Recap training aid for correctly identifying a single phase installation earthing arrangements in this case TN-S. The video includes the size of the meter tails, size of the earthing conductor max Ze 0.8 ohms.
An overview of the intake position of a single phase domestic dwelling looking at the incoming supply authorities cable, cutout fuse size and using the clues to workout the earthing system.

Samui English electrician working in Thailand, TT is normal. The problem of bringing in a 3rd conductor to a single phase building, thus making a TN-S would be the armored cable is not normal here. 3 core CV cable (SWA without the steel armor) would be a poor choice as neutral could be a disconnect' whilst earth remains intact?

Thank you Gaz clear as always that has definitely been some help for me as someone currently learning to be an electrician however there is one question I would like to ask. The fuse housed within the DB are you referring it to the circuit protective devices? Because I don't think I have seen any other fuse other than the cut-out fuse.🤔

Great video as always. Is it ok to calculate R1+R2 by subtracting Ze from Zs?

Hi. If you have measured Zs why would you want R1 + R2? I only every record reading I have take by measurement for. Thanks for the question Gaz

GSH Electrical I agree. My tutor at college said you can reverse Zs =ze+R1+R2 but I have also been told that is not allowed. And also like you I didn't see the point unless your making half the results up.

I only ever record results I measure e.g. I would have to measure Ze and not use the maximum (0.8 or 0.35) in calculating Zs = Ze + (R 1 + R2) also I would measure R1 + R2 and not calculate via length and resistance. Hope this help Gaz

You can not calculate R1+R2 by subtracting from Zs because when you test the Zs you have all exposed and extraneous parts included in the test which create parallel paths! When obtaining the R1+R2 for any given cct, you want the resistance of just the Line conductor + CPC under test!. No parallel included giving inaccurate readings.

Just to add also, it is permitted by BS7671 to calculate the Zs, the only problem with calculating the Zs is that you will not pick up a high resistance across a protective device/ RCD etc. A direct measurement will give you a true reading of what will actually happen in the system under fault conditions.
