Hi Kerry Thanks for the excellent video. There are many different nanoVNA models with different features and firmware. The state of affairs with the nanoVNA is in quite a state of flux. For someone that is considering purchasing a nanoVNA the task of determing what models have what features and what features are needed by the user is a daunting task. Your video goes a long ways to inform the viewer of the nanoVNA F V2 capabilities. The theory of operation break down is much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to produce this video.

Thank you! I’m a novice when it comes to VNA test equipment and purchased one for use in public safety 2-way radio system installation and maintenance. Truthfully, the only “advanced” pieces of equipment I own is a portable Agilent Spectrum Analyzer w/TG and a Rigol budget friendly SA with TG. I use them for duplexer and filter tuning. I want to expand my knowledge and this seems like the ideal tool! The Nano VNA I bought is the smaller display unit with plastic housing. It was approx $90 from Amazon. I actually found your video by searching for instructions on the use of the Nano VNA. Fortunately I found the video during the 30 day return window. I will be ordering the one you are showing w/metal housing and larger display. Thanks for the video AND the link!

It looks like PCB traces connect the gunked-up connector P3 to the XP, YP, XN, YN inputs of the XPT2046 Touch Screen Controller U21. Maybe that connector allows the use of different resistive touch screen overlays that have a flat flex cable connection coming off of the bottom instead of off to the side as is the case on the unit you have.

if i was using it a lot i'd make sure that when you screw in the cals they dont rotate the centre pin someone (another reviwer) pointed this out so the centre pin wears out the connector over time, i'd add some v short cable and cal that should be ok as you can easily replace cables not the PCB conns

Perhaps there is a confusion here (22:45). As far as I understand, the output power of NanoVNA-F V2's signal generator is -10dBm (from 140 MHz to 1 GHz), not +0dBm. That is supported by Sysjoint, the readings on my SA, and the readings on your SA as well (try changing your SA's built-in attenuation to a value other than 10dB and see that your reading remains unaffected). When the NanoVNA's "-9dB" setting is engaged, the VNA nominally outputs -19dBm at this frequency.

My odd comment: That 12 MHz crystal Y1 is getting more and more obsolete if it is in that CX5032 7x5 mm case. The 3.2x2.5 mm case with 4 pads is now much more popular and cheaper.

Interesting that they don’t clean off the paint/anodisation on the cover so the electrical contact to the case/shield is dubious. The VNA currently has no Pmax or P1dB spec, It means you can get into problems with testing >20dB amplifiers since the mixer could get overloaded or blown. External pads needed. This is an awesome bit of kit. I tested the frequency accuracy of mine against my Picoscope 3206. Using the VNA 200MHz signal source you can just alias on the scope sampling rate and see (and measure) the difference frequency (beat). Provided the scope doesn’t have anti-alias filters (or they are turned off) this measurement is straightforward. *EDIT:* I contacted their tech support and they claim 25dB is the maximum input, which I assume means 25dB relative to the -9dBm output level. But note that an AD8342 has a P1dB of 8.3 dBm typical. I think it is “brave” trying to measure 8.3dBm + 9dBm = 17.3 dB gain amplifier directly. I would say that if S21 reads above 15 dB you should be attenuating on either port, and you need to attenuate before connecting up a 30dB gain amplifier or you risk frying the mixer.
@Leslie.Green_CEng_MIEE
@Leslie.Green_CEng_MIEE Рік тому
Another unspecified measurement is VSWR. You calibrate the VNA against the cal kit. *The cal kit accuracy is not specified.* Similar looking cal kits on ebay quote *1.025 VSWR* up to 6GHz. I emailed the sysjoint tech support and they say the cal kit load has a VSWR spec of 1.05 up to 3GHz. I measured a 10dB pad and it had a VSWR of 1.05 on the calibrated VNA. But given the cal kit uncertainty that could mean the pad VSWR is between 1.00 and 1.10. Are the ebay cal kits better than the sysjoint cal kits? I think you would have a hard time proving it one way or another.

In case you missed my reply below, the testing scenario is simple -- Do the normal S-O-L-T (short, open, load, thru) calibration on the full 1MHz to 3GHz frequency range -- LEAVE THE THRU CABLE ATTACHED -- and then bring up the following traces -- S21 Log Mag, S11 Log Mag, and VSWR (with scale 0.2). On my unit the VSWR looking into PORT 2 starts out at an almost perfect 50 ohm 1:1, but then linearly increases up to VSWR 2.4 to 1 at 3 GHz. Please check this out and respond. Several web sites are blowing out these SYSJOINT F V-2 VNAs so if they all have faulty PORT 2 VSWR then I think it would be better to get this information out there so people know what they are buying --- or NOT buying quality wise.

Just did a quick test on mine. Under the same condition you were testing the max SWR I got was at around 1.4 which is reasonable. Wondering if your unit is faulty? Did you calibrate with the SMA cables on for all SOLT calibration? Also, what's your firmware version? Mine is Rev C for hardware and 0.3.2 for firmware.

Thanks for the introduction. Isn't it quite meaningless to calibrate the NanoVNA from 50 kHz all the way to 3 GHz with just 101 measure points? You should narrow your bandwidth to what you really want to use your antenna for - otherwise the results are pretty useless. You will probably miss a lot of information that way and just get a rough overwiew.

 @Kerry Wong 1.4 : 1 isn't meeting the 1.1 : 1 spec but it's a lot better than I am seeing - Is that at 3GHz? - because mine looks much better up to 2GHz. If you are seeing 1.4 : 1 VSWR at 3GHz, that may be all the better that this design can do since I have noticed that there are several knock-off versions of these 50kHz to 3GHz NanoVNAs, including the AURSINC NanoVNA SAA-2N V2.2 (which has N connectors). On that unit the upper end return loss at 3GHz is more honestly spec'ed at 13dB min, which is close to what you are seeing, so I suspect that would be what SYSJOINT would also specify if their specifications were accurate and honest. EDIT: I appreciate you doing the test, and the info about the LiteVNA -- I may get one of the LiteVNA units just to extend my measurement range up past 3 GHz to 6GHz, so it's good to know that the PORT2 VSWR isn't super great on that unit either. Fortunately, the 10dB attenuator I have is good for about 1.1 VSWR well up past 6GHz, so I can use it to improve the VSWR looking into PORT 2 for S21 measurements on both the VNA-F V2 and LiteVNA -- and if I need more dynamic range, I will just add an ERA-1 10dB MMIC Amplifier to make up the lost 10dB something like this>> PORT1 OUT -> DUT -> 10dB Atten -> 10dB ERA-1 Amp -> PORT2 IN. Ripple across the band is low on the ERA Amps, so the accuracy of such a lash-up should be excellent if it is calibrated with the ERA Amp in the chain. You could even go with something like an ERA-2 amp, which has about 15dB gain at 3GHz, falling to about 11dB at 6GHz, which would actually slightly IMPROVE the VNA's dynamic range, even after taking into account the increase in noise figure due to the 10dB loss in the attenuator.
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog Рік тому
Yes, the 1.4 number is at 3GHz. It is common for all these NanoVNAs to have worse performance as frequencies increase due to harmonic mixing. I have other nano VNAs which also get roughly the same figure at the same frequency. The higher the frequency the worse the performance. My LiteVNA for instance can go up to 6 GHz but at that frequency the SWR is over 2.2 after calibration.

@bwilder2324
@bwilder2324 Рік тому
@@Manticore1960 Glad you got a good one, because proper VSWR on port 2 is important for S12 through testing on filters, etc. . Sounds like either they fixed it, or more likely, someone loaded the wrong reel of parts when my unit was manufactured and they cranked out a bunch of flaky boards, and rather then rework them, they just dumped their defeto-stock on banggood at a discount, who dumped it on me. I still use my F-V2 from time to time for quick S11 antenna checks where it works just fine, but for precision work involving S12 testing filters, ferrite transmission line transformers etc, I just don't trust it, so I have since purchased a LiteVNA64 6GHz VNA from the official distributor on Ali Express. The LiteVNA64 is a MUCH BETTER UNIT - better VSWR, better Dynamic Range, and TWICE the frequency coverage. The VSWR and noise does creep up a little in the 5-6 GHz range on the LiteVNA64, but I was expecting that. In the 2 to 3 GHz range were the F-V2 maxes out and starts to look pretty bad, my LiteVNA64 isn't even breaking a sweat. The Lite VNA 64 doesn't have the heavy-as-a-brick metal case of the F V2, but the internal shielding is excellent, so overall performance is actual BETTER than the VNA-F V2, which makes the lighter weight construction a welcome change rather than a concern. t

@@KerryWongBlog To be fair, the span when this measurement was made was 0 - 2.5Ghz and the RBW was 3MHz, so it could have been the HP 8566. If they were both dramatically reduced, the unit would stand a better chance of displaying the frequency with more accuracy. In the future, I'm going to buy a second-hand Anritsu Sitemaster for doing duplexers in the field, but just for fun, I'd like to buy something LIKE a NanoVNA and turn it into an easier to use device. I'm thinking of a much larger case, a switchable attenuator, a switchable amplifier, separate buttons on the case for things like frequency, span and amplitude. This would obviously mean some kind of uC to "talk" to the VNA. The problem is, I haven't seen anyone perform any tests where a NanoVNA goes head to head against a serious instrument (like the 8566) to see what the accuracy REALLY is. Everyone seems to use the NanoVNA as their primary standard.

Good Job. From 2 Texas Hams..the idea picked up by a Japanese Ham, who created the original kit and built (in collaboration with others) software implementation..and a nice HW implementation that was made open source in an attempt to avoid bad clones from China. Now we are looking at "Improved" Chinese Products with Proprietary Hardware Implementations in a blood bath free for all- for market dominance- which is what China does best. Throw a team of engineers at it and attempt to "own the clone". Meanwhile 14% of your investment in it goes to the CCP Domestic Security apparatus running a GENOCIDE, operating over 350 Concentration Camps and exterminating every trace of religion and democracy in China, god be damned.

On the official SYSJOINT Webpage, the specified port input VSWR is 1.1 to 1 corresponding to a Port 2 input return loss of about 27.4 dB which is only marginally acceptable but not too bad. Unfortunately, my unit shows AN ACTUAL PORT TWO RETURN LOSS OF LESS THAN 9.5 dB at 3GHz with a corresponding VSWR peaking at OVER 2.4 : 1 -- WHICH IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE -- and I see after some searching around on the web, that others are seeing the same thing. The input VSWR slopes up gradually, only becoming really bad at the higher end of the instrument's range, and is less of an issue below 1GHz, and it can be compensated for by adding a low VSWR 10dB microwave attenuator at the input to PORT 2. Of course, this work-around comes at the expense of 10dB of S21 measurement dynamic range, and the Narda DC-18GHz 10dB attenuator I am using cost more than the Nano VNA-F V2, so you'll have to shop around a bit to find a surplus 6dB-10dB SMA-SMA microwave attenuator with good VSWR at a reasonable price.
