The need for affordable housing continues to grow in urban centers. The traditional form of affordable housing for suburban and rural areas, mobile homes, have become overrun with speculation, pricing people out through a new type of landlord - private equity.

The issue is that either the renter or the owner must in some way pay insurance and property taxes if they want a "permanent roof" with utilities like electricity, gas and water. Because of this, many people-at least in California, where I currently reside-are living in tents. No taxes, rent, mortgages, or insurance. The number of people who tell me they live in their car that I meet amazes me. Its crazy out here!

In my opinion, a housing market crash is imminent due to the high number of individuals who purchased homes above the asking price despite the low interest rates. These buyers find themselves in precarious situations as housing prices decline, leaving them without any equity. If they become unable to afford their homes, foreclosure becomes a likely outcome. Even attempting to sell would not yield any profits. This scenario is expected to impact a significant number of people, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

I worked 60 yrs. I am 94 yrs. old. I live in a 1 b/r apt. in Plano, Tx. My RENT is 68% of my Soc. Sec. Check. I had to give up Cable, sell my Vehicle, (could not afford the Insurance and Mtn. on it). It is difficult to maintain a signal on my cell phone because the cell phone tower has been relocated. Strongest signal I can get is one bar. I keep the phone on a table next to a window in order to pick it up. Because I live on the first floor and there are blgs. in front of my apt. It is a flip phone not a smart phone. I also have to pay the electric bill also. Texas is the only state in the Union not connected to the National Grid. Social Security should pay all retirees equally. I retired at 64 and get a check for $2,275. Because I bought my house for cash before I retired (in CA with our Prop 13 protection), my monthly bills are less that $1275 including food, utilities, insurance, and everything so I have plenty left every month. But what makes my contribution to society as a worker more valuable than someone who worked hard for 60 years but who only gets a $1500 check? That should be fixed. Whether you're an M.D. or a Garbage Collector, both of those jobs are necessary and should be rewarded in retirement equally imho.

[2] For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, [3] heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, [4] treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, [5] having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. And all of the paperwork would come with a sheet stating that as a renter I was legally obliged to know that since he was getting funding for the construction or upkeep projects that meant he couldn't charge more than a certain amount for rent base on our income. My husband and I spent close to 70% of our income on rent, we made $10 over the budget line for income assistance that would have decreased our rent to an actual affordable amount. Also, why is NO ONE talking about how Airbnb is taking over areas with vacancy and driving up rent to RIDICULOUS prices? For instance, the city I go to university in has few apartments available. But look on Airbnb and hundreds of apartments are available for months, for thousands of dollars. Out of desperation, I finally messaged a few studio apartment owners in modest yet safe areas of the city to see if they would think about renting to a young graduate student for two years, with a moderate credit rating and good recommendations, and if that would vary prices. The answer was a resounding NO. For the five studio apartments I contacted, all requested $1300 (or more) plus utilities. I'm honestly thinking about moving my things into a temp-controlled storage unit and living in my car until I graduate, and showering at school. I hate feeling like a burden to my Dad. My brother and his husband are working 40+ hours each a week and are also struggling to pay rent-- both highly educated and hard working. At some point, US citizens have to realize that this isn't normal, and we have to be more strict on rent pricing and control on increases. This is ridiculous! When individuals and families want to buy homes, they should be given priority. We're should stop allowing corporations, investment firms, foreign buyers, etc from buying up housing properties. I absolutely agree!! There are sharks in my town in MO. When a basic older house goes up for sale it almost never gets sold to one of the many families waiting. It’s almost always to someone that owns 3-4 rental homes already. They buy it throw a sign on it and rent it out for $1,500. Private sales is where it has went wrong. Well at least I think so. Things would be much better if the showing, bidding, and purchase were public. I believe people would be more willing to sell their home to another family standing there rather than some guy with a nice suit. It boils down to community. As a homeowner myself, I would rather sell to a new married couple with dreams to fill rooms or a family with children already. I wouldn’t waste my time with the guy that’s just seeing dollar signs.

Absolutely. There are mega sized property management companies that are paying all cash for properties so they can own them, and buying up many in an area, so they can essentially set the price on them for rent, and they are also out competing people trying to buy a family home they want to live in. Owner/residents are more engaged in communities and their neighborhood. Nothing against renters, because I was one until age 32, but home owners have roots. The longest I lived in a rental was 4 years. Most place I renter were 1 or 2 years max and I moved a lot because of my job. We need a cap on the number of homes that can be owned by absentee buyers in an area.

Back in the 90's, my stepfather wanted to buy me and my wife a mobile home and i said no thank you. Back then, i knew that the value of these homes go down alot and the land is not ours. My stepfather thought we were ingrates and never helped us with anything since. So for years we rent and had landlords from nice to horrible. Regardless, the rents always went up. We finally bought a home when it was much cheaper than now. It was not our ideal home, but we did it to get out from under the thumb of landlords. One of the big things that need to be fixed is the "grey" area that a lot of low income people fall into including myself. That "grey" area being, you work making minimum wage or close to it, but you make too much to qualify for any assistance but you fall into the "grey" area of you make too much for help but make to little to be able to afford rent. The jobs that have better wages are in the city or just outside it, but the rent in those areas are to high to afford so you have to live 50 + miles away to afford anything, but then if you don't own a car you can't get to the city to make more money to afford your cheaper rent 50 miles away and there is no public transportation that far out, and any jobs in the areas where rent is affordable don't pay enough to pay for the rent. If you do own a car the gas is too $$ to be able to drive 100 miles a day. So what do people that fall into this "grey" area supposed to do? This actually pushed me into being homeless for about 4 years, and it wasn't until a crazy homeless guy attacked me from behind and pushed me into on coming traffic, and only then, while I was in the hospital recovering from surgery, did I start to receive any help. And that was only because I was homeless and needed to go someplace other than the hospital to recover for 8 months, and the hospital was not allowed to just put me back on the streets with the extent of my injuries. So it took me almost getting killed to get help...this is not the way it's supposed to be.

A couple of days later they said they were selling. And that was our 60 day notice. It was only in an email not an actual notice with codes or anything. We are currently sleeping on an air mattress in a family members living room because we cannot afford the outrageous rent prices. It would cost almost $10k just to move out and then we’d have to come up with rent again in another month. We are a family of 4 and work. We make too much for assistance but not enough to live in the current rental market. There are about 80 applications per rental so there is a lot of competition.

There is no reason for anyone to be homeless. Especially those who work full-time or have 2 jobs. I live in a small town in Wisconsin. I rent a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment for almost $700/mo. Water, sewage, trash is all included. I've been living here for 4 or 5 years now. I pay for the electricity and wifi. So, where I live is affordable, but $700 is quite a bit much. However, I wouldn't dare lose it because I dont wanna become homeless. I lived with my mom til I was in my mid 30's because at the time I didn't earn enough money to live on my own. I tried and I just found that I couldn't. With Covid, we were all given stimulus money from the gov't, which was nice and helpful, but it later came at a huge cost. Also, because of Covid, so many businesses could not operate and they ended up losing a lot of money. So that caused even more inflation. Also BLM riots caused inflation because of them destroying property such as businesses, in several states. So all this caused food prices to increase heavily, along with gas, and many other essentials that we depend on everyday. Now that wages have increased to $15/hr. That really inflated everything. Its nice to make $15/hr or higher, but it too comes at a cost. The MAJOR reason things are so inflated is because our govt is wasting our money on petty stuff and sending it to other countries who never help us, financially. Yes their citizens are just as poor as us, but their govt hoards all the money like Uncle Scrooge. Everyone is getting screwed by their elected officials. No one seems to do anything about it.

You can be a home owner on the cheap(fair) if you're young and willing to work for it. There's lots of videos on youtube on how to buy cheap parcels and construct your own home for sub 100k. If you're older and have some family members to help out you can save alot otherwise find cheap labor where possible.

I was homeless as a child with my mom I was 10 years old. I’ll never forget it …something like that changes you as a child and your whole life . I’m 32 now and even though I’m financially secure married with kids - I fear homeless everyday. And have flashbacks a lot of what it was like sleeping in a bed of a truck and waking up looking at the sky as my mom drove across town to drop me off at school . I sympathize so much with homeless it hurts me to see people live outside with no home . Although some could be there from drug use mental health no family . It all depends but NO ONE should be homeless

I was homeless at 14 and am about to turn 25 still in the system. Last group home messed me up so bad I lost 10lbs in a matter of weeks and now I'm underweight. I had a section 8 voucher granted to me a year ago but most landlords rejected it because I obviously have no credit score and no rental history. After locating a unit it is still endless levels of beuarocracy to push through. I had to quit working because of how underweight I now am and used all of my savings on extended stay motels. Sometimes at night I catch myself thinking if I should forget the program, the subsidy, the voucher, just disappear. Maybe it's the stubbornness in me but what stops me is the idea that I would be letting them win. Them being the wealthy who are buying up and gentrifyng the land in my home state, California. It would be in their favor to eliminate all people like me and turn the state into one big luxury resort for the world's elite population. Funny thing is, before my health worsened, I was working multiple jobs all in service industry. Supplying their food. And people like me are the only ones who will do it for minimum wage- or less. Do they expect us to live in camps where we are sent out to work and do nothing else? It's already happening with young people, even middle age people still living in group homes or living with FAMILIES of roommates. Not 1 or 2, but multiple couples with children in small apartments. Disgusting conditions.

They kept raising the lot rent until it was$1250 a month. We ended up leaving. I couldn't sell the trailer because of the high lat rent. I ended up just leaving. So really they stole my trailer from me and they resold it.

What do people think the end result was going to be a thousands upon thousands of people not paying their rent for 12 to 18 months? The landlords were still on the hook for that loan to their bank, so it only makes sense that they would jack up their rent big time to make up for their losses

Back in the day, when I purchased my first home to live-in; that was Miami in the early 1990s, first mortgages with rates of 8 to 9% and 9% to 10% were typical. Home prices will come down eventually, but for now; get your money (as much as you can) out of the housing market and get into the financial markets or gold. The new mortgage rates are crazy, add to that the recession and the fact that mortgage guidelines are getting more difficult. Home prices will need to fall by a minimum of 40% (more like 50%) before the market normalizes. If you are in cross roads or need sincere advise on the best moves to take now its best you seek an independent advisor who knows about the financial markets.

The problem is not everyone contributes equally. If everyone has everything fair. Than those of us who go above and beyond won't. And eventually nothing. We will all be in the same boat. Capitalism sucks the least out of any economy to ever exist. You have to spend less time looking for ways to save money. And obsess over making money. Profits compound. Before you realize what's happening your jumping wage gaps. There are ways for 15 year old kids in the projects to establish credit without spending hardly any money. Get a buss ticket at 18 and move on. Stop blaming and do something. But naturally not everyone can succeed. Therefore you must earn the privilege to not be a loser. I do however think owning multiple property's is unacceptable. As well as corps owning property's. Gov zoning land that cannot be used for housing. Foreigners buying our land etc. But capitalism doesn't need to go anywhere

Rooming houses have become very popular in wny. It's sad and awful. Buying a house but renting the land it stands on sounds like a strange concept to me. I live in Germany and own a house on my own land. People either live for a rent or the own the house and ground, but nothing in between. But nowadays there is this tinyhome hype, which promotes exactly this. People pay about 50.000€ for a mobile home with bad insulation (and it can be cold in Germany) and these homes are often smaller than an average car garage. And a lot of people go for this scam and think they could put it on a beautiful place near a lake in the summer for cheap and move it elsewhere if they want. Fools they are. The nice places are either belong to rich mens houses, reservations (where not even camping would be allowed!) or companies. So you will be charged a lot just for the view, charged a lot on heating and living still in a small wooden cabin thats rotting away. Fools they are. Usually we build stone houses here. The traditional northern red brick style has a facade that lasts at least a hundred years without the need of any work on it. The also traditional pan tiles on the roof and timber work under it lasts at least 60 years. Even under the wet, windy and salty conditions here at the coast. Down to the south they have natural brick houses or timberframe which are 500 years old and still inhabited. Building a durable house once, will safe a lot of work in the future. But people go for the cheap crap today.

@@jeffrey266 I'm guessing you didn't actually read what I wrote. I have money to get a home. I Do Not have a 650 fico score. If you know what that is, @ Sadie Beauregard then you would understand, that without the high credit score you can't rent a new home anywhere in a good neighborhood in a safe neighborhood. I lived I this same house for over 10 years ! I always paid when they increased the rent. It was the first time I had ever been late in over 10 years, and never asked them to repair anything. I even paid for the landscaping myself to get done. When I moved in my rent was 1195.00 it went all the way to 1400.00 a month. I was late 1 time due to being hospitalized just a few months back for a bleeding in my stomach called, gastrointestinal tract bleed, or a GI BLEED. And I'm in the hospital right now because it couldn't be fixed correctly the first time, because I left way to soon to go home to pay my rent check! Now, if you want to rent a good home or apartment in a good area you need a credit score of 650 or higher. You also must be able to show that you make 3 times the amount of the rent or 4 times depending on the home, and the actual amount there asking for. I won't loose my kids thankyou very much, however I absolutely don't want to move my little family into a really bad area. I don't think you would like it if your parents moved you into a horrible neighborhood either. Right now I'm way to sick to do much of anything. But even with a bleeding GI, nausea , vomiting extream pain in my stomach and waiting to get this nasty drink to clean my system out, and then have this surgery done so they can get in there and stop the bleeding, and then let this heal properly this time, all while I'm looking for a new home for us to live in.
