Jordan B Peterson

Jordan B Peterson

День тому

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down in-person with recently “canceled” comedian Matt Rife. They discuss the incident in question, his viral response, the prominence of crowd work in his act, his early career start at the age of 15, the innovative use of social media to build his name, and the real reason he remains unapologetic for having a sense of humor.
Matthew Steven Rife was born in 1995 and is an American stand up comedian and actor. He started early, entering a school talent show at the age of 14 after being encouraged by a friend. Finding this to be a success, he went professional the next year at age 15. Using TikTok, he managed to consistently go viral with his stand up and "red flag" crowd work. He then entered the arena full time, using social media to grow his name before producing three straight-to-UKposts comedy specials from 2021 to 2023. This year, he debuted his first Netflix special, "Natural Selection."
This episode was filmed on November 22, 2023

i’ve been disabled with chronic illnesses since childhood, and i’ve been in a wheelchair for the past 10 years since i became an amputee, and nothing makes me happier than LAUGHING!!! people walk on eggshells around me all the time, and i watched one of matt’s shows where he joked with a girl in a wheelchair, and he wasn’t demeaning in any way whatsoever which was incredibly endearing. btw, the girl laughed her ass off and thanked him for INCLUDING US!!! i don’t go to a comedy show to get upset and defensive. i’m SO glad that you didn’t apologize for what he said, and i’m even happier than matt isn’t allowing himself to get canceled. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Agree! I was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy called Mitochondrial Myopathy in 1992 at age 12. I started attending MDA camp that year, we called it the crippled kids camp! I have the utmost respect for Dr. Peterson and Matt is hilarious (even though I love metal music.😂) I've been prescribed countless medications by doctors that were listed as "toxic" to Mitochondrial diseases and battles a 25 year long opioid addiction. I truly believe "laughter" (and specific vitamin supplements) r the best medicine. In this world if u don't laugh you'll never stop crying. Stay strong Dr. Peterson and Matt Rife💜💜💜

Well, comics are generally pretty smart and think about all kinds of things, and because humor can often be offensive, because you're making fun of something, often normal human behaviour or odd things or society in general, and live in that, you tend to think more or differently about some things. They both think a lot about people, emotions, humanity, life, etc. And people not understanding what he says is a joke are just, well, morons. He touches a bit on it when he's talking about timing too, there are places and times you can say horrible things and they're just funny, but often you have to be quick with it, if you take 30 seconds to think of something and then say it instead of within a second, it'll come over waaaaay different. But still, he's doing a show, it's a joke. As soon as you think something is too bad or ridiculous to be true, it probably is, apparently some people are missing that insight.

I watched and enjoyed Matt Rife's special the day it was released, and had no idea he "was cancelled" 🤣 Or that that domestic violence joke was horrible and misogynistic. Watch his body language, tone and mimics - they show non-malicious context. And I am a liberal (by a dictionary meaning, not modern US context), woman, feminist (equal rights, equal responsibilities) kind of person. I like Matt's comedy overall, and have listened to Jordan's interviews over the years and found many wisdom tidbits in them for myself. You don't have to agree with everything a person says or like everything they do to respect them for the value their work does generate. Even if not for you. Humour is a fantastic outlet for coping. My Jewish grandparents told the most obscene Holocaust jokes. They said it helped them cope with the inexpressible trauma of horrors that they had no words to process. One rabbi said that Holocaust jokes were told by Jews because one can't simultaneously laugh and be afraid. And laughing is way nicer and be trembling with fear. Exercise common sense and be a bit kinder than necessary, kids. Not everything in the world is about and for you. And it's ok.

To start, I’m a Sikh, Indian, and my culture is important to me. Thought the past two years I’ve fallen in love with the comedy Matt Rife tells, it’s quick, witty and genuine, he’s not scripted, he’s a true talent. I hope you get to read this. I saw a comedy skit online that he did where he bounced jokes off a Sikh man making terrorists jokes. It was tough to hear at first cause my people have been attacked being called that before. For a moment I was mad with Rife, but then I remembered it’s a joke, he’s a comedian. While the joke is insensitive it was still just a harmless joke and seeing the fellow Indian man who was in the video happy made me happy. I then mentally set myself as if I wasn’t a Sikh and didn’t know the tension of what terrorism is to the Sikh community then I found the joke decent, not his best work but not hurtful to my being. People need to learn to separate their true selves when experiencing comedy. Sorry for a long comment wanted to share how I almost got offended but took the philosophy of not taking comedy at true value to myself as who I am
@meghanparris8203
@meghanparris8203 5 місяців тому
You have to know yourself and, I think, be ok with who you are to be able to separate who you are from something someone said, without taking it personally. And lemme say this now before I get ahead of myself, I wholeheartedly agree with you, I think it's one of the main reasons why people these days do get so upset over every little thing, is because they have no real values and they don't really stand for one thing or another- literal fence-sitters. So they don't have the ability to separate themselves, they get personally hurt- like, it's being said only to them. You are obviously intelligent enough to see and do this yourself, but sadly most people aren't.

I think you touched on something important which is taking a step back from indignation about your identity. Whether your identity is black, white, female, trans, Sikh, etc, especially as it relates to the field of comedy, obsession about your identity is something that will only hinder the experience of going for the "ride" that is listening to someone else's joke.
@mattChisholm-vt3dl
@mattChisholm-vt3dl 5 місяців тому
This is a great response. Comedy is a show. An act. And to be offended is just a selfish and egotistical. Unless he targets you specificly sure you can feel how you want but be a realistic man or woman and be bigger than that. Who care how you feel because if it's making people laugh you're spreading a good feeling to a crowd to be honest I don't like being targeted about anything that would bring up a negative emotion but it's a show it's meant to be controversial or something that you wouldn't take politely from someone on the street because it's not real it's just like TV it goes to extreme sometimes because we all have intrusive thoughts that we wouldn't act on but when someone can actually turn any scenario especially something negative into laughter then he's doing the job that you paid to go see it has to be expected especially in comedy it's great that you understand this laughter is the second most treasured emotion that you can share with others . And to push past any personal issue that might feel offensive to you is worth it as long as it's making people laugh only the truth matters assumptions are made by the comedian in his joke it's never personal it's for everyone. Right on man it's good to see that someone can actually take a joke

It's refreshing to finally see Matt as himself, not the persona he has on stage which, if I'm being honest, is a little raunchy for my taste. But he seems like a very good young man with a bright future. The work that he's put in and lack of apology for being him are very inspirational even if his routine is not my cup of tea.

And I don't understand how anyone could claim that a "domestic abuse" joke is an attempt to gain MALE FAN(they're more sensitive over domestic, than chicks)?! --I think the fained "outrage" is from the same bitter,self-loathing chicks that don't get comedy; looking for a new target, a "trendy" cause. Any "fans" that easily triggered aren't fans of comedy, they're the ones that enjoy looking at him.

I'm an addict in recovery for 12 years now and when I'm in a meeting and a person or I share about the insanity or devastation of our using and people laugh it is the greatest feeling in the world. We connect on an amazing level and the pain no longer is destroying us. Just like what Matt does, who I love watching, gets stuff out there that most are so afraid of talking about themselves. Funny story about me....Insanity is I worked at a company for over 30 years in my addiction at a "health authority" not once did this "health authority see that I was a complete mess and killing myself (that is hilarious) and the fact that for 30 years I worked in 28 different departments ......so funny!!! I have and so many people that laugh at my insane life have healed more than living in the darkness. Thanks Matt for being you and you make me laugh so hard.

Comedy is the biggest and first defense for Freedom of Speech in the modern day. We need people like Matt Rife in the world right now. He has more connection with people and community than the individuals who claim to care about victims, yet only work to speak on their behalf. Victims get no help when they can't be heard.

@@ejcejc4113 It's not a new fight. It's just the continued fight for the Western world over the past year. People should be able to express themselves. We can't see a problem until it's announced. We document history to remember that we made mistakes and we'll continue to make mistakes, but we need to experience them to remind us what parts not to give power. Civility is a philosophical belief. It needs to be practiced. Anyone who justifies violent reactions to anyone who doesn't agree with them isn't a Civil act. Violence is the action of cowards. Words are the tool of the wise.

My cousin has severe cerebral palsy. When we were 10, we used to watch a show called Little Britain. There was a sketch in it where a guy would pretend he couldn’t walk and got pushed around in a wheel chair by his carer. When he looked away to do something, the guy in a wheel chair would get up walk off and do something really funny like dive off a tall diving board. My cousin thought it was the funniest thing and not once thought it was offensive. That was 20 years ago, and sad to think none of these shows get commissioned due to them potentially offending 1 or 2 people. Times need to change back to what we had! 100 percent!!
