I was born in Baghdad and I have always known that Baghdad was built by the Abbasid king Al-Mansur. Looking at this map, Baghdad's location is exactly were Akkad used to be. No freakin one during my whole school years told us that Baghdad was built there 1400 years ago probably had to do with the location of Akkad the capital of the Akkadian empire. Check out the Ancient World podcast. Obviously, it has none of the amazing art that Kings and Generals have (and it can help a lot with all these ancient mesopotamian names) but it is very in-depth, starts with the earliest history of the first cities in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, China, Minoan Crete, southern America (there was a civilisation as old as these others although then disappeared) and the British Isles and continues mostly with Egypt, Mesopotamia, China and to a lesser degree India (fewer written sources) and Crete/Greece all the way to the 3rd century BC (I think, I'm still at the 9th or so episode, but that was the original plan, I think it's now went beyond that). The narration is very good too.

The ancient Hebrews originally came from Mesopotamia. They than migrated to Syria than Cnaan and finally Egypt. So it would make sense their stories and culture would be based on the Mesopotamian one + local cultures they had contact with during their travel before settling in Cnaan (Modern Israel).

Actually - those particular mythological accounts of Sargon are based on accounts from Nineveh 1500 years after Sargon was alive. They were released as part of historical archeology in 1870 from ancient Nineveh. Historically the accounts of Moses are actually older than these Nineveh accounts of Sargon. The prestige of the name Sargon was known in this time in the same way we would know the title Caesar brings prestige.

Teddy Bear Nope completely different cases, when Moses was sent there was no river of blood, that was when he was an adult and sent by God to liberate the Hebrew people and God punished the egyptians with the 10 plagues, one being the river of the Nile turning into blood, this awestruck the egyptians because they thought only pharaoh had power over the Nile.

I very much appreciate this summation - I'm working my way through the Great Courses series "Between the Rivers" and have long been fascinated with these most ancient peoples. It appears that the main thing the Akkadians were missing was a mythos that united the people, so that instead of feeling oppressed, they would feel a part of the deeds of the empire. I also wish that the origin myth of Sargon were complete. At the moment, it's sort of an ancient version of: 1 - Be raised in exile 2 - Be exiled again 3 - ??? 4 - Conquer the land between the rivers (profit!)

Im sorry but can you explain how chariots fight do they ram their horses to the enemy lines or not?
@0ji.a
@0ji.a 9 місяців тому
@@Jeremiah_Ainttherefrom what I know, chariots would be manned by a driver and a bowman or spearman, it’s like a highly mobile unit in ancient times. I don’t think they rode horses at this time of history either so this was what they’d do instead. And I don’t think it was until later that they added blades that would spin with the wheels as the chariot moved but it could’ve been an innovation at this time for all I know. If the chariot had blades on the wheels I’m pretty sure it was then used to break the enemy formations and create chaos in their ranks ? I’m no expert tho

Not yet , next ep will be about Lugal Utu-Hengal the Sumerian king who liberated the land of Sumer and Akkad from Ghot invasion , with the help of Ur-nmu who will be the emperor of Sumer and establish the Ur dynasty after the death of Utu-hengal .

@@hassanbassim4007 the youtuber will decide, of course, but it is impossible to make a video for every kings in ancient mesopotamia. I think they will make videos about great empires (Hittites, Assyrians, Bablyonians, maybe Mitanni ?), but not that much detail (impossible to show 2500 years of history in 10-minutes videos
@hassanbassim4007
@hassanbassim4007 5 років тому
ALN Alioshax true , but I think the next episode will be the last one about Sumerian civilization because after the Third dynasty of Ur there will be a huge cultural invasion from Aramaic nomadic people , and Elamites will attack Sumer and destroy it , making them completely under Amorites power and would later become amortized . However some of them will go deeply to the Marshes of Southern Mesopotamia and maintain their life style until this very day , they still would forget about their language and religion and convert to other cultures .

This era of history is interesting as to even get a basic idea of what happened intense arecheology was needed. In contrast, the basics about the Greeks and Romans were in the collective memory of educated people constantly after they declined. For example, we didn’t need to escalate to find out about the Iliad, but we didn’t discover Gilgamesh until the 1800s AD. That goes to show how much older the Mesopotamian civilizations are compared to the Romans. Crazy

5:00 the ritual of washing the royal weapons into the see , was an hint of a folktale or myth very important in the region ( and so much popular that we can recognize later greek legends) : the tale is the one of Baal becoming king of the gods after defeating his rivals Yam god of seas and Mot god of hell, when a mesopotamian king did this ritual it was like telling to everybody : "i defeated all kings , now i'm the king of kings as Baal is king of gods".and not a borders' thing.
