For anyone actually wanting whats really going on here, this rail has been cut to release tension then one half is stretched back towards the cut and rewelded, this allows for expansion and compression during hot and cold weather , the whole process helps reduce the risk of snaking (when a section of track pings loose due to tension and forms a snake shape )

Only about 14,000 more rails to re-weld and you guys will be a quarter of the way done. Way to go fellas

For those wondering, that's a thermite reaction welding. It's basically a chemical reaction that yields iron and a whole lot of energy, so it's capable of melting all the iron and make it weld to the train tracks.

I just can’t help but thinking all the Chinese and Irish built miles and miles of track by hands a hundred years ago. A moment of appreciation for them.

I used to do that for cranes, asr systems, stackers, reclaimers, etc. You gotta get those ears off quick, or you're in for about an extra hour slingin a 7 in. grinder.

The best part of working on the rail way on cold nights was when we was welding kept us warm

The stuff used to melt the steel is called thermite . It was used in shells used on war ships in the second world war . It was so hot it would burn through the steel of the ship . But sometime the spatter from it would hit crew . Imagine what that would do to flesh ?

Why solder the rails? Between them, a section of several millimeters is specially left - this is necessary so that when the metal expands from heating in summer and narrows in winter, the rail remains flat

The reaction of Iron(III) Oxide (Fe2O3) with Aluminium is used to join railway tracks or cracked machine parts. This reaction is known as Thermite Reaction. Hope it helped you😊

I used to do this Spot Welding on the tracks in 1984-1985. Amazing

So many of these done , dropping thermit weld , stressing the rail , next weld . Really good way to stick rails together on high speed track .

Сейчас так не делают. Раньше рельсы были 6 метровые и соединялись они по бокам планками, сечас да тоже сваривают но не так тут показано что столько металла срезать надо. Сейчас нагрели приварили и шлифанули, рельсы длиной очень длинные перевозят занимают затрудняюсь сказать примерно шт. 20 платформ. И когда укладывают и сваривают получают 1км. без шовного пути и ставят сфетофор.

I found one of those tools on the road one day it had fallen off of a truck. So I took it to the police department hoping to find its owner. 15 years later watching this video I now know what that tool was for.

Let's remember that not every joint can be welded like that due to thermal expansion, so bolted joints are needed every now and then as a form of expansion joints

Now that's a good paying job to have and with the satisfaction of knowing that trains travel over your perfect welds daily with no derailment.

That was interesting. Thanks. I'd bet that OSHA, DOT and union approved grinder cost at least 25k. Not comparing it with our little shop toys. This does look like a very specialized industrial grade piece though.

Welding engineer on the side of the road. We normally call them the "field" guy. He can cut through almost anything and try to fix it depending on the materials at hand...

Termite welding. Super cool way to repair without dragging a super high amp welder, less precision needed than arc welding as well

My dad was in Korea from '50 - '52. Told us that when the ground was icy & weren't able to dig fox holes, they used termite grenades & within minutes, you had a deep enough hole. Amazing stuff that termite is.

Блин, так безжалостно заваривают мои любимые рельсовые стыки, которые давали этот прекрасный стук колес из детства, когда ехал на поезде куда-то далеко! Нынешние бесстыковые рельсы издают какой-то бездушный шелест, не доставляя никакого удовольствия. Я иногда нахожу в Ютубе запись стука колёс пассажирского поезда и просто слушаю фоном, как музыку.

My Grandfather rest his soul used to be a welder for CSX. He worked for L&N back in the day. 45 years with perfect attendance. He told me he was a couple of minutes late for work once. You could tell that it bothered him. He was the rule.

For those who are interessted.. this Content is from Goldschmidt Thermit Group, they have locations in Germany, Austria and some other places.. I work there myself! But we also do other things than thermite welding, for example grinding and ultrasonic measurements

А потом херак и "выбрасывание пути" из-за свойства удлиняться из-за температуры. Зазоры между рельсами потому и оставляют, чтобы рельсе было куда расширяться.

У нас в России соеденяют исключительно на болтовые соединения т.к зимой может быть -40 а летом +40 при таком перепаде температур металл "играет"

Used to live directly by a train track but behind a tall wall and fence, used to hear noises like these and wonder what the heck they were doing :)

I have seen alot of fires started by railroad workers, some of them being really careful to out in the woods doing this. They think the red hot steel is cooled off and sometimes it will get under a rotten piece of wood and smolder until it gets hot enough to ignite into a flame. By then they are gone so they are not there to put it out

Ersteinmal was ich sehe.Ich sehe eine Schiene S49 mit moderner UIC Schwelle.Für mich sieht die Schweißtechnik mit dem Oberbau nach Deutschland aus. In Deutschland ist es so,dass für das lückenlose verschweißen eine Jahresmitteltemperatur von 23°C amgenommen wird.Dazu gibt es eine tabellarische Auflistung,in der die jetzige gemessene Teperatur mit der angenommenen verglichen wird,daraus ergibt sich die Stoßlücke,die mit dem Schweißmaterial aufgefüllt wird.Ist die gemessene Temperatur niedriger als die Jahresmitteltemperatur muss die Schiene durch erwärmen gelängt werden. Die gesamte Prozedur dient dazu die Gleisverwerfungen im Sommer auf Null zu bringen,im Winter Schienenbrüche zu vermeiden. Dazu wurde der alte K-Oberbau mit Wanderschutz gegen die Federklemmenverschraubung ausgetauscht. Die russischen R60 und R65 Schienen waren für den Bereich der Deutschen Reichsbahn zu weich.

So much easier 50 years ago when men had skill and made a great weld in 5 minutes. Went around to some 80 year old tracks where I live and they were still perfect.

What happens when long lengths of railway rails are welded together ?. When the weather gets hot they get longer and buckle. Thats why rails were designed to have EXPANSION GAPS linked by fishplates and bolts

Странный расход человеческого ресурса, я конечно не спец, но мне кажется проще поставить по краям две пластины и затянуть, ну или заклепать, чем вот так, в данном случае на такой шов достаточно большая нагрузка идет, ну им наверное виднее))
