Why, M1?
🔥 Get CuriosityStream AND Nebula for less than $15/y (26% off!) curiositystream.com/reneritchie
In this video I’m going to tell you exactly why Apple’s brand new M1 chipset is just kicking the ever-loving silicon out of Intel right now, kicking them right out of the low power, entry-level Macs and, in some cases, posting results that just clown even higher power, higher-end PCs.
Why? Because of Apple's heavy investment in integrated, scalable architecture. That's what lets them cover all these products efficiently, without the complexity that would come from having to treat each one as a separate client.
And it also means M1 gets to leverage many of the same latest, greatest IP blocks as A14. Only the implementation differs.
For example, the compute engines are close to what a theoretical A14X would look like, 4 high-efficiency CPU cores, 4 high-performance CPU cores, 8 GPU cores, and twice the memory bandwidth and higher memory
But the M1 CPUs can be clocked higher and it has more memory. iOS hasn’t gone beyond 6GB in the iPad Pro or latest iPhone Pros. But the M1 supports up to 16GB.
Then there are the Mac-specific IP. Things like hypervisor acceleration for virtualization, new texture formats in GPU for Mac-specific application types, display engine support for the 6K Pro Display XDR, and the Thunderbolt controllers which lead out to the re-timers. In other words, things the iPhone or iPad don’t need… or currently just don’t have.
It also means that the T2 co-processor is gone now, because that was always really just a version of the Apple A10 chipset handling all the things Intel just wasn’t as good at. Literally a short series of chips Apple had to make, and run BridgeOS on - a variant of watchOS - just to handle everything Intel couldn’t.
And all of that is now integrated into the M1. And the M1 has the latest generation of all those IP, from the Secure Enclave to the accelerator and controller blocks, and on and on. The scalable architecture means it’ll almost certainly stay that way as well, with all the chipsets benefitting from the advances and investments in any of the chipsets.

@@smplfy they aren’t gunning for Microsoft. They’re partners in crime. They’re gunning for Intel, the reason for their two biggest failures of the 2010s: the trash can Mac Pro 2013, and the 12 inch MacBook 2015. This fanless MacBook Air was the warning gunshot. Whatever they do for the pros next year is the kill shot. Intel is 10 years behind and it’s their own doing. If they die, Microsoft and Apple can both move into the future. If they survive, it’s because Apple forced their hand.

@@smplfy Er... macOS is FREE and Windows isn't, how can it "cost more and more"? Not only is free, you get next versions for free as well. Doesn't the price of a Windows license almost cover the difference in RAM or SSD at purchaste time? If you're only a gamer then by all means get a Windows gaming PC. But for a LOT of people who actually work for real on their computer, having macOS is almost a must. Examples: coding and programming (where a Unix-like OS is very helpful), graphic and motion design, music producing, content creators. People who actually earn money by using a computer almost always choose Mac, at least when given the free choice. I do coding and music composition and a Mac is the perfect match. Not cheap, agreed. Just like driving better cars or eating at better restaurants.

After hearing about the initial test results from Apple's M1 CPUs, I decided to buy a RISC-based computer of my own to experiment with. I have no interest in Apple products, so I bought a secondhand Samsung Galaxy Book S for half-price on eBay (about $500). I installed a dev-channel version of Windows 10 that includes x86-64 emulation support, updated a couple of drivers, and started testing various programs I use. I was shocked to discover that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx CPU, lacking Apple's custom optimizations, can nonetheless run several of my Steam games without a dedicated graphics card, while emulating the x86-64 instruction set at the same time. This has me wondering if the entire current paradigm for PC hardware, being resource- and energy-intensive, has been misguided all along.
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 3 роки тому
@@deusexaethera It sure is. Remember even we have gone a far way from the first 8086 to todays 64bit processors a lot of power in traditional x86 hardware is being wasted cause of the backwards compatibility to 8/16bit instruction sets and various software layers to make coding easier on sisc based processors. The M1 breaks with a good amount of that backwards compatibility, but the M1 is not all glory yet. It's looking like a really solid release for the low to mid lvl userbase, but Apple still have a lot of power users in the video and music industry that is using 3'rd party hardware and software solutions wich relies on Mac Pro's with high performance, high core count Xeon cpu's and hundreds of Gb's of ram. These power users will still have to wait at least one or two generations more of the new Mac's before the software gets ported and the new mac hardware will be sufficient to run these high end solutions. This really shows how grave the situation looks for Intel. They are getting their butt thouroghly kicked both in the lower and high end desktop and server department from AMD and the new M1 line has the potential to be the nail in the coffin for their reign in both the consumer and office solution systems if they don't start to change their strathegy. The only bad thing about this is, if it goes like Apple wants we might all be bound completely in the Apple eco system within the next 5-10 years.
@nafnaf0
@nafnaf0 3 роки тому
@@mrdali67 @Shawn Elliott very interesting, I also have no interest in Apple products. Getting ARM successfully ported to Windows through some sort of x86-64 emulation that works well would be ideal, and then have a gradual phase out over a couple generations. This seems like Apple's approach. Yes this does seem like it is very bad for Intel, which is struggling to compete with AMD in the server and entire desktop space, and currently going toe-to-toe with AMD in the laptop space

It's great to see so many enthuseastic reactions about the M1, even from a lot of people who would normally give a "meh" response to anything Apple, but there are still some people criticising it, saying it's not that fast and that "next-gen Ryzen will blow it away" or similar. What they are missing though, is that this isn't competing with the i7-1165G7 and Ryzen 9 4900H to which it is constantly compared , the power draw puts it more in line with the i3-1110G4 and below any Ryzen I can find, presumably AMD have some Athlon series that compare.

Exactly, I've talked crap on apple pricing for years because it has always been equal or inferior, because they pushed the small form factor. But as soon as I understood what this thing was I ordered an M1 MBP. This is big, and I see this device getting a ton of improvements through software in the next few years.

@@RamsesBic Actually, it depends on the company. Shareholders have a lot of control over companies, sometimes too much. The best companies listen to their customers and anticipate their needs. @RamsesBic
@RamsesBic 3 роки тому
@@blackrockcity I agree completely, but we were talking about leading countries by an enlightened despot. That can't be done in the same way as with companies. Because it only works if the leader is exceptional - which is too rare to count on. Shareholders have power only if united or when a handfull shareholders have a majority of the shares. Then they are the "despot". Compare that to princes holding a veto power over a king. Polen tried that - not good.

I believe that the “mobile phone” industry thought iPhone was trying to enter the industry when in reality they were creating a new one. That’s what happened. I believe we are seeing the same here. PC vs ..... doesn’t matter when Apple has decided to take tech in a different direction. Apple won’t be interested in competing with “PC”. They only care about building a new industry. What that is and will look like is what I’m looking forward to watch unfold. So I guess what I’m saying is PC isn’t even in the same business as Apple moving forward, so why even include them in the conversation. Yes there will be a transition period but eventually everyone else will be playing catch up in a new look tech industry!

Excellent video. Knowing the time it takes to develop such processor technology, the next Macs are already known by Apple. It’s just a matter of building manufacturing operation and start shipping new Macs, especially when Apple announced the end of the transition in 2 coming years. It doesn’t give you much time to explore new path but it give enough time to developers to re-compile their application to run natively on Silicon. Only Apple is able to manage smoothly its 3nd CPU transitions (68'000 -> PowerPC -> Intel -> Apple Silicon) with minimum user impact, a quiet remarkable achievement. Apple like few others understand that they need to kill their own products to leave space for the next generations. A lot of companies have disappeared because they didn't want to remove/change their flagship products. I would not feel comfortable working at Intel. Looking left, they see AMD and looking right it’s Apple. The only escape path is to catch up competitors te sooner the better. We are witnessing a new technological approach to consumer computing, what it so called a breakthrough !

I just replaced my 16inch MBP (late 2013) with M1 Air (8GB, 512 ssd). It's amazeballs. I can run all my programs and have infitabs, and it's bulletproof. I have yet to make the chassis hot, so I haven't been throttled. With 8GB memory not 16! Unless you're running multiple rendering programs at the same time, or multiple whatever programs that would crunch the cpu, fanless is fine. Get the Air - decide do you need more than 8GB/256GB - i did 8GB/512GB. The unified memory makes the 8 stretch - I've checked activity monitor, and I'm not close to stressing the memory.
