I feel that it is because those people fear they might get caught looking at something if people walked in, so they don't set their desks against a wall or corner.

yeah, i lived that live for 3 years back in thee olden days - twas quite the scenario - i could perfectly office desk welcome people in my room. Made a nice back plate for my desk making the cables not to obvious. Man even the climate was great, breathy legs, and crotch, generally a great time. I mean yeah the wall behind my chair had to suffer since one always hit and grinded along it, but all in all a wonderful practical setup, 3 screens 2x 24" and one messenger screen of 19". Then one fateful day - a match in check point Gibraltar Overwatch ... at 0200am - playing as a tank on Reinhardt .... i hammered down on the last spot . All of the enemies perfectly in my range.... this will be a game changing ult - i get nanoed and we win. My mighty hammer going down full force , right onto the last checkpoint perfecty hitting a graphical 2d edge with normal mapped ,.... but no this,... was no ordinary 2d edge somehow the dev had given it a collider wall. By heavens - the textures faked me out - my hammer down for naught it smashed the ground and nothing , just noting the shockwave stopping right in front of me, the nano still recieved, slept instantly after and brought to a stop ... no.. NOO!! this cant be - my winning ult just deleted by a mistakenly build level - we were done, there was no escaping it was overtime and the gamechanger just nullified....what a tragedy. in short yeah i smashed my table my second 24" and my 10" screen fgell over the back of my tabkle totaly breaking the screens .. thus i stopped wanting to have an open room not against the wall gameing setup. because it to expensive (side not the 24"brok only slightly on the lower left of the scren os you could still see like 2 thirdes of it i used that screen for another 3 years

Structured work environments are purely theoretical to me. You can certainly clean things up and put them in their "correct" places, but as soon as you need to actually use them in a practical, creative way, they all get scattered again.. So why bother pretending with the structure at all?
