Excellent discussion all around and particularly from Jonah. As a Canadian who is often critical of the seemingly wishy washy nature of both American and Canadian foreign policy, it was really great to hear an American speaking with such clarity of thought and moral conviction. Bravo! I wish more people in our leadership could be so clear minded!
@caseytaylor1487

As an American, I too am sometimes frustrated with our lack of long term commitment to certain foreign policy postures. That said, I don’t think that’s representative of the American public as a whole. Of course, there are many people easily persuaded with sensationalist headlines that never read further, much less think critically about it, but there are also many Americans that do consider these issues thoughtfully and have deep convictions on what America should be to and for the world. I, for one, am terrified with the growing instability in the world as certain elements push for our withdrawal from the world stage.

I would prefer that it was announced in advance. In May will send this, in June that. If the war continues past July we'll allow western weapons hitting airfields in Russian, in August all military facilities, in October all military factories and fuel depots, November is for infrastructure and in December all Russian financial assets are forfeit. Next January we'll tax imports from any business or country doing business with Russia to provide support for Ukraine...

Wish they'd stop trotting out the 'sanctions aren't working' line. Sanctions weren't intended to cut Russian oil out of the market - because of the economic impact. The intention was to keep the price down so that it was barely profitable.

@FactCheckerGuy
@FactCheckerGuy 6 днів тому
LMAO. This is how the US-border-Ukraine "compromise" should go: In exchange for aid to Ukraine (which I favor), Biden agrees to enforce immigration laws, rather than rigging the system to basically permit limitless numbers of illegals. Of course, this would require some enforcement mechanism on Biden, so I don't know how that would work. Lankford's proposed agreement with Biden did nothing to actually force Biden to do his job and enforce immigration law.

As a "normal", though Trump Supporting Republican (economy best in decades, everybody had a GOOD job), I found Mr. Goldberg's insights pretty much spot on. A valid question: How CAN we only worry about Ukraine's border without having our own secure? Compared to the trillions squandered on Iraq 2, for which the causus belli was zero; the case for aid for the relief of democracy under attack is unequivocal. The amount provided is quite modest. That said it is a very welcome development. Well done America, Around the globe, the democratic way of life is under attack. For the sake of future generations now let's get this democracy vs autocracy thing done - in favour of democracy. The sources of autocracy are clear as are the strengths and weaknesses of democracy. We need to address the challenges, reinforce the strengths of democracy and fix the weaknesses. Ukraine and Israel's security need to be assured. The democracies also have to realise refugee flows are part of the way the autocracies manipulate them strategically. In the western hemisphere solutions to long running sores in places like Haiti and Venezuela are ripe for aitocratic manipulation and need addressing. Europe and the US also need to better secure their southern borders so the flow of immigrants is well ordered and cannot be manipulated in a way to challenge their sovereignty.

The US have emotional support for Ukraine but they will not put anything of their own at risk. They have been very generous but it should be remembered that these huge sums of money go to American arms manufacturers. The actual hardware that reaches Ukraine is worth a fraction of that. This is a European fight and fortunately the US have given us a bit of time to rearm but nothing more

I disagree- the USA has not been generous. It has actually been rather niggardly in terms of its support- e.g. only last month did we send long range ATACMS, even though we guaranteed their security when they gave up their nukes. Still no F-16s. Moreover, while this fight is in Europe, it has enormous worldwide implications.

It's an Anglo-American fight in alliance with former Eastern bloc countries like Poland and Romania. It began with George W Bush at the start of the 21st century withdrawing from the anti-ballistic missile treaty, pursuing and funding missile defence shield systems, declaring a belligerent policy to expand NATO eastward, before launching the invasion of Iraq on false evidence - the regime change operation in Libya also rode roughshod over International law. In 2008 at the Bucharest NATO summit, despite opposition from Spain, France, Germany and Italy; despite polling in Ukraine showing no appetite among the public for such a move; despite alarm bells sounded by the like of Bill Burns and Fiona Hill, Bush declared that Ukraine would become aligned with NATO ie, the US, militarily. The verdict of several senior Ukrainians involved in the Istanbul 2022 negotiations have said that NATO is the key issue for Russia. Following a ten year investigation, the verdict of a Kiev district court on October 18th, 2023 essentially drew the conclusion that the maidan massacre was a false flag operation by ultranatiinalists. Svoboda and Right-Sector played the leading role in the 2014 violence. Right-Sector took credit for orchestrating the Odessa trade unions building massacre. The ultranatiinalist forces backed by Britain and the US since the 1950s sparked a civil war and Nationalist battalions backed by oligarchs went east to crush dissent committing war crimes documented by Amnesty International.

@@hazelwray4184 Vietnam took the fight out of America and so they have used spending power to deter potential enemies. Which is perfectly sensible and understandable. Britain, France and Germany have to make the stand. Which is as it should be.

@@hazelwray4184 It started when Russia didn't change its history textbooks in the 1990's. They still said the Baltic states joined USSR voluntarily. Which is rubbish, they were conquered and forced, and there's photographic evidence and everything. As soon as it became clear they wouldn't change the textbooks, we realized they wouldn't change their ways and we need to join NATO.

Giving arms -- both US made and otherwise -- costs US taxpayers. It is real money and means real resources don't go to other US interests. (I support aid to Ukraine, but it isn't "free" at all.)
