Yup. As a millennial, my grandfather served in the navy during WWII. Was originally going to be a pilot for the navy air force but when the two divisions separated, they assigned him photographer for a carrier due to him being a gopher for a photo company as a teen. Got his own room due to needing a dark room, everyone treated him well because they wanted pics to send back home, and we inherited hundreds of photos he took then and his teenage years in the thirties.

Frontline was iconic for me, the D-Day mission was as close as you could get to a recreation of Saving Private Ryan. But there is one thing that makes it the best and that's the soundtrack. It was composed by Michael Giacchino and anyone who's seen any of his films he's done the music for will know how hard his work slaps. The theme of Arnhem gives me chills to this day.

Other than a handful of missions, that is probably one of the most over the top ones in the series. I think there's 2 or 3 levels where there are other soldiers fighting with you, otherwise it's you against literally thousands of Germans. He was a teacher in the German city of Aachen and would be called to arms pretty late in war. He was sent to the Eastern front and survived the Soviet PoW camps as one of very few. I remember playing Heroes 2 multiplayer for years online, with tens of thousands of people playing. It had a massive competitive scene as well. Absolutely mindblowing if I think back about it. The single player campaign were deliberately cut short because the multiplayer aspect offered much more. After Heroes 2 I dont think any handheld device has had such a solid FPS game that was so popular online. man, MOH:AA brings back so many memories! It was definitely my first experiences in real multiplayer against actual players. I remember getting into a clan named UADD and having some tournaments against other clans. Not to mention, the sound design and music were almost right out of Saving Private Ryan, especially that menu theme! One of my favorite things to do that wasn't mentioned in the video, was taunting your opponents with the in-game chat you could make soldiers say. One of the best things was hearing the Germans taunting in their actual language! Such a cool feature. Oh, and PS: about the leaning in MOHAA, there were binds you could input, but they'd be added to your strafe buttons, so if you went against another player with binds, they'd do this hilarious left/right quick lean animations hahaha. It wasn't perfect, but the game play was very fun and the entire sound design was totally awesome!

My brother was staying in college dorms not far from where my parents lived, and he'd come over and play a bunch of games like moh aa, diablo 2, starcraft, half life, gta3, and lots of games I wouldn't touch like blood 2 the chosen and Clive barkers undying, because they freaked me out. But I loved sitting by him watching him play, and he didn't mind, even tho I bet I was annoying! I was hooked 😅 Spent so many hours in moh aa and cod uo mps! I stopped playing games apart from wow once I moved out, but those were some super fun times.

After rewatching Band of Brothers for like the 30th time recently, I decided to replay Medal of Honor: Airborne. That game is really quite unique in how much it hits yet how much it misses as well. For starters, I played it on the hardest difficulty because I wanted a challenge and a challenge is what I got. Enemies in every corner of the map know where you are the second you touch down. In many parts of the campaign, enemies will also keep spawning forever until you take a certain objective or enter a specific area. But the worst is just how the enemy will hit you. You could be standing out in the open and the enemy AI will miss several shots before hitting you once, but you could also be crouching behind some crates and if ever one sliver of your arm is exposed, or there's a tiny slit/opening between the crates, the enemy will shoot you through it with the precision of Lord of the Rings archers. Granted, this goes both ways and you as the player can also snipe between those crevices, but it becomes a pain when an enemy 300 feet away in a building is sniping you through a crack in the wall the size of a quarter. The gunplay is unrealistic but I kind of like it. You can have a Thompson with a 50 round drum magazine and unload it on the enemy in like 3 seconds with very little recoil. You can hold up to 21 grenades (a mix of gammon grenades, stick grenades and regular grenades) and recreate a small cluster bomb strike with the amount of destruction you can cause with them, although you can't throw them very far. The AI has to be the biggest drawback for me however. It's not the worst ever, but it's bad. For starters, the allied AI: it's there to be a meat shield, nothing more. Medal of Honor has always been a one man army series and Airborne is no different, it simply adds the allied AI to give you the false illusion that you have help. The friendly AI couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and will blatantly miss enemies that are within feet of them. The enemy AI isn't much better. While depending on the difficulty chosen, they may be a cakewalk or absolutely rock your shit, it doesn't change the absurd choices the AI will make. In many cases, the AI *knows* when you are aiming at them and will move, or if they're behind cover, they will stay there until you aim elsewhere. Not all the time, but enough to notice that they do it. They will also take aim almost exclusively at you once you enter an area, even if you have several allies nearby. The oddest choice for me is when the AI stops to do a hand signal animation. They normally do it out in the open and it makes them very easy targets to pick off. Beyond this, they will switch between not being able to hit you to killing you in less than a second and there's no in-between. I still enjoy the game every once in a while, I just wish it was longer. As for Medal of Honor 2010 and Warfighter, I'll say this: they're not bad games by any means. They just came out at the wrong times. Had they both come out 2-3 years earlier respectively, I think they would've done far better. Like how Gmanlives mentioned feeling bored playing MoH 2010? My theory is unless you're in the mood for something/a specific game/nostalgia, you always wanna go for the best experience you can get for the time. Why would I want to play the MoH 2010 or Warfighter stories when I can play the vastly superior Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 campaigns? Granted, I won't argue that MoH 2010 or Warfighter don't have issues and drawbacks because they do, I just think the hate they got in retrospect was unjustified.

Yo fun fact- in the Operation Repunzel level in frontline, it’s actually possible to stay in disguise all the way to the courtyard with the fountain in it- the guy seeing you at the start doesn’t always happen, about 1/4 times he doesn’t realize you’re the wrong guy. The chef in the kitchen also knows so you have to be careful in the kitchen too. The reason you can’t get past the courtyard is because a bunch of enemy soldiers are jogging around and you can’t get past them without engaging in some way. Makes the level much more doable.

Also having grandfathers who were both in the war, (they were both US Navy sailors) its history has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember, so this series really meant a lot to me growing up as well. I did not play every single one they made, but I fondly remember the first two, Frontline, Rising Sun, and Airborne, with the latter being my favorite and peaking my interest in the 82nd Airborne Division's WWII history. My favorite WWII game series is still a close battle between Brothers in Arms and Sniper Elite, but nothing will ever take away the nostalgia or what Medal of Honor meant to me in those earlier years. I am really shocked the first few games have not gotten a remake with the success of all the RE remakes and Mafia 1's remake in recent years. Also, Michael Giacchino's work for the series is absolutely amazing. It's gotta be the most iconic soundtrack for any shooter game, or at least any WWII game series. Medal of Honor (2010) was meh... I really enjoyed that one mission where you start inside the troop transport helicopter and then end in that dilapidated building that is getting torn to shreds. Every other mission just felt repetitive or boring to me.

Greetings from Singapore, I have a special pining for MOH: Rising Sun. Considering it was occupied historically by Axis Japan then. The Tuk Tuk is called “Rickshaw”. Tuk-Tuk are the motorized ones mostly seen in Thailand, they have 3 wheels. Factoid: Rickshaw is the anglicized word for “Jinriksha / 人力車”, Japanese for human powered wagon. The hotel which the Axis summit was held is real. It’s the Raffles Hotel. The pier which the player arrives is Clifford Pier. After which he was on a rickshaw to Chinatown. Yes, Chinatown is a very touristy location in Singapore now. The famous Sultan Mosque at Arab street was featured as part of the game’s backdrop.

The thing I absolutely loved about Underground is how it treats Manon. At its heart, Underground is the story of a ordinary woman living and fighting through the most bloody and horrible conflict in human history, and the missions keep feeding back into that sense of her femininity and almost... vulnerability -- of course said with the big asterisk that she is never once presented as anything other than a competent spy and a brave freedom fighter. You're the younger sister of a Resistance cell leader. Multiple times you have to pose as a female journalist behind enemy lines, taking snaps of the Germans so they're charmed and let their guard down. She's clearly meant to be attractive but never overtly sexualised in a tasteless way so many other games of the 90's/00's period were doing. In fact outside of the bonus films she never speaks a word, yet she has so much presence. Honestly, Manon hits all the right notes you want to see from a female protagonist and even many games released now, twenty years after the release of Underground, can't seem to get that formula right.

The slightly more realistic and less Hollywood feel to the MOH reboot in comparison to COD games was actually kinda refreshing. It just needed more time to compete because what's happening with games like Battlefield is just sad. COD is clearly a bloody tough act to follow.

I really liked the 2010 one. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were present in everyone's mind back then, but only generally. The actual details of what was going tended to get lost. Call Of Duty Modern Warfare featured fictional battles in mostly fictional locations. Referencing the real life wars going on was kind of frowned upon - see all the problems the finally-soon-to-be-released Six Days In Fallujah had back then. The 2010 Medal Of Honor said "heck with that" and told the story of a real battle that happened a few months into the war in Afghanistan. Some names and other details were changed, but it's a reasonably faithful telling of the Battle of Takur Ghar. I'd also add that the sequence where you're about to be overrun only to have air support come in at the last second and save you happens about halfway through the game, and kind of foreshadows what comes towards the end - again you're being overrun, but this time, while there is rescue on the way, it doesn't get there in time. Two Medals of Honor were awarded for actions in that battle. Interestingly, they're the only Medal of Honor actions to ever be recorded on video (albeit grainy FLIR footage from a drone), and the end of the game is based on that event. ukposts.info/have/v-deo/a598gaCLqJqFuqM.html I had hopes that this was where the franchise was going to move towards. Telling stories behind actual Medal of Honor awards, especially from the war that still happening, at a time when no one else had the guts to address that subject. That could have been something real special. Unfortunately they decided to go all in on trying to copycat Call of Duty with Warfighter, and it all went to shit.

Before there was Captain Price...there was Jimmy Patterson. Let the nostalgia flow.

I remember playing Frontline or European Assault with my friends from college for hours on our Gamecubes. Also, there is a mission in Frontline in which you are sent to Holland I think and man, between the music, the landscapes and the frightened grandmas holding brooms I just felt true sadness and pity for the people that lived that irl.

Eh. I find cinema orchestral music in games is boring. Most times I don't even notice it. Ive gone through these games so much when younger and never even gave it a thought.
