Not exactly how it works. The elected are the political party, in this case the Conservatives. The leader of the elected party becomes the Prime Minister. So while Sunak wasn't himself voted for by the public, he was voted for by the Conservative party members as their leader, and as such Prime Minister

We do not directly elect our Prime Minister. Having said that, the role of party leader has been shown to have an influence on how people vote. I believe Dunak is the fourth prime minister in this government, only one of which can claim to have a mandate from the British people.
