My family is Czech, and we lived in a Czech suburb just outside of Chicago growing up. My parents adopted my sister from Korea when she was a baby; she learned how to cook Czech food from my grandma, and loves it. One day she was walking into her apartment with bags of groceries, when her landlord, who was Czech, offered to help. She saw all the Czech food in the grocery bags and was like, "what the heck? You're Asian! Do you cook this?" - my sister explained things, and they had a great laugh together - and she gave my sister some of her family's recipes.

I am from a Czech descent; my family came to America in the late 1800s. They were from a small village named Bozjov, about an hour south of Prague. I make the goulash. A lot of garlic, paprika and onions. Our biggest Czech meal handed down since my family got here is roast pork, sauerkraut, and potato dumplings. I do the dumplings every Thanksgiving and sometimes Christmas. My grandparents had fish sort of like the traditional carp, however striped bass is very common here, so they replaced it with that. My grandfather used to have fish boats, so it was easy to get. Now, it costs a fortune, so we don't do it as much. My grandmother used to make kolaches. I miss those days, but I have it in my Czech cookbook so it's coming up soon, lol....

Very respectable that you are making traditional czech dishes as vepřo knedlo zelo (pork, kraut and dumpings) as its is called here and is still one of the most favourite dishes here, if you want to learn an another belowed dishes in our culture then look up for Svíčková s houskovými knedlíky (tenderloin/vegetable sauce with dumplings (not the potato ones but ones that are made from old pastry)) or řízek s bramborovým salátem (chicken steak with potato salad) bramborový salát is also typically served on christmas with carp. Also traditional christmas carp in Czechia is raysed in a way so it tastes best around christmas time so I do imagine that in other countries it can be hard to get a good one.

I`m sure grandma`s "Koláče" smelled so delicious through the whole appartment on the baking tray while cooling off, right ? 😄 As a kid when I wanted to pick one from the baking tray my grandma always hushed me away with theese words: "počkej, počkej, bez práce žádne koláče" (wait, wait, no work, no pastry) 😳😆 Ooops.. 😳So I had to help her first with little things in the kitchen to got one or two when they cooled off. She also made buns (buchty) and sweet dumplings with different fruit fillings. 😋Popular filling für pastry, buns and sweet dumplings is also poppy-seed ( makové koláče, makové buchty, makové knedliky) If you add some pickled red cherries to it, it tastes fantastic. 😋😋😍 Try it. 😋

Hi Valery! I was just there in Prague 2 weeks ago and had great food at U Schnellu right off the St Nicholas church square in Mala Strana. Great service and historical place (1787). They had wild boar goulash on the special menu, and also had the beef goulash, both excellent. Recommended stop heading to and from the castle. Also, did the Strahov Monastery brewery and restaurant as you recommended, great place, do not miss! Thanks!

My grandmother was from Prague, but I've never had any of these dishes. I feel so sad to not know this part of my culinary heritage. They migrated to America where they bought a cotton farm in a small town in Texas and pretty much made what the Earth provided for them. Her cuisine was mainly Southern U.S. cooking with a little Czech influence due to the spices and such, very country style fair. Atleast that's what I remember. One thing she always had on the table was cucumbers in vinegar. Not sure if that's Czech but it was a staple at her house. She also made the excellent chicken and dumplings, but her dumplings look nothing like the ones featured here. I'm going to start running through some recipes to introduce my family to this part of my heritage.

well... as a all-life local I have some points to make: Bramborak is usually served plain or as a side dish or with smoked meat and sauerkraut (this option is called Cmunda po kaplicku and it is a Czech traditional). Bramborak served as it is shown on this video is a tourist trap or they just dont know what they are doing (same as "traditional Czech trdelnik, which is both not tradicitonal and not Czech). Getting back to opinions: anything served with "cabbage" in this video was actually served with "Sauerkraut". Strahov Beer Brewery is a tourist trap from my point of view! I am sorry to say that but it is. I have been there several times and there are almost no local people ever and the prices are... sky high. There are so many traditional Prague beer breweries much better than Strahov... most to point out is Brevnov as an example. Just dont go Strahov. Considering the "Traditional Pilsner Restaurant", it is too bad this video focused only to "old parts" of Prague formally, despite there are some places just behind the City Wall to enjoy and might be even cheaper and better, one example being Na Hradcanske restaurant which is actually just a jump away from Prague Castle (from the other side unfortunatelly - maybe) and during lunch times they have awesome meals as cheap as under 150 CZK

I would prefer to escape for 15 min on a Thursday afternoon and see beautiful Prague and it's beautiful people and great food. There are other channels where you can follow Ukrainian refugees and up to the minute news from Ukraine. If you watch all of the RPG videos from the beginning, you will not get the impression that Valerie or any of the other RPG's are Pro-Russian. In fact they have pointed out several times that many of the problems in Prague are a result of being part of the communist block.

As a Czech person, I can confirm that we make bramborák at home very often. It's one of our staples. I'm 38 and I've been loving bramborák my whole life. Nothing better than a steaming hot bramborák right from the pan with a glass of cold milk. I will never get tired of eating bramborák..... Btw, you can make it at home yourself. Peel some raw potatoes, grate them (it will be a great exercise for your muscles), add enough salt, remove excessive liquid that the grated potatoes will give off, add one raw egg, a little bit of flour, some pepper, dried majoram, two or three cloves of pressed garlic.... and that's pretty much it. They you just fry it in a larger pan. The difficult part is really just to grate the potatoes (about 5 large potatoes). The rest is quite easy.... Personally, I sometime also like to add grated zuccini and/or onion.... You can also add a bit of turmeric for nice golden colour. Try it, it's really not that difficult.... Bon appetit!

Prague is worth a visit just for the food as well as the beer! LOVE that Czech goulash and Svíčková! Most restaurants only give you 150 grams, though. I want 200, maybe even 250! Thanks very much for the restaurant suggestions. If I make it back someday, I'll visit them all. Here are some of my favorites: Mincovna on the Old Town square, Lokal - Dlouha street, and near the Lesser Town Bridge Tower, Restaurant and Hotel U Medvídků, Na Perštýně 7, and U Červeného Páva (At The Red Peacock). Take the Železná street off Old Town Square, and turn left on Kamzíkova. The street will narrow, but keep going. It’s on the right.

Then go for it! Czech Republic is safe, unlike most countries in Western Europe, it's still inhabited by mostly European people, it's old architecture wasn't destroyed by bombings during the WWII (like it's the case with most large cities in Germany) so you have several smaller cities in Czech Republic that have absolutely s.t.u.n.n.i.n.g old architecture (Prague, Kutná Hora, Ceský Krumlov, Litomysl, Olomouc...... and a small hidden gem called Roznov pod Radhostem where you will find a fairy-tale like open air museum of folk architecture that is the largest and oldest in Central Europe (visit in late spring, summer or early autumn). Most of Czech cities are fairly small, so you will be able to just walk around and not spend any money for taxis, ubers etc. The public transportation in Czech R. is really good, so you'll be able to reach any of these cities from Prague with no problem and for a very affordable price.... And in every Czech city you will find at least a couple of traditional Czech restaurants where you can enjoy a good Svicková or Vepro, Knedlo, Zelo for about 8 dollar (plus - minus 2 dollars).... Long story short: If you want to see the true Europe, be safe, enjoy very good food and to do all that for a very reasonable price, Czech Republic is just perfect.

All of the original Czech restaurants in Berwyn and Riverside IL, suburbs of Chicago, no longer serve Czech foods. 30 years ago, my grandmother and I ate at all of them, at least six. Southwest of Berwyn, McCook Bohemian still has a Czech recipe filled menu, however, not with the variety of dishes from this video. (Yes for Svickova and Roast Duck, and they have several Czech beers on tap.) Recently, a Czech restaurant in Downers Grove changed their name and menu to serve Lithuanian food. Such is the case with changing demographics.

I would love to try Czech food but I can't have pork or alcohol. Is it possible to find a place where they don't use these in dishes? In Hungarian and I know it's quite difficult there as most dishes are based on bacon or have wine in it. What do you suggest?

One culinary inaccuracy: Svíčková does not come from the name of the sauce. Svíčková is Czech word for tenderlion. For those who don't know, this is a part of beef (or pork but in good Svíčková you have beef) whitch grows on cows back. It's very small (in comparation with other parts of cow) and as it's English name sugest it's the most tender kind of beef you can get. And yes, slice of it is the piece of meet in this dish.
@RealPragueGuides
@RealPragueGuides 2 роки тому
You see this is confusing for us. According to the research we've done, the origins of "svíčková" is not necessarily clear. Some people claim the name comes from the specific meat (like you are saying), some people claim it has something to do with candles, and some special celebration food or whatnot. Apparently the meat used in Svíčková is not actually Svíčková, but some cheaper meat nowadays. We found online that the sauce it's just sometimes called Svíčková omáčka. We are not culinary experts though 😂. We tried...
@Geker3
@Geker3 2 роки тому
@@RealPragueGuides Well since this particular sauce is used only in Svíčková I can not imagine giving it any other name. This with the market value of beef today (even more in past) and giving the fact that tenderlion is the best kind of it. I find more believable the dish (and than the sauce) was named afther the tenderlion but that is just my opinion. In general I would say this coversation is like an argument about what was first a chicken or an egg. :D

Tenderloin, or fillet as we call it in Scotland, is the most tender cut of beef. It costs between £40-50 per kg (1200-1500 CzK) . I don't know how much it costs in Czechia but when you can buy svíčková in some Prague restaurants for around 150CzK I doubt very much that it is fillet, more probably rump or a similar cheaper cut. I've has some wonderful svíčková (Cafe Imperial) and truly awful (U Vejvodu).
@veronikamullerova7033
@veronikamullerova7033 2 роки тому
@@paisleybuddie5096 So in ordinary restaurants they use so-called fake beef tenderloin which is defacto beef shoulder (1kg = about 400kč/£13). In luxury restaurants they will probably use real beef tenderloin (1kg = about 900kč/£30). For people it is like this; if the sauce is cooked as a normal meal or as e.g. a Sunday lunch or for a normal family visit the shoulder is more likely to be used, whereas if it is for some important event such as a birthday or Easter lunch, real tenderloin is more likely to be used.
