Lucia's Workshop

2 роки тому

This vise have been lying in my grandfather's backyard for about 40 years, and now it's time for them to find a new home in a local forge. I wanted this vise to preserve the imprint of time and bring benefit to its new owner.
Join me and let's see together what happens ;)

Brilliant! I have an old vice almost identical to this one that I pulled apart, to restore, around ten years ago. This video has given me the kick in the pants I need to get back to it and finish what I started. Thanks

Nice work! You probably know this, but for other people, leave the nut on a bolt with the nut flush with the end when banging on it. Protects the threads if you plan to use it again.

@@luciasworkshop By the way, I haven't been on the forum lately as we moved into our new house in Горячий Ключ, Краснодарский Край and there is a LOT of work to get moved in. The workshop is far from functional. If anyone asks, tell them we're alive, just busy. :)

nice work. For me, I got lazy in my older years: I probably would have pessure washed it hot, degrease, and let acid or electrolyse do the work. Afterwards milling the vicegrips true, so that is usable again. straighten the handle with a torch and only charge the metric bolts bach to spec if possible. repairs with welding I agree 100%! to finnish: Blueing, and cover with hot old motoroil. the carbon gives a nice finnish. As those vices mostly stay outside, the polish would be not neccesary imo. But this would be MY aproach. After all, a nice recovery for the old Vice! Well done

I always found a hint to its age is the lack of welding. If its rivets and bolts she's old! I have a couple post vice, they are great. Amazing clamp power.

Sometimes rather than using a penetrating oil for stubborn rusty nuts You can heat and melt candle wax it is absorbed the same by capillary action, then some tapping and it comes loose. Good job.
@jamesthompson5224
@jamesthompson5224 Рік тому
You do such a great job at everything in the machine shop, if you have stuck nuts and bolts you can use bees wax like they use for furniture wax heat the bolt and apply some bees wax it will melt and wick into the threads and sometimes work where penetrating oil won't

Ewww, that really hurt at 2:00 when you got the nut off the jaw pivot bolt and then beat on the unprotected end of the bolt. I hope that did not harm the bolt's threads. I made that mistake once. Then my grandpa mentioned that If I had put the nut back on flush with the bolt before I hit it I would not have had that problem. That is my first memory of Grandpa Fritch teaching me things. Your videos are very well done. I would enjoy hearing more about your past and the pathway to becoming a maker in the machine shop. I forgot to mention that a friend in Sweden gave me a very similar blacksmith's vise for my shop. It had belonged to her father who was a friend of mine.

Very nice job on the handle, but I was hoping to see you remake the spring. It looks like it’s missing the lowest 3 cm. Maybe that can be your first smithing project since you have the vise. Very good video!

you should use a drift or a wood block to drive out those big bolts/pins. I watched the threads get bent. It just creates problems for later. Great video!

I have a vise in the same condition as your end result. I too am struggling with whether or not to paint it. Mine will be place in and outside smithy, so leaving it bare with only a boiled linseed oil finish worries me. What did you end up doing with yours? Did you paint it?

It's a linseed oil, one blacksmith gave me that advice. It makes the surface more soft and smooth and also protects the metal from rust.
