Extremely happy to see Toyan finally recognize the need to support a multicyclinder crankshaft at every crankwebbing... That is a HUGE improvement. A nice Hot-rod style RC car would be awesome, and would make for an interesting challenge to get the drive turned 90 degrees. it'd be a cool way to show the engine off too, as well as all the shiny bits you could make to make it look really cool. you might want to get a polishing wheel for the exhaust. there's also scope for extra stuff like a proper supercharger and scoop that would make for great CNC projects. It might be tricky to find a body that would work, but it's probably do-able on a 3d printer as it could be made in sections. there's plenty of Ford model-A bodies on thingiverse etc. I don't really like the look of those camshafts, they're a bit thin for an un-supported shaft, It's probably not a huge project to make up some split-bushes from bronze to help them survive.

These engines really aren't suitable for R/C use... They are MODEL engines, not engines to power a model. They would fall apart quickly if used to power a model R/C application.
@davelowets
@davelowets Рік тому
Also, that starter-in-block design is the same as a Cadillac Northstar engine design, and has been CURSED upon by many automotive mechanics everywhere, because they have to tear the top-end off of the engine to replace a starter that should have been a 2-bolt removal, 30 minute job, on most other vehicles. I've done many, and I'd LOVE to have a chance to slap the shit out of the engineer who came up with that stupid design.

Johnny, I have great respect for your machinist, tool making and engineering skills. I enjoy watching your videos. I have been building turbocharged and supercharged engines for around 35 years now. The amount of time does not mean anything though if you're not learning new important things as you go. I see that you're struggling to get this little v8 engine to want to wind up and make horsepower, and It seems like supercharger or no supercharger you're getting the same results. I think I may be able to help you fix these issues one at a time but just know that fixing certain issues will cause this engine to start turning more rpm and making more power which can lead to even more problems, but that is the fun of make horsepower right! LOL. Not only that, but I will start by saying that cam shafts must have needle bearing or plain bearing support between every cylinder. Since there is no pressurized oil which is a whole another problem I think you have no choice but to use a thinner grease which is synthetic Amsoil and create a splash system up top for now and have new cams made that have a needle journal big enough to slide the cam through the holes to assemble it. Plain bearings are awesome, but they require high oil pressure delivered in the correct unloaded area in a wedge design in order to work. Needle bearings can not handle a lot of shock loads, but they can run with very little oil. So I think your valve spring seat psi and over the nose needs to be increased because without a stable rigid valve train that engine will never come alive. And for now I would leave the exhaust valve size the same, but the intake needs to move air, man! Double the flow on the intake should be doable no problem with a larger intake valve, and the port and runners need to be very carefully designed by someone like Brent Long from Long Machine or Dave Bamber from Bamber Racing Engines. Both these guys are second to none, and they are not builders, they are designers, Inventors, Internal combustion engine gurus and the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Either one could help you more than I can because I am their student, but I would love to see you make your little V8 come to life, and I know for a fact there is so much more there to be had. You haven't seen any of its potential yet. You are the man for the job and very capable, but now it comes down to what must be done to fine tune, like you say. Do not give up, please. Hang in there. I used to run them crazy Unlimited alcohol super stock tractors with an inline 6 cylinder 4.875 bore 5.350 stroke 2.600 intake valve to give you an Idea. 3 turbos two stages intercooler homemade pistons, rods crankshaft head valvtrain manifolds. A lot of work. She made 85psi boost plus and used 4.5 gallons of methanol in 8 seconds. Waterman fuel pump flowing 22gpm at 245psi fuel pressure. Over 4000hp at 6000rpm. Too much fun, my friend. I think you can get it running better with a exhaust redesign... those pipes are definitely restricting flow on its bends... And also (something you probably already know): Multi-cylinder engines that size usually have a system to turn on the glow plugs at 30% throttle or lower, just to make the idle more reliable...
@davelowets
@davelowets Рік тому
Huh? I have a number of multi-cylinder glow engines that are this size or larger, and NONE of them have any system that turns the plugs on at low throttle settings, and they ALL idle just fine. If the engine is designed well, it won't need such a thing. There ARE also plugs available with an idle bar across the coil, to help with idle, if it's a problem. The idle bar helps to keep the coil hot, at an idle, by partially shielding the coil from the cooler incoming air/fuel charge. Also, there's norhimg wrong with the bends in the headers they way they are now. In fact, they look better than many full size racing automobile headers I've seen. The primary header tubes on this model engine have quite a long straight section coming off the exhaust port before they start to turn, which is good. If anything, the headers on the model could certainly benefit from a redesigned collector at the end of them, to take advantage of the scavenging effect. As far as the primary routing and bends goes, they're fine just the way they are, and I don't see any real reason, or gain, from redesigning them.

glow plugs are needed for this type of engine as 2 strokes running on methanol ignite on their own compression. You'd need a completely different engine design if you were to go with spark plugs as that requires to run it on gas and a full oil system.

If you think about it, the bottom end is lubricated Like a 2 Stroke but without needle bearings at the rods, the Main bearings of the crankshaft are greased ball bearings and the top end is lubricated by Grease as Well, all of those bearings produce much more friction than in a Car or motorcycle engine. You would have to Put in significant effort to produce a Miniaturen V8 with a full oil lubrication system, thats why they dont do it...

It would be interesting to see a setup where the starter becomes a generator after startup to run other functions of the motor. Like spark plugs, electric fans, and even radio transmitter.
@pbednar
@pbednar Рік тому
there are no spark plugs, they are glowplugs like in diesel, but idea is kinda right. maybe except the fact you still need some form of battery to start the motor and power the steering servo and transmitter when engine dies. The motor can theoretically charge the battery but you need bms for that. And after all, combustion engines are loud but not as powerful as electric, no need for taking some of its power to run the generator. not hating, idea is fine but not really practical in my opinion
