Welcome to my robotics basics with Python and the Raspberry Pi. In this series, we will be building a simple four-wheeled car. We will learn how to power and control motors, as well as program the GPIO pins to do what we need them to.
The beginnings of this series will be geared for the absolute noob in python and robotics, and will gradually progress.

Are there any other motors I could purchase to use instead of using the kits? Would a micro metal gear motor 50:1 fit inside the chassis and fit into the tires? I am really interested in starting this project but with a stronger motor so it can run a bit better. Also is I use a b+ Raspberry Pi would there be any changes I would have to make? Thank you.

Hi thank for the camera software on one of your other video work very well RPi- Web is it easy to stream to to your phone outside your home network. I have done this with a bird box with motionpie software .

I think this video can be done without any understanding of robotics going into it. You should be fine, but you can also look things up along the way.

Because the RPi B v2 (512mb) only has 1 pwm you can't control the speed of dc motors, right?

Yep, self taught. That's why my standards are so bad :P I first got into programming and python when I wanted to do natural language processing. The main method at the time, and still to this day, is to use Python+NLTK, so that's where it all started.

ebay or amazon is probably your best bet. Just get female-female and some male-female jumpers. Does anyone know if i can use a very big external battery pack that has 2 usb outports to supply power to both the Pi and the Bridge/motor? I will have to get a USB to VCC GND converter but i really don't want to have to worry about 2 separate power supplies.

If its the correct voltage and has enough power (milli-amps) then it should be fine. I run mine off micro-usb phone/tablet chargers, though i prefer a tablet one. What i use is the charger from a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (5 volts, 2 amps) which is perfect, so if you can get something around that range (must be at 5 volts) then yeah.

Brandon Wunderle I put links in the description. I was able to find them on ebay as well at the time. Fairly popular cheap motor. Just search "raspberry pi motor" on ebay. The kit I have came with the battery pack. That said, it is pretty standard. It just houses some AA batteries and has a pos and neg connection. You could probably just search for AA battery pack RC car or something like that to find some.

anthonydangelo Ah, yeah I have one of those on this car as well. AA batteries power the motors, and the recharge-able pack is for the pi. That's an Ankur portable cellphone charger. Bought it on Amazon.

If the raspberry pi has only two USB ports, and they are occupied by the keyboard and mouse, how do you use the dongle?

See my other comment to you. Eventually, if you want desktop, you will use XRDP to remote desktop in. Otherwise, you will use SSH. In either case, this leaves both USB ports open, which is where the edimax dongle goes in one.

I was using my raspberry pi B+ with a 9V battery and about 6-7 hours and the motors started going slower, they doesn't have the same speed as before, I think is because it drained the battery, is that possible the 9V battery got drained so fast?, and what can I do to prevent that with other batteries? Thanks

Yes, that's most likely because you are lower on battery power. You can always try another 9v and see if there's a substantial difference. 6-7 hours on a single 9v isn't really out of the ordinary to be a max.

we run from 6 x AA batteries in a holder pack producing 7.2V and the run time is much longer than we got from a 9V smoke alarm type battery

Fernando Berra 9 volt has low capacity. the AAA, AA, C and D are all 1.5volt but the bigger ones have more capacity.
