Scientist and NSW Australian of the Year Veena Sahajwalla is a recycling superstar with some bold new ideas about how to save waste from landfill. Subscribe: bit.ly/3l7kXcR
Inspired walking the streets of her Mumbai neighbourhood as a child, Veena observed almost everything was reused and "nothing was wasted".
This can-do attitude shaped her engineering career and sowed the seeds for some ground-breaking ideas, including making steel from car tyres. Now she's unveiling her latest invention, a "micro factory" that creates building materials and tiles from dumped clothes and glass.
It’s a revolutionary concept. But will it work outside the lab?

In aust, we had the milk man. Picked up empty glass bottles, returned them full of milk. No plastic bottles! We used to use cloth nappies, which I still used when I had my kids. Hospitals even changed to throw away nappies by at least 1987. I was shocked. We used to take wicker baskets & buy loose veggies. No use of plastic bags or plastic tubs they put fruit in now. It's all about money & big corporations. None of those old ways needed to change nor would it be that hard to go back to!

It is all about changing your small, everyday habits: it took me 3 yrs to zero my food waste, I have boxes w lids by the stove to store food in, thus zeroing my use of plastic film. Our compost is turned into biogas, I don't buy bottled water, I measure my detergent with a tablespoon, careful not to overdose it, hardly use fabric softener but wool dryer balls. It takes some thinking to find out a new way to do things: Now I sew grocery bags using my coffee wrappers for me and everybody who wants; reuse before recycling. Last year I saved 190 kg of food (late date) , thus saving 650 000 liters of water. Imagine how far that will go in my drip irrigated garden! LED-lamps of course. I don't live differently, only better. It well worth the extra thinking to get the foot off the planet's gas pedal. Had we slowed down our habits only 3 % every year 30 yrs ago, we would have seen the same results as the climate improvement during the Corona lockdown.

This whole method is ridiculously over-engineered - instead - just look at the other recycling videos of people using old plastic to make roofing/flooring tiles, even automating their process would only cost a few thousand dollars and reduce waste by a significant, measurable amount. @@AS-ug2vq I don't think it said anywhere that she is averse to doing this in India. But she did say political and legislatural will is necessary. I am an Indian so I know that no matter how scientific one is, you don't easily get political go-ahead here. Unless it improves the ruling party's image. But the ruling party also has its preference for certain businessmen (because they fund the party). It doesn't give contracts easily to others (so that others' clout doesn't grow or upset the plans of their preferred businessmen). Worldwide we already have the technology to live better, wayyy better. But politicians make it difficult for good ideas to go ahead because it is always their agenda first.
