Here's a quick how-to guide on creating Garmin Varia Radar maps that show all the vehicle traffic seen on your ride from the Varia Radar. This works with any Garmin Varia Radar, including the RTL500, RTL501, RTL510, RTL511, RTL515, RTL516, and RVR315.
The app (My Bike Radar Traffic) can be installed on a boatload of Garmin Edge, Forerunner, Fenix and plenty of other random Garmin devices. From there, you can see the data on Garmin Connect or Garmin Connect Mobile (Smartphone). However, the real good stuff comes when you use the MyBikeTraffic.com site to actually upload the .FIT file and see the exact maps, speed, and more.

@@matthewfranklin7541 it seems that Garmin have provided the Connect IQ 3.0 required to do this only on the latest x30 devices which is a travesty since they fully control the device firmware and know exactly how they have changed from the previous version. Given that Garmin have created devices that we buy because they last many years, this is smartphone obcelessence creeping into a previously honourable customer relationship. 2 year life for premium products is not acceptable. Please let Garmin know if you agree...

Garmin need to take it to the next level by including a camera' Radar activates camera which records until the car has passed, if theres is an incident or the operator wants to report a dangerous pass they can save it. By using the radar to turn the camera on it will reduce the power consumption to a level that makes it a viable option.

CycliqPlus make a great rear facing camera with light that can join the Edge light network alongside the Varia Radar rear light however they don't talk to each other to mark the video of close or fast passes. That's an amazing missed opportunity to provide what we really want since scanning your ride video is a horrible task. Come on Garmin, do this for your own cameras and in the Ant+ standards so that all can benefit... It's the right thing to do!

I've already found myself making mental notes during rides to go and look at this data to see how fast a particular car was traveling. Also, if Toone is out there he needs to get a contribution link up ASAP - well worth throwing him a few $$ for this.

Just bought a RVR315 after watching and reading a lot of reviews. I am using it on a trike (more of us are not riding upright bikes anymore). And did not find anything about orientation of device being important. I just went for a walk with it, because I am going to use watch. And noticed how quick it picked up in either a vertical or horizontal layout. Maybe others would find this a help to decide upon a purchase if no seat post available. Just added this app to my new Garmin 515 (purchase based on your other video) and Edge 1030. As a cycling advocate, speedy vehicles along cycling routes (here in Canada) is always a hot topic. Many local municipalities are purchasing Strava Metro data to help decide where to build new infrastructure. It would be really cool if Strava Heat Maps/Strava Metro data had actual vehicle passing speeds vs posted speeds included? Ray - my wife and I had our cycling trip across the Netherlands cancelled (postponed) from May/June 2020 til ?? Our ride from the Airport took us right through this Bos area/park. Hope to see Amsterdam again soon! Thanks for the great video and cool techy add on app. Keep them coming!

This is great. I too wish it were baked in and the fit files automatically uploaded when syncing the computer. Last Saturday I was overtaken by 443 cars in 57 km . 😮

Wow! That is a really good app, not just for the car count but also if a car ever hit u from behind, u will have all car data saved and that can help you if u take the driver to court. Amazing!

Just bought an RTL 515. I ride on a street that México City’s goverment sais the traffic is low speed, so a cycling path is not needed. I look forward to use this to show them the real speed of the cars.

Very cool, and definitely something I'd like to see them make official. Something that would be harder for them to do maybe, but also that I'd definitely like to see would be more companies participating in ANT+ light standards and things like that. As someone who DOESN'T have dedicated, separated bike paths, I'm often mixed into traffic (or sometimes the path is in the middle anyways). I have found it EXTREMELY beneficial to have proper turn signals, but there are a ton of products which cover ONE visibility direction, but don't sync with any others (a helmet or backpack on its own, taillight(s) on their own, or handlebar caps on their own.) It'd be really nice to have something a bit cheaper than Garmin's taillight option and also which could be mounted in appropriate areas better (on the ends of handlebars for the front, for example).

Oddly enough, way back in the day, when Garmin was first demo'ing their ANT+ lights, the demo at the ANT+ Symposium included turn signals (which I believe were tied to the routing information). I'm not sure what happened to that. Cool concept.

Fun fact - you already can...almost! The data is just in the .FIT file. In fact, the DCR Analyzer already shows the Varia radar from this app and plots it on a chart with vehicle speeds and distances. While we do actually enumerate .CSV sets for all common data types, we haven't had any requests to do it for FIT File Developer Extensions yet.

Ok. I saw that vehicle count field in the other varia video and looked for it on mine. Couldn’t figure it out! Maybe lots of other people had the same question and that was the origin of this video.

CycliqPlus make a great rear facing camera with light that can join the Edge light network alongside the Varia Radar rear light however they don't talk to each other to mark the video of close or fast passes. That's an amazing missed opportunity to provide what we really want since scanning your ride video is a horrible task. Come on Garmin, do this for your own VIRB cameras and in the Ant+ standards so that all can benefit... It's the right thing to do!

Hi Ray, on a slightly unrelated note: I'm looking for a dual-sided power meter for a new bike (if pedal-based then SPD-SL) what would you recommend for best accuracy whilst not costing the earth? This is really interesting. I wonder if it's possible to use a stationary Varia Radar to survey local traffic speeds (uncalibrated of course)? Kind of like a data logger...

Yup indeed! Because it knows your speed via the Garmin (zero MPH/KPH), it can collect data. In fact, due to various rules here around using electronic devices in-hand while riding, that's how those shots with the Edge 530 were collected - sitting by the side of the road.

Coupling this with a ANGi and a rearward facing GoPro would be nice. If a car comes to close at high speed a video is started and when the ANGi doesn't trigger within 10 seconds the video is deleted ...

I don't get the same options on my map, I just get Radar Speed. No idea if that means My speed or the car's speed. Does this also factor in the rider's speed as well? When I look at the spots on the mybiketraffic site and match with Connect, Radar Speeds appears to be my speed. I do not see the other fields so I have no idea what the cars speed is.

Ray, my Varia 510 ‘loses’ considerate cars when they sit behind me waiting to overtake, presumably because they’re moving at the same speed as me. It’s a bit disconcerting. Is this a thing or have I got it set up wrong with my Wahoo?

Wow, did not know this. This could be very interesting. I could probably build a very interesting world wide database with crowd sourced data. I'm wondering if alternative routes could be explored to avoid traffic. 🤔 And quit bragging about your nice Amsterdam-ian drivers. I have to dodge gun-toting angry drivers daily here in Washington State. 🙄

Indeed, I think the traffic database potential here is so massive. And it doesn't take thousands of riders either. Just a handful of riders per day on roads will start do develop some super interesting insights on vehicular traffic - even more so as riders cover more days/times/etc.. On the bright side in Washington, at least you've got mountains. :)

Only the Edge 520 Plus. The limitation is the Connect IQ version on the Edge 520 doesn’t support radar connectivity for 3rd party apps.

Ray I’m an avid rainmaker follower I’m also an applications engineering. When I hear a request which starts with this will be easy... well for me that’s just easy to say not easy to do. The world of applications is a game of Exponentials a new feature adds exponentially to the complexity & risk & work required to deliver. So the value (the return) of the feature needs to be strong before even consideration given. You need to focus on the return not the feature.

Yes, Strava could collect the data. Unfortunately, Strava is a black hole of data -- they consume it, they market it, and hey produce features from it (routing, info for governments). However, if you're a non-government you can't license this data even at a cost. So no 3rd party innovation enabled or allowed. I get this from a business perspective but i think we're giving Strava way too much of a pass on this 'make the data available' thing. The data isn't available. We could have significant innovation unleashed based on data but that's not going to happen. Instead we're subject to Strava's occasional spurts of actual software development. As far as I'm aware the Garmin situation is similar if not worse.

It is geekery but the only reason I could see this information being useful is if Garmin would use the data to advocate for safer bike access with DOT or local governments. Just to count how many times I'm being passed is useless information to me even if I could use it to understand how much traffic is on a particular route I still have to ride the same routes.
