In '68 I was FDC for a 4 deuce crew in Germany. We had a gunner fresh out of Nam, who could cradle 3 rounds in his left forearm while hanging the first round in the top of the tube. When the Commander called "Four round volley", he could drop all four rounds before the other three guns could get their first rounds off. I'll never forget that guy.

A gun team for a mortar is 4 guys normally. A gunner (who does not shoot but makes sure the gun is aimed correctly) An assistant gunner, who fires the rounds. an ammo bearer who is prepping the mortars (charge and fuse). and one extra person who is doing whatever needs doin. Bringing up more ammo, relaying information, adjusting sight poles, or sleeping in the vehicle. A mortar can easily be operated with as few as 2 guys but they will not be able to shoot as quickly. The main need for 4 people is the man power needed to carry the ammo and equipment for the mortar if the infantry/mortarmen are on foot over longer distances.

I will never forget exiting my 113(command track) and looking at these beasts with their barrels pointed skyward and then all of a sudden WHUMP! The closest one to me fired, and then the next in line and so on until the last in line(#7) and then it was a free for all until all of them fired at will until a crescendo when every single one fired in unison...freaking AWESOME and TERIFYING at the same time!! I only saw that once, during Desert Shield. The Saudi recruits had the old Vietnam-era mortar, and only two of the guys in my platoon -- me and one other -- had really used that very much, so we were detailed to give them a short intro. After some instruction, they lined up and each dropped a round, like 30 of them. And most of them ran like hell as soon as they let go. Apparently the sound was a little muted on this video, because an 81mm mortar is a cannon, and it will ring your bell when you're next to it. Don't forget your earplugs.

One couldn't figure out why his rifle wouldn't fire until the trainers tapped him on the back and said "you've used all your bullets". Several times. He didn't understand. Yes: 13B Cannoneer in the mid-80s. Higher rate of fire a mortar us. I am glad commenters told this was an 82mm: I Googled WWII 60mm. Part of creeping barrage: my bigger brother 8-inchers kill radius 50 meters casualty 100 meters, then us 155mm, 35 meter kill radius 70 meter casualty radius, the the 120mm mortar which kinda replaced the 105mm howitzer after Viet Nam, the you 82mm guys. As attacking USA troops get closer to the target, roll off the higher caliber howitzers and enters the mortars. On thing that bothers me about D-Day in Omaha Beach us that seemed to be any fire support for smoke and such. Could not ships drill a hole with a 16" she'll in to the pill boxes?

I remember that training in ROTC in the early 70's. Surprisingly easy to get and remain on target. We had a target vehicle on the range and my crew as well as several others made multiple direct hits at 2k yards. Impressive weapon system. Our training exposure was so we'd understand the usefulness of mortars and mortar crews when we were to take command of units to hopefully employ them to their best results. I ended up joining the USAF, but never forgot my roots in Army ROTC.

Depends on travel time, typically anywhere from 20-40 seconds or so from drop to impact. So figuring you could drop 15 in 20 sec x2 guns anywhere from 30 to 60 or so rounds. Now remember, a USMC mortar 81's platoon consists of 8 guns so a platoon could drop 120-240ish rounds before first impact.

@@fattony5331 I had my time. And while I certainly would not want to roll back the time and undo it, it's a thing of the past. But I do think everyone should at the very least try to spend some time in the military, it's a good place to be. You learn a lot. You meet a lot of people from a very different background and you get to see the world through different eyes for a change. Yes, you also meet a lot of assholes, but at the very least you eventually learn why people become assholes.

@0x777
@0x777 4 роки тому
Mortar is more primal. It doesn't get any more "primitive" and raw than this in a modern army when it comes to high precise area effect. Sure, there's quite a bit of precision aiming stuff attached, but in the end, it's still just a barrel with a trigger bolt, nothing fancy. It's just you, some sights and a barrel. No complicated locks, no high tech aiming apparatus, no IR, no radar, no computers. Just raw, pure, undiluted physics.

Do the Marines and Army use same tactical battlefield protocol for firing the mortar (assuming same type mortar}? Wondering if the foot soldier/marine operates under a different doctrine that might say, one would train for more rapid fire of the mortar, the other for more precise shots at lower fire rate?
