Netflix Presenter, Raphael Rowe speaks to the Student Pocket Guide about the 12 years he spent in maximum security prisons for a murder and robberies he did not commit. Raphael describes what it's like being locked up for 22 hours a day, on his own in a cell with just a bible. He talks about how he mentally coped through the extremely tough 12 years behind bars during his twenties, as an innocent man, until the Court of Appeal quashed his convictions and he was freed in 2000.
In the second half of the interview Raphael tells us about his experiences from his recent Netflix series 'Inside the World's Toughest Prisons'. Spending 1 week inside the toughest prisons in Brazil, Ukraine, Papua New guinea and Belize; Raphael meets some of the worlds most deadliest convicts serving life behind bars. He talks about the shocking prison conditions, prison gangs, riots, brutal murders and what it was like meeting Ukraine's most deadliest serial killer; Serhiy Tkach; a man who's been convicted of killing 37 women and girls from 1980-2005 and suspected of killing over 100.
Raphael also reveals some very exciting news for fans of the Netflix show, and confirms the third season of 'Inside the World's Toughest Prisons' is coming soon, equally as educational as the first two seasons, with some real bizarre instances and a twist!
A special thanks goes out to Raphael for agreeing to this interview. Follow him on social media and check out his website below for more news:

I completely lost sense of reality when I started watching his series on Netflix. This man has such a magnetic demeanor about him; it’s impossible to believe he served jail time.. I’m completely enamored by his personality. He’s humble, not bitter, genuine and a real gem of a person. I wish I could have the fortune of meeting him in real life and just giving him a hug. Anyone else in his position would have collapsed but this man has endured hell and is still moving on. That’s the strength that inspires me. I love Raphael Rowe. He’s a real man.

Love Raphael's Attitude. When he met men who were in a similar situation he was, the mutual simpaty is very evident, he knows what they are facing and they know what he has been through. Especialy here in Brazil, the warming welcome of other inmates is a proof of how much his learnings and experiences are true. I'm a brazilian, you are welcome to come back here anytime, Raphael, thank you for the show and for sharing this interview! I was trying to find something decent to watch on Netflix and found this..I thought "Oh, here we go,... just another prison documentary", but this is a classic..after a few episodes it is absorbing. The Brazil episode was shocking and the Papua New Guinea one was amusing with the guard threatening Raphael and Raphael's face reaction. Then there was Ukraine.. wow! The reaction when entering the room expecting to see an old hag with the mass murderer and a fairly attractive girl sat beside him...jaw drops and eyeballs fall out of head and roll across the floor in disbelief. Classic,...must watch documentary!! Well done Raphael Rowe...a new star of documentaries is born.

I much prefer Rowe and am not surprised to see him having finished his 4th season, season 5 (released today), and that’s a solid amount of series’. Hopefully they’ll keep coming. I find it fascinating to learn about how prisons are run, and how that changes from prison to prison, and also the conditions and how rehabilitation differs.

I think what makes the show so fascinating to watch is that Raphael looks very ethnically ambiguous. He could pass for a middle eastern, a hispanic, a black man etc. That makes it so that no matter what prison he goes to in any country he has a certain relatability with the prisoners and they could also relate to the fact that he's done prison time himself for a crime that he didnt commit. The interactions that he has with people of all cultures and the way that he finds a way to relate to them no matter what is what makes it so great to watch.

Thank you for the feedback. This interview was carried out in a London hotel. We didn't know the room layout until an hour before Raphael arrived. We travelled 100 miles to London with limited equipment and just myself and one camera guy. I really wanted to see London in the background through the window, which meant lighting difficulties, as the light was shining from behind Raphael. My main focus was to be calm and try to relax and have a discussion, in silence, to be able to discuss serious things without distraction. Appreciate your feedback though! Thank you.

First off, I am a Belizean and have not seen the series. I'm always aware that lots of innocent people go to jail for crimes they did not commit. Especially black men who spend long stretches in the US until DNA frees them. However, in my country, the fact that suspects spend long times on remand before being acquitted should be looked at more closely. They're being acquitted not because they are not guilty, but because the eyewitnesses are terrorized into not giving statements and testimonies. The threats are real as countless witnesses have been murdered. Evidence is compromised or goes missing way more than just a few times. The commissioner is on record confirming that he knows pretty much who commits every murder in the city. Proving it in court is another matter. Most times, it's common knowledge in the streets, who the shooters are. Long remand times are sometimes the only punishment these murderers get for multiple homicides. I know a man is innocent until proven innocent in that house of justice. However, Justice is BLIND. The streets are not.

Here in Brazil it is very simple why the gang problem is not resolved: there is political envolvement. There is a LOT of people making money from the gangs and the drug war (including penitenciary agents), and as long as there are people making profit from it, it will never end. We have a very grave case of corruption in our goverment and officers. I am from Sao Paulo Capital and, we have often problems associated with the PCC, Bus Burning, murder, theft and major drug problems. Also, like Raphael said, the conditions in prison are Horrendous. This causes a reaction from inmates in the same proportion. A battle with corruption, and for better education conditions would make our reality better, but i really don't know if the gang problem will ever be resolved by full, because it already has grown in a very worrying proportion. PS: sorry for my english

Huge huge respect for Raphael and his attitude in general, very hard to believe he served 12 years in prison obviously for a crime he didn't commit. However that episode in series 4 about the rapists in lesotho prison should all be mercilessly killed very slowly in worse ways that even the worst minds can possibly think of. These excuses for human beings don't deserve to steal the planet's oxygen by breathing it into their lungs. Maybe just simply leave them all locked up securely and come back 6 months later to see how they've all died. No hope for these disgusting organisms.

"For the better understanding of those who have listened to this judgment and of those who may report it hereafter this is not a finding of innocence, far from it." Rowe, Davis and Johnson, from Sydenham, south London, were jailed for three violent robberies committed in the early hours of December 16, 1988. One led to the death of a hairdresser, Peter Hurburgh, who was dragged at gunpoint from his car, tied up, beaten and doused with petrol. He had a heart attack. Timothy Napier, 40, was stabbed when three men broke into his father's house in Oxted, Surrey. Later, three men also broke into a house in Fetcham, Surrey, and demanded jewellery, cash and car keys. Their weapons included a machete and a gun. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M25_Three

I think what d leyba is trying to say is from a teen, up until the time he was convicted for murder, he never worked, he stole things to make money to get by, which would classify him as a thief. A thief is incomparable to a murderer which Raphael Rowe was not.

I don’t understand how he got out. He had the stolen merchandise. While that doesn’t mean he committed the crimes, it’s some pretty damning evidence. I have been trying to research it because I am a fan of the show, but something about his story doesn’t make sense to me. Was he in a gang for starters? I feel like a lot of people are looking right past it. Anyone have and sourced info about it?

was never a category A prisoner, never was. Category A is for escapees, the highest risk offenders should they escape and cause harm to others. its defined by your behaviour in prison, not by your crime. having 2 guards and a police dog with you at all times while out working out in the prison yard its just not true its a damn lie mate never happened not once. Would love to see this guys criminal record, ive got a feeling prison was tough for him due to previous crimes, against women or children sorry but thats what i feel. ive done prison time, i know why people cop the most distress in prison, and all the shit he said he went thru with bashings and the gyards bashing him etc literally doesnt happen unless you deserve it cause u really think we're gonna waste our time beating on someone who is just a burglar or robber when theres a million child killer women bashing dogs in every prison everyone could easily spend their time on. just doesnt line up with the truth, so yeah hes good at talking smack to people who arent in the know but theres a lot of fishy crap about this wank

He talks about the victims talking about their visual witness statements being different from how him and his co defendants looked - and he even says this evidence is the strongest evidence he has in his favour seriously man thats some shite quality evidence!! Everyone go learn about witness statements, and how unreliable they are, we arent actually designed to remmber eye colour and hair colour or height etc its all survival in those breif moments of distress. its been well proven, eye witness data is shonky. the fact is that the actual fact these witnesses didnt say the people looked like raphael and his mates thats actually better evidence for guilt that it would be had they said it was him!! this is the mind of a selfish narcissist. Never tried to have a relationship with his son, after a few months he disowned him and never once fought for his own damm child lol but spent day and night on a typewriter or pen and paper in prison writing to lawyers and people to try and get rleased from prison. Seriously, what a goose.

You know I did six and a half years for crying my head to bed too and unlike you Raphael I couldn't get the system to work in my favor messed up part is is I remember the last appeal I did they said that all this crap about me being a violent person add me being a sadist and all that and then they go on to say that the only piece of evidence that corroborates my side of the story is the fact that there's no evidence that part really was asinine and there's no worse feeling in the world than to know that you're innocent and be screaming at the top of your lungs you didn't do anything wrong and no one's listening and at the end of the day the court said to me that I'm a violent individual I miss I'm that and the only thing that collaborates my side of the story is that there's no physical evidence go to math on that doing 6 years in prison because somebody says that you did something with no proof no Witnesses and then spending those six years in The Slammer knowing I didn't do anything and I don't think I'll ever get over it

Because the message the prison was sending was that his situation was hopeless and only God could save him. Given how strongly he believed in his innocence, he was not going to give in and accept the guilty verdict, but work to find worldly evidence to prove his innocence. Reading the bible would effectively have been an acknowledgement of giving up. Also, the bible is associated with salvation and sin, but Raphael didn't believe he needed saving nor was there anything to forgive him from, as he wasn't guilty of anything in the first place.
