If your a 1d dude (like a stick figure) your either walking around the circle or from one end of the line to the other your not gonna know if your universe is "curved" (a circle in this case) or not until you get back to where you started. If your world is liner like the line then its impossible to prove that its linear because you can keep walking along the line forever and you could always be one step away from getting back to where you were (because it could just be a really big circle) or you could just be on an infinitely long line. Its hard to visualize because we precieve 3 dimensions, but the idea is that the universe could be curved and if you go in a straight direction for a long time you could end up where you started and theres no way of proving or disproving it unless we go in a straight line and end up where we were.
