but when that specific manhunt came out that boat-play was one of the things people took as "evidence" that manhunts were faked because of course it looks goddamn ridiculous, and of course huge amounts of people talked discourse about it 😅 It also prompted Dream himself to explain and analyze his thinking and actions in that moment (if you want to see that analysis you can just search up "Minecraft Speedrunner VS 5 Hunters ANALYSIS" and find the full vod with that part in it (he also talks about the manhunt-server's settings that helped him stay in the crafting bench long enough so I don't think it could've been possible in a full-vanilla minecraft server)). But yes it is an extremely high-level play in my opinion, but within the server-settings they have for manhunts other people have actually been able to accomplish the same clutch :D Pretty neat!

He can't build higher than his position because he would have to reach for the top of the block he just placed. Which for that he has to get in the way of the block that could "save" him

The details are so great, you have the "big play" he has to execute, but you also have persistent misdirection and mind games that set the stage for it working, like in that case the hunter is just going to go, "oh yea he's pillaring" and chase him right into the TNT DEATH ZONE.
