In a one hour South African special, Bondi Vet Dr Chris Brown is travelling far beyond his comfort zone to realise a lifelong ambition. In an extraordinary adventure, he will meet the ultimate lion whisperer Kevin Richardson and perform surgeries on two big cats. Dr Chris also joins in the battle to protect the endangered black rhino from poachers and makes friends with a hand reared cheetah and baby rhino. Throw in a mobile vet clinic to one of the poorest areas of Johannesburg and a school visit which results in some delightful impromptu dance classes for an Aussie vet who is finding the true spirit of South Africa.

well vets would go for cuddles to calm their patient but it would have gotten very akward if the nurse had attempted that with him. :D Sooo, treats it is. The sugar probably also helped to keep him from actually fainting - he did look very pale

I really like that he doesn't play too tough. He is honest about his intimidation. You should treat wild animals with that kind of respect. You should have a healthy amount of fear (not an ugly fear). Very good to see the level of fear and respect for the creatures.

FluffyFloof, If you are talking about Chris's fear of needles, we are not in control of true fears. The fact that he turned grey and nearly fainted tells you its a psychological fear that he can't control. Also, the spiders are not that big, they are just more poisonous.

@@sjhealed1 as a five year old I was held face down on a bed by four nurses while the doctor gave me a lumber puncture needle. They go through your spine and into your spinal cord to draw spinal fluid for testing.also I had regular needle for my bee allergy. As a result I don't have that severe allergic reaction that I used to if stung.. These days I still get nervous having needles an almost always flinch.

can't be sure if the same psychology that housecats have also applies to a 400lb lion, since they're not really making themselves vulnerable to you when exposing their belly, they're still the bigger predator

This is amazing. The lions have to have memory, have to have feelings, and consciousness to understand Kevin is not danger, he is a loved one, and he is part of the pride. I mean you could never ask an animal what their thinking but their behavior can really lead you to understand how complex their mind truly is.

When you interact with kids they remember that forever and also they will take everything they were told about caring for their animals will also stick with them and they will take it very serious bc of the pride they have of what to do and how to do.

This is such a great depiction of life in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is the Africa we don't see enough. There are families like ours living their lives with similar good times and bad. I spent a year in Kenya and it was very much like this.

I would have been bawling my eyes out. I'm the biggest wuss when it comes to needles. I have been stabbed, almost lost a finger, broken some bones got severe burns but didn't even shed a tear. But when it come to getting a vaccination you would see a grown up covered in scars crying like a child. Needles are the biggest NO NO to me.

I remember the day I broke my arm. I was afraid of needles until the medic called me out for having a lot of piercings but still be afraid of needles. My fear of needles were erased on that instant. Turns out embarassment can be a medicine😂

The videos of Chris in different cultures show a man with respect and joy in those cultures. I really like watching him. I also see true humility which is knowing where you are not better than as well as acknowledging where you are as good or better.

Wonderful trip. Particularly loved watching Kevin interact with his lions, especially the handsome and regal Napoleon. Such love. I guess it doesn't matter if it's a gerbil or a full grown male lion - your baby is your baby....

I'm glad and grateful that our Dr Chris was able to have this service-filled trip to Africa! Dr Chris talking to the lion "Its people in cages here". That cracked me up! The love and caring all the people worldwide give to animals touches my heart! I'm 62 years old, but if I was YOUNGER, I'd want to look into helping care for animals! I've seen animals on this show that I have never seen before, some I've never heard of before! I'm loving it and so thankful on the animal's behalf!

Lions are such beautiful animals!! The few people who do great work with lions and have these intense bonds with the animals is beautifully amazing! It just shows how affectionate they are when it’s someone they love and trust.

From many years of experience in Emergency Nursing, I find that adults patients are more afraid of needles , than pediatric patients. The anticipation is a lot worse than the actual injection.

This is the best matchup ever. Chris and Kevin seem to get along well with each other, and have that rare mutual respect and trust in each other, and natural curiosity about each other's worlds. Many kudos. I cannot, however, get over the age-old scientific method of "poke it with a stick."

Creating a bond like this with big cats is one of my dreams and to help them and their numbers in the wild. They’re absolutely gorgeous ❤️ But I will probably end up doing something with reptiles in the future.
