I thought maybe you were going to climb that tree ! Nice job on the long reach rope melting tool !
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
I am too old for such things ;-) It was already hard to get up the 45 degrees slope to the tree.
@FrankZosso2 роки тому
A handy tool! Thinking of wire antennas stuck in trees 😂 Well done!
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
Thank you! I took a while till I found this simple solution (remote controlled scissors, lighters, etc.) Now we will see if I can use it also in the future.
@FrankZosso2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess Uhhh lighters in the woods. Only for the brave engineers ;-) Better to keep the risk low as you did.
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
Today it was wet and slippery…

Very creative. Would love to see a video on remote control scissors etc.

Awesome! You should post more about your balloon adventures on this channel since ballooning is heavily micro controller based. Would love to learn about all your challenges because finding the lost balloon is actually one of the easier tasks, don’t you think? Building equipment that actually works in near space conditions (reliably and accurately at -80F)really has its challenges not to mention building decent/reliable telemetry; all of which I’d love to hear about. Great UKposts channel; LOVE IT!!!!
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
I do not launch balloons, I only hunte them as shown in video #360. There you find the equipment I use.

This is not a solution I would have thought of, but it worked! We just spend a week in LX with 8 Hams from PA-land, active on the bands between 10 and 160 (just not 12 this year) Not to many QSO's but plenty of HAM-Fun and good food. I'll be back in HB before the year is over (I hope) Thank you for sharing!

You definitely have some great Projects. Glad you were able to recover the “white box”. Hopefully data is intact!
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
Data is transferred during flight. This is why we know where the sondes are. If you are interested: Link in the description… The big box is an ozone sensor,BTW. Only every 10th balloon has one.

It is fun to chase those down, even when difficult to retrieve. I have done several Amateur radio units similar to this one with a couple different radio clubs!

Those balloons are released by the government ;-) But unfortunately, they do not arrive often where I live.
@bOOmslangboy2 роки тому
Nice catch! Would You make a video about the ozone module?

This happened to a friend of mine once. He just used a long PCV and zip-tied a knife similar to the victorinox and tore all parachute cord one by one. It took him 45 minutes. But he did it.
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
I did not want to try it with a knife because the cord is very strong and the distance was quite long. So your friend was very skilled. With heat it takes a friction of a second if you hit the spot
@tasmedic2 роки тому
I'd have used a seatbelt cutter on the end of the mast.
@sphericalmobius2 роки тому
Good recovery
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
:-)
@toastrecon2 роки тому
Genius with the soldering iron! I would have been taping a knife to that thing. Maybe a wifi camera aiming at the blade.
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
I also tested with a USB camera. But it was not needed because I added a guide that the cord had to come to the iron. The hot iron is very efficient. It only needs a short time to melt the wire.
@toastrecon2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess maybe we should crowd source a project to make a drone that will track them on their descent and catch them before they land? :-)
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
That would be very hard. So far I always was late and did not see them falling... In the woods it would be an advantage if they would be cut off the parachute because it usually stays on top of the tallest tree.
@toastrecon2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess I've always thought it would be fun to build a robot that would climb trees - like a monkey or a koala bear. Using arms and claws. It would be interesting to figure out a remote control system for it. It might need some kind of AI to learn how to move and remain stable. Thanks for all of the great videos!

@userou-ig1ze2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess official supply of kids? weather balloons are amazing. Didn't know Swiss people can just order it to have fun with kids

@chuxxsss2 роки тому
What a ride Andreas, you where lucky to get it down from there.
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
Indeed, it was not easy. But you know if you want something...
@MrARM2 роки тому
Nice RS41 find! I never thought about using a soldering iron to cut the parachute cord off, usually a bit of yanking the cord either pulls or breaks it in my case. What's that large box attached to the sonde? I'm in the US and the RS41's we get don't have anything attached to the data port during launches.
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
It is an ozone sonde and it should be returned.
@wojteq_t2 роки тому
Well done, it looks like a rs41 with o3 sensor. Congrats!

@tim467672 роки тому

@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
If I send it back they reuse the Ozon sonde. It is quite complicated an probably expensive. They give us 50CHF…
@John_Smith__2 роки тому
Lol, very nice catch no doubt!
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
I was not able to leave it in the woods just like that ;-)
@keithcookman29182 роки тому
Have you thought of using the Kerberos or Kraken SDR multi array, has it developed enough for this type of tracking. Antenna would be larger and spaced out more! Any thoughts on an episode about?
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
I am not sure if you saw how we track these balloons. There is a link in the description. We use SDRs, BTW.

@McTroyd2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess Hah hah hah! Hopefully you aren't seeing drought conditions out there, or it could get pretty exciting.
@tommasomorandini19822 роки тому
Andreas do you know why they don't reuse the sensor module? On the meteoschweiz page they say they are only interested in the sonde with ozone generator. Do the sensors get damaged during the flight or landing?
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
The standard sondes probably are not very expensive if you buy them by the dozens. And each has a unique number which would have to be reprogrammed. So the handling probably would be too difficult. The ozone sonde is just an addition to a normal sonde, BTW.

How is the DX Commander? - I am thinking of getting one due to limited space and so it’s the only HF solution for me!
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
So far I only used the pole. The rest is still packaged…
@StephaneFontaine812 роки тому
Do you plan to show us the inside of the sondes ? If I got it right MeteoSchweiz does not re-use the small sensor but well the ozon-pump box. However I guess they will not be unhappy if before sending it back you'll have dismantled and re-assembled it "for science" ;-)
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
So far I have no such plans. But maybe I will do what you suggest ( with the next balloon. This one is already on his way to Payerne)

@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
The ozon sonde was the more important part. And yes, it came from Payerne.
@michaegi47172 роки тому
Very cool tool creation. It seems your balloon crossed several controlled airspaces. I hope you don't get into trouble for this.

@mrtnsnp2 роки тому
Very nice. Was this a standard temperature probe or an ozone sensor?
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
This big one is an ozone sonde. They are re-used if you send them back (and you get 50CHF)... The smaller standard sonde is mounted on the side and does the communication as usual.
@mrtnsnp2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess I thought I recognised the model. I work at KNMI.
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
Aha. Then you probably also use them…
@mrtnsnp2 роки тому
@@AndreasSpiess The department that I work at launches the ozone sondes, so a direct colleague is involved, but I'm not myself. The 'ordinary' radiosondes are done by another group altogether. And we experiment with sondes to detect NO₂, but that is not done on a regular schedule.

thats alot of effort for a disposable radio! :P
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
Actually they reuse this bigger Ozon sondes (and you get 50 CHF if you send it back) ;-) But of course, it is mainly for fun...
@babylonfive2 роки тому
Why not a simple remote cutter like electric shears?
@AndreasSpiess2 роки тому
