Here's how I build a real floating hoverboard from back to the future. It works using ground effect to hover on a cushion of air right above the ground.

SPOILER ALERT: I'm surprised that those guys are smart enough to build such a complicated project like this, yet they did not predict that it would obviously sink and be instantly flooded by water. Anyway, congratulations on making it hover at least over land, that's an amazing feat.
@pretoasted
@pretoasted 5 місяців тому
They probably knew it would sink, but also knew it would make for a good video. However, it also took them way too long to figure out they installed motors backwards... which I found pretty surprising. Most engineers would figure that out within an hour... if not less.

It didn't actually sink... The power of the fans dug a hole in the water and as it did it would get lower... It's not completely ruined the fans for a start should be ok.. electronics etc are salvageable.

What about the soviet ekranoplan, that used ground effect to work on water.
@cullenhutchison6528
@cullenhutchison6528 4 місяці тому
@@JohnSmith-ef8nr Gradual decreases in elevation are inevitable for ground effect vehicles (GEVs) traveling over fluids since the air pushes away the fluid directly below the vehicle. This explains the failure in the video, as the hoverboard is a pure GEV. However, with additional lift--i.e., generated by airfoils--even the diminished ground effect over water could be sufficient to keep a GEV hovering, especially if it was constantly moving away from the water it already disturbed. This would require significant speed, but that makes sense for the ekranoplan. TL;DR: Airfoils and speed.

When I was in Jr. High, my science teacher had a working hoverboard that he built, and would occasionally bring out into the hall to let his students try sitting on. It was done with air, but I don’t know exactly how it worked. I think I remember it being quite loud, but this was around 10 years ago, so my memory isn’t great. It always surprised me that nobody had tried this on a larger scale before, when we obviously had the technology and know-how to do it. This video brought back that memory to me, and was super neat to watch. Thank you!
@Baigle1
@Baigle1 5 місяців тому
If you use the downward air from the outer fans to trap a high pressure under the middle of the board, you can use less fans, less batteries and electronics, and seal holes, making it lighter and more effective. For water you will need to interact with a larger ground effect region so your bouyant force doesn't go so low into the water and splash up, meaning you need to make the board wider and keep the fans away from the surface and splash, or keep the size and place the fans higher, interacting with more air and trapping more volumes of high pressure or velocity air. This is why hovercraft use skirts, because you can pneumatically fill the area with far less energy than continuously jetting yourself off of atmospheric mass and ground backpressure.

If you made it like 10-20% more powerful so that it didn’t need to fully rely on the ground affect, you may be able to get it to work over water and move independently without too much extra power / danger. Never seen someone actually do a back 2 the future hoverboard so well, I honestly thought you would have tried to put something to stop the water from coming in and not just go for it but you're right you did nail it just like the move. I'd also really love those shoes lol.

Wow! Such commitment (Or should you just be committed?😀. ) You actually made an exact replacement ("It doesn't work on water.") 😜I am astonished at your ability to solve one problem in such a myriad number of ways. I especially like the "floating in sound" demo, wonder if that would work supersized at a Taylor Swift - or Rolling Stones - concert.

A good rule of thumb. If its going on or near water. Just make it water proof. Dont even bother not considering it. Just do it. Also. Drainage. Water will get in, so give it a way to get out. Think about your directions of momentum and place your holes accordingly.

That plank with fans is actually super similar to something my neighbor made when we were kids. It was made with the exhaust from a vacuum though. Fun project for a couple of kids lol. Only limited by the length of the extension cord.

Im really happy you made this. It was actually Back To The Future that inspired me to be a Film major, and seeing it come to life is making my inner child happy, so thank you on behalf of the 12 year old version of myself. As for a new project, you should make a whip that magically wraps around objects like in the movies, being able to grab or wrap something from a distance. ❤

When I was about 11 I absolutely loved back to the future and magnets, so with my love for back to the future and my knowledge on magnets I wanted to try do the same thing as the toy hoverboard but couldn’t afford the magnets, it’s nice to see it come to life. Would love to see more movie objects outside of marvel and dc

The shape makes it awkward, I also think you could've used less EDF to make it less clunky. I suppose after the fine tuning above, making it fly forward without a tether as help would be amazing. Y'all are the engineers I'll let you figure it out. Respect from Canada 🤙

I know super conductors won't work for this project, but for future reference if you need a bunch maybe consider teaming up with NileRed, he made himself a bunch in the past. Also I'm an electrical engineer myself; you said your scared of those fans getting stuck on at full load, but have you considered using a short circuit safety relay or something along those lines to current limit the supply? I can think of a few things you can do to prevent such a thing from happening. So obviously your using DC so you're not using a VFD (variable frequency drive) to control the speed of the motors, but you have to he using some kind of drive that's using resistance or something that's controling the speed of the motors and usually there you configure a safety limit too. It's alot easier to do it with a VFD on AC motors using hz, just because limiting the frequency that the VFD outputs limits the voltage too because they go hand in hand, for instance if you do 30hz instead of America's standard 60hz that's half the cycles so it would be half the voltage, so being that you get alot more control over AC versus DC a inverter might not be bad idea for another project. Current limits, hertz, list goes on and on what you can do with a VFD, I even have limited AC motors to certain amount of RPM's.
