This is for the folks who are saying that by time the Qualcomm chip is oput then Apple will be on to the M2 or M1X or whatever. While that is true, it depend very much on the performance of Qualcomm's chip. Nuvia's projections for performance where very high. If the Qualcomm chips just beats the M1 that is one thing, but what if it destroys it. It could be better than whatever Apple releases next as well. We just don't know. I mentioned the M1 as it is the only thing out at the moment to measure against. The Qualcomm chip could equally be an M2 killer. Also don't forget to factor in the purchase of Nuvia when thinking about the possibility of Qualcomm catching and overtaking Apple.

Still any Qualcomm processot will have to deal with the mess that is Windows, maybe Linux could use it better, but really... that is really not the point, the real deal will be that crushes the M1 while running windows, and there is where Apple has the advantage of their OS tailored for the processor.

You’re just guessing at what Qualcomm can deliver. Nuvia may have very high projections about the performance level but they can’t guarantee it will come true. It’s nice to speculate where SoC are heading but the only thing that matters is what’s currently available. And making a bold claim that it may even destroys Apple upcoming M2 is hilarious. The Mac Pro will get Apple Silicon before the end of next year. You know what the Mac Pro is used for aren’t you? Like calculating data from observations in our universe and other scientific tasks that are high demanding and need a ridiculous amount of horsepower and RAM. You still can buy a Mac Pro with Intel Xeon 28-core CPU with up to 2 TB of RAM. Not storage, RAM. I can go on and on but making predictions based on rumors, claims, expectations and projections is nothing more then hot air. Clickbait.

A15 is coming though, just saying. That aside though, AMD GPU does possess additional stuff like VRS and RT which the apple one lacks, so I guess while A15 may pull ahead in Raster, Ray tracing is strict Nono. Then of course, there’s not much push from mobile game devs for raytracing, so I’m not too sure if that edge is meaningful or not - just like high refresh rate is still under-utilised in games, some not even supporting above 60.

I think Gary did a bit on Windows 11, and how it will run on ARM and has the equivalent of Apple's Rosetta that will allow x86 programmes to run on an ARM CPU. There is going to be a lot of x86 stuff out there that's in use but there is no one willing to recompile into native ARM code, Or may be not, as the 64 bit transition might have already shaken it out of the tree.
@justsomeperson5110
@justsomeperson5110 2 роки тому
Won't happen. Even *IF* MS did an awesome job of an x86 on ARM layer (and we know they won't, because they never do these layers well enough to use, when they do them at all) that's still a software-only approach with a high performance loss. Need I point out the Windows support of the DEC Alpha (which couldn't even run INSTALLERS to EVALUATE software compatibility), the Windows support of 16-bit drivers in WinME (and hence why it BSODs so often), prior-version compatibility modes for legacy applications, etc. MS is really REALLY *REALLY* bad at these kinds of things. So without "native" x86 hardware translation on-chip, ARM will NEVER work well on Windows.

I thought last year was exciting with ARM developments but this year the momentum has only built even more! One of my biggest hopes of this consumer ARM revolution is that, as ARM becomes normalized for consumer PC use, the ARM open source development community will expand and soon come up with a [mostly] universal ARM installer that will recognize the particular CPU/SoC you have and install the software/optimizations accordingly. UBPorts has made some headway with that (it supports mostly Snapdragon and Exynos, but some Allwinner and RPi's Broadcom as well). That could open up a whole new level of repurposing older devices instead of contributing to e-waste.

M2 isn’t going to have 64 cores. M2 is next iteration of M1, a new generation. Like Ryzen 3000 series vs 4000 series. The layout will be same as M1 (4p+4e) but it will use a new type of core (μarch) like A78 core is the successor A77. The chip you’re talking about isn’t coming to a phone or laptop, but most likely their desktop Macs like iMac Pro and Mac Pro which presently use 28c Intel Xeon right now. Apple can’t cheat maths. A 64c apple cpu will still consume more power than a 8c apple cpu (M1), but much lesser than a 64c x86 cpu (AMD Threadripper)

@shresthsonkar9207
@shresthsonkar9207 2 роки тому
@Sir Isaac Newton the “annual upgrade” buyers are hugely misunderstood though. Firstly, people don’t buy a new Mac each year like an iPhone - and those who buy iPhones every year are actually leasing it on a data program like Verizon or AT&T. It’s a lease and you return phone after an year, get a new one. That said, of course apple would do so, but also because M2 is not a workstation Chip but a successor to M1. Just like a RTX3060 is a successor to 2060. Within a specific generations, there will be more chips like M1X and M1Z which would be like the 2060, 2070 and 2080 of given generation. You don’t go 8x the cores in one generation because 1. That’s simply not the product category 2. That’s not how companies design chips 3. It will cost exponentially more because cost is linked to chip’s die area, which increases expontially with cores. Let alone apple, Intel or AMD won’t give you a 64core consumer chip either. The very basics of the original comment I replied to are wrong. Chip for Mac Pro workstation != chip for a new MacBook Air.

One thing to rememver is that Apple chips are for Apple products running on an Apple OS. They have OS optimisation to assist performance, whereas the same Snapdragon CPU is currently running both Android 9, 10, 11 and 12 to a degree, all of which are optimized differently. And laptops run both Windows, many forms of Linux, Chrome OS and so on if the user chooses it. And windows has to be compatible with Intel's Core i3, 5, 7, 9 and Xeon, plus AMD's Ryzen 3, 5, 7, 9, EPYC, Threadripper and Athlon CPUs of various architectures too.

@@jackwilson5542 QC can't beat the A series and the M1 blows QC out of the water. It's a non-starter. Apple has managed to do the unthinkable on both power savings and computing power with the M1, with the M1X to soon follow. Intel will be scrambling for years to catch up and QC will be doing the same. I'm honestly not an Apple fan, especially with their recent release about scanning iPhones to spy on users. But they've done with their chip what others have been trying to do for year. I think Intel will go ARM and QC will probably help them and join forces to battle Apple.

@@billb8262 QC beats A series (or matches) for 9 months of a year. The M1 is a laptop chip, so definitely not something comparable to a phone one. (It is apples to oranges comparison) It draws twice the power of A14, so a phone with M1 in it would overheat and run out of battery in 4 hours of use. The tablet (not even phone) they put it in has very mediocre battery life, compared to others in their lineup.

All I can say is BRING IT. Love to see competition in the ARM desktop/laptop scene. Bring the games to ARM! Kill the power hungry and antiquated x86 once and for all. I say this as an M1 Mac owner.

Besides the usual performance gap between A series chips and SD flagship chips, why has Qualcomm not had an equivalent to the A#X line which the M1 is a direct successor to? In those chips, Apple basically just has more high performance cores and more GPU cores to make them much more performant than the regular A series. Is there a reason Qualcomm hasn’t done this until now? Even the 8cx had the same core layout as the 865 from what I understand

Firstly, let me bring to light the fact that Qualcomm was shipping SD855 generation hardware in 2020 (launched oct) Surface Pro X powered by SQ2 SoC. This should give you an idea about their seriousness for laptop chips at Qualcomm. November is when apple launched M1. Now the reasons : 1. More cores = big die. Big die has poorer yields making per chip cost higher. This isn’t a problem when you’re planning to use the chips for your own product - you could buy chips at loss but recover the price on the product as whole by charging big margins - this is what apple typically does. Buying at very high margins from TSMC and recovering it in the final product price. This is also what Samsung does with their displays and Exynos lineup - they don’t need to make profit on each component but only the end product. For a chip vendor like Intel, Qualcomm or AMD, per chip cost is difference between getting an order or losing it. If it’s too costly, they’ll go somewhere else (like mediatek etc) So vendor companies, cannot risk this margin game by making big chips and then finding no place to sell. For Intel and AMD, no problem but for mobile chips, it’s a big one, why? See (2) 2. Demand : there has been no demand from OEMs like Samsung or Lenovo to have more powerful chips than flagship smartphones for use in tablets. X moniker chips only went into iPads, which historically have had more multitasking at hand than the iPhones. The screen is also of higher resolution, thus needs a beefier GPU to render smoothly. This is seen in all iPads vs iPhones, not just X models. The A14 in iPad Air is clocked higher than in iPhones. The A12 in my iPad mini 4 is faster than my mom’s iPhone XR. When there’s no explicit demand for such powerful silicon (iPads have ruled tablet segment since it’s inception) - android tablets never really had the kind of crazy market shares as iPads, nor did the concept of arm laptops exist 5y ago. So there was no demand, thus no need for vendors to risk money in big chips which are costly and have lower demands. 3. In general, let’s just say, the circuits (μarch) is better in iPhones than ARM designs. Whatever you attribute it to - the workforce or the funding - it’s a simple and verifiable fact that apple chips have had more cache, wider decoders, and more ALUs than competing brands. At basic level, it doesn’t matter how many cores a chip has or how much is the clock rate. Hidden information (which companies don’t reveal) like decoder width, RoB width, and ALUs matter. The specs do matter, apple isn’t using pixie dust in its chips. But the specs that might make a difference at basic level are often not told, since people won’t make any sense of it. To put all this, you make dies bigger and use more transistors. M1 has 16B. A14 has 11B, which just u turns back to points (1) and (2) . Even when having only 6cores, vs the 8 cores in SD888, the die of A14 is larger. You see where I’m going? It’s all a vicious cycle of who pours most money and who can afford it.

@@shresthsonkar9207 Ok that makes sense. But why does it seem like they’re gonna start trying now? From what you described it just seems like performant laptop chips will never be a profitable endeavor for them

@@HellNaw98 until ARM laptops were made popular, they didn’t care. It’s been 6mo since M1 and we got the news. That’s evidence enough - apple as trendsetter. Win11 is also having Rosetta 2 like features for emulation of x86. Things are falling into place that’s why they’re entering now. It’s not a surprise that due to evermore performance per watt of apple chips, the consumers are drawn towards arm. To have 20h battery and yet performance much more than existing MacBooks, is changing how people used to view ARM. With more devices like Microsoft surface rumoured to have its own custom ARM chip, the server push for ARM by NVidia and Graviton, Qualcomm sees a rise of new category of ultrabooks which they can supply chips for. Demand is starting to appear. Thus, while they may not have been able to sell as many arm laptops 5y ago as they can today, due to a new trend by apple. It’s almost the smartphone all over again. Why did a touchscreen smartphone with a good UI not exist before 2007 when iPhone came? They were too expensive to make and sell. But apple knew how to market to the right people, and rest follows

Sounds great if the end products have a BIOS to configure stuff like boot order, being able to run Linux / Windows dual boot and virtualisation of e.g. Windows on Linux with full hardware acceleration, and expandability (e.g. upgraded RAM, M.2 PCI-E, battery,…) that would be great and I would totally buy that. If it’s closed like Apple where you can’t even run Linux on it properly, no boot order without hax, no upgradability, then it’s a no, I would stay with Intel or AMD.
@yarnosh
@yarnosh 2 роки тому
The inability to run Linux on certain Macs is not a limitation of boot order or BIOS configuration. It's just a lack of drivers. FWIW, you can install LInux on M1 macs and there are efforts underway to reverse engineer the GPU for full GPU support. BIOS boot configurations are so 1990's. That shit has to go. x86 is on its last legs also.
