Ted Johnson joins Mike Felger and Michael Holley on Boston Sports Tonight to break down episodes 9 and 10 of "The Dynasty: New England Patriots" on Apple TV Plus and Robert Kraft's revelation that it was told to him that Bill Belichick's reason for benching Malcolm Butler in Super Bowl LII vs. the Eagles was not football related and was due to a personal issue between the two.

@user-on9dq1vk1b Місяць тому
@@Tsepete no argument there. But with Brady having a record breaking game and Foles making it a shoot out, disrupting one drive, stopping a 6, having the veteran knowledge, situational awareness etc mightve been enough. Ypu are 100 percemt correct that there is zero evidence Butler himself wouldve stopped the Eagles. But it is reasonable to think the Eagles might have thought twice about running the Foles-eligible TD play had NE secondary been at full strength. All I'm saying is that this one time BB chose an option that did not put them in a better mathematical position to win

It goes beyond just taking out the guy who’d played 97% of starts - it was that it was not only unexplained but inexplicable, that it was disruptive to the defense and the entire team, that the defense was clearly not up to the task of containing a backup journeyman QB without him.

@@joemagarac405 The following year, defense was the main reason why they won vs the Rams in the Superbowl. He made up for it for all you spoiled fans who spend more time complaining about the negative stuff that he did when it is outweighed by the positive. No other fan base experienced the joy of going to 50% of the Superbowls in 18 seasons. And if you say it all Brady, then we have to ask who had the final say when Brady was picked? Who made the decision to make Brady the starter when most fans and Kraft had doubts? Who came up with the game plan to slow down the greatest show on turf? Who made the final decision to bring in all the other players that contributed from Seymour to Gronk? The good outweighs the bad so much it's absurd that this is what spoiled Pats fans choose to focus on.

Butler's maturity issue that prevented him from being drafted arose this season. His success went to his head. Butler kept complaining about his contract. There was a point when Brady could’ve retired and probably saved his marriage, and he decided instead to keep playing forever to satisfy his ego and competitive drive. IMHO this new coach cares too much about being nicer to media than Bill was & what media says about him to maintain the laser focus on all the things that the most successful coaches do to win championships. My prediction is that there will be drama & he will not win a Super Bowl.

Malcolm Butler was torched by long balls all season long that year. He also wouldn't have been covering Clemment coming out of the back field or Ertz when he spread out. There's so much focus on Butler, but, he likely wouldn't have been that impact player people thought he was, and his play after this point shows that.

@petermanson3475 Місяць тому
@user-fe7py7ws1c No, you just don't have a clue what you're talking about. First off, it was Rowe that started over Butler, not Logan Ryan. Logan Ryan was also better than Butler at that point... but left and was playing in Tennesee at the time. Butler joined Ryan in Tennesee the next season, where he was heavily outplayed by him. As far as the Touchdowns you think Butler was going to prevent, which ones would they be? - the 21 yard TD run by Legarette Blount? How you figure he was going to do that? - The TD catch by Nick Foles, on the trick play? No, Foles wasn't the responsibility of the corners on the play, one of the linebackers was supposed to follow him out there. - The TD reception by RB Cory Clement? No, it was LB Elandon Roberts & Safety Patrick Chung on the coverage for that play. - The TD catch by TE Zac Ertz? No, it was Devin McCourty covering him on that play and he slipped. The only TD that comes into question was the TD catch by Alshon Jeffery, and he blanketed by Eric Rowe on the play, he just went up and high pointed the ball, and brought down an amazing catch... Alshon Jeffery at 6'5", outlept 6'1" Eric Rowe for the ball. Somehow, you think 2 inch shorter Malcolm Butler, who was beat by taller WRs all season, and was beat by Graham for that catch in 2014, was going to outleap a much taller Alshon Jeffery to the ball? Smh... Nah, Malcolm Butler was appropriately benched for this game. He may have been help as a better nickel backup to limit some yards, but he wasn't stopping the offensive scoring machine that both teams were in that game, and Philadelphia was all season long, regardless of QB.

I'll forever say pats should have won that game. Can't tell me a defense especially the secondary weren't in their heads in that game after the 2nd and 3rd time of the defense being on the field and In the huddle thinking "wheres Malcom ?" Players like mccourty and harmon (safeties) knew they could trust Malcom and his capabilities after playing every game together for 3 seasons. Players always say how close locker rooms are of championship teams so seeing one of your better players on the sidelines crying as nick fricken foles is looking like Payton Manning against defensive "genius" Belichick. That moved messed with the whole team that game. And whatever butler might have done couldn't of been that bad cause Belichick brought him back 2-3 years later.

I watched all but the last one and I think the entire series was an attack against Bill which I don't think he deserved. There was one interview with Belichek in which he answered the Malcolm question. In previous games with the eagles, Malcolm struggled and they showed video of that. So Bill played someone else who was closer in size to the receiver Malcolm would have had to cover. Could Malcolm have changed the game had he played? Maybe he could have or maybe they would have lost by a larger margin. We will never know...... It seems that everyone wants to villainize Bill for putting together the best team he could with what he had to work with, against a very good opponent!

Bill Belichick had completely soured on Butler when he turned down a contract extension in the '16 offseason. Due to an illness, Butler arrived solo in Minneapolis a day after the rest of the Patriots. On Thursday night he entered the team hotel minutes before curfew after attending a concert with Floyd Mayweather. Steven Belichick saw him walk in and away from prying eyes confronted Malcolm, questioning his level of commitment. The 2 men argued, w/ a furious Butler calling Steven "Daddy's Boy" among other things. After finding out about this incident Bill said nothing, but would use it as ammunition to devastate the former Super Bowl hero, regardless of what was best for his team.

It's funny Belichick expected his players to keep their mouth shut and their personal stuff out of the game and out of the media... So to know that something personal is the reason why you waited until minutes before the super bowl to tell your starting CB that he won't be playing. Instead of at least being merciful and deactivating him. But no he not only benched him but he made him watch too... To me it gives traction to the whole Steve Belichick's wife and Butler situation and whatever happened there. Now it's probably the one that makes the most sense to me.

Here's the one thing that you guys should have touched on that you didn't touch on. You tap danced around it. They said that Robert Kraft demanded that Bill Belichik trade Jimmy Garoppolo which he did to show confidence in Tom. Tom didn't have a contract going into 2020 so he could do whatever the heck he wanted at that point.He was a free agent. There's no way you can expect me to believe that Belichik thought or said that it was a good decision for Tom to leave because Belichik didn't have a legitimate quarterback on the roster. He had Stidham and Hoyer. He brought in Cam Newton late because nobody wanted him. Of course he expected Tom to come back on another shitty one year deal. He gambled and lost. The only way he would want Tommy to leave with what he had on the roster at QB at the time is if he wanted to stick it to his owner as payback for meddling with the Garoppolo situation. Robert Kraft is a businessman. If you weren't gonna have Tommy under contract for 2020 he should have been traded by the deadline in the last year of his deal for assets. How did you let him walk for free???!!!! Huge mistake. Who's fault is that?!!!!

Why is this relevant 7 or 8 years later! Also, from what kraft said, he doesnt know the real reason beyond it was hearsay and no one really knows unless bill told them and I highly doubt he did so this is women gossip and not facts! Bill didnt have a relationship with Brady much less butler for things to become personal. How would that make any sense that it became personal? personal over what? if he talk back to bill then it wasnt personal but being disciplined for insubordination and if its something bill wanted him to do but he didnt that would also be insubordination ! So, for things to have a personal effect, you first have to have a personal relationship!

This was intentional Sabotaged by Belichick as payback against TB12 and Robert Kraft for trading Jimmy G. Bill's ego got in the way. There was no rift between Butler and Matt P. This was so sinister and personal on the part of Bill. He made sure that TB12 would not win that superbowl. He wanted Brady to go that bad, but Kraft overruled him, and Jimmy G was traded. There is no explanation for sitting one of your best players on defense in a game of that magnitude. None. Kraft should have called down to the field and overruled the benching of Butler also. He had legitimate power to do so.
