Really dislike how many companies are moving in the direction of soldered ram only with no room of upgradeability.
@racerex340
@racerex340 Місяць тому
Has worked for Apple for years and their customers still literally throw money at them. PC manufacturers have also started ramping up more soldered storage as well in the hopes that it drives better product segmentation upsell and some sort of uptick in the refresh cycle. The latter is moronic with PC users though, because with Apple, an Apple user might by the base model and need to replace it after three years but they're almost certainly buying another Apple as there are no other MacOS options, but with PC, a user can switch between brands every upgrade cycle and still retain 98% of the same experience. It's greed, pure and simple, and we as consumers should shun them because of it, if only for the huge increase in E-waste they create as a result. RAM and SSD's should be upgradeable in every laptop or desktop computer, period.

@@Hathos9 you think ASUS actually would have used CAMM2 in this G14 if it was ready? What do people think about the estimates that CAMM2 RAM will cost roughly 50%-75% more per GB than the same chips on SODIMM modules for at least the first three years?
@Hathos9
@Hathos9 Місяць тому
@@racerex340 If they don't, people can vote with their dollars and buy laptops that are using CAMM2. That said, right now, I prefer soldered LPDDR5X on a thin laptop over DDR5 so I'm not faulting manufacturers for soldered this year. Next year, I will fault them and call them out.

5:16 so they say they went proprietary because USBC can only do 240W and the ASUS connector can do 350W....but then the laptop itself only pulls 180W as an absolute maximum...so why didn't they just do USBC and make everyone's lives easier?
@yorimirus

Agreed! We shouldn't take ASUS' word at it. If theirs is better than USB-C, they really would have shown the working out for it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 'compared to the worst ever USB-C charger we could find, and only by 1%'.
@fix0the0spade
@fix0the0spade Місяць тому
Moving away from the barrel connector does strike me as bizarre. There's lots of good quality power bricks out there that use the old school barrel connector. As for USB-C charging, that has it's own issues of fragility and for voltage regulators melting on the laptop's motherboard. I can see why ASUS would want to have a dedicated charging port that handles only power without worrying about data, but the new connector looks like a miss for me.

@@NANOTECHYT They have a reason and I assume it is that USBC charging remains an issue with breakage. By giving a proprietary charging port like Apple's MagSafe, Apple can create its own rugged port that they know will last the machine's life. I have been unlucky enough to have a laptop fall when charging and damage the USBC charging port, so I am 100% supportive of Apple and ASUS here.
@NANOTECHYT
@NANOTECHYT Місяць тому
@@andyH_England USB-C is rated for 10,000 mating cycles. Thats charging your laptop for 13 years, every day, at least once a day. The port will outlive the device. I have no idea what people are doing to their ports to cause breakages, I've never had a Mini-USB port break on me, let alone a USB-C port. If people are so worried about this, why isn't it such a problem with phones where everyone, even Apple is moving towards USB-C? I'll tell you why, because your excuse is bupkis, sorry I don't buy it for a second.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England Місяць тому
@@NANOTECHYT yeah the rating is good but the reality is if you accidentally knock it or it falls, unlike Magsafe, where the wire will just detach, it will probably cause damage to the USBC port. So having a proprietary charging port as well as USBC charging seems a sensible solution.

CAMM2 has its own issues, and no information suggests that Intel will adopt it. It will need to go through a year or two of testing for QC and reliability and therefore unlikely to be seen in the medium term. Imagine this scenario: the 2024 G14, sporting the familiar design of its 2023 predecessor but with a supposedly 'new' CPU. It's hard to ignite enthusiasm for a product that appears to be only a minor iteration. In contrast, what I'm presenting offers something novel to capture interest. Yes, it may perform slower than the previous generation, but it's essential to remember that there's no such thing as a perfect gaming laptop. Companies may provide everything but also make trade-offs. I'm optimistic that ASUS will enhance performance in the 2025 models, as we've witnessed this trend repeatedly.

For me the '24 is a perfect fit, & especially knowing that I'm supposed & expected to get a '23 if that wasn't the case for me, I'm not too worried about what they're doing, it's not like they killed the '23 anyways!

So let's get this straight... There's no RAM upgradeability anymore, they removed it. They removed fingerprint unlocking too. The CPU performs similarly, but the GPU performs worse. The re-designed chassis is better in some ways but worse in others, but aesthetically imo it looks worse. They use a proprietary charging port instead of USB-C, despite the laptop not drawing more than 180W, which is within the USB-C spec so they could've used USB-C anyway. The screen is now OLED, except it's dimmer and you have the risk of burn in, it's also slower in terms of refresh rate too, so why exactly would you want that on a "gaming laptop"? On a professional laptop, sure the screen makes sense, but not on a laptop geared towards gaming, I'd much prefer as a gamer 240Hz IPS or 360 Hz VA/TN or something miniLED instead. They also bumped up the price outside of the U.S to kick anyone in the nuts who was even looking at this as an option. How exactly is this a win or a better product? Looks like trash to me, the only improvement I can say is that the speakers are better and the keyboard deck doesn't flex anymore. Otherwise the 2023 G14 is better.

The 12GB 4080 125W G14 2023 remains a unique option as it's literally the only laptop on the planet to pair a pheonix range APU with a 4080 giving both good battery life and exceptional performance for the form factor. For instance the 4080 125W is 50% faster than the 90W 4070 on the 2024 G14 and let's not forget 50% more VRAM! The old G14 also had on upgradable memory stick and with around 170W overall thermal capacity - it was an engineering marvel. The tiny thing hits a whopping 19k on CBR23 multicore when undervolted as the 7940HS has official support for curve optimizer! The 2023 4080 G14 had no competition but the 2024 G14 has plenty of competition.

That’s why all of these reviews piss me off so much. ASUS/Razer/Dell/Etc have been like “here’s a 4070 laptop for 2024 that costs more!” and all the reviews have just glossed over entirely how an 8gb 4070 90w is a fucking ripoff for $2000, regardless of form factor. Nvidia shafting all of us.

There are plenty of thick heavier bulkier gaming laptops with replaceable RAM. No one is forcing you to buy the G14. Many do not care about RAM upgradeability; we buy what we need. Also, the new RAM is different from what you think. If you have 32GB and want to upgrade to 64GB then you cannot buy another 32GB module, you have to buy 64GB and replace the 32GB which becomes e-waste if you cannot sell it. So you wont save money and it will be more hassle than it is worth.
@diegosanchez894
@diegosanchez894 Місяць тому
@@andyH_England, none were as a good and complete package as the g14, or came at a heavy premium. rather than upgradeability it's about repairability too. Ram can fail and I?d rather buy a dimm and get it going than sending it to a technitian or replacing the device outright. The only reason this was done was for thinness, which is stupid because people who liked the g14 liked it for it's good thinness to power compromise, it was already thin enough, but they kept pushing in that direction to the point they compromised on the other important aspects of a laptop.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England Місяць тому
@@diegosanchez894 I hear "RAM can fail" but does it that often, if it does, to any significance? Worrying about RAM failing is a waste of worrying time as the GPU, OLED and other components are likely more likely to fail before RAM. Just buy enough RAM and be done, is what I would suggest. Please provide data to back up yours and others claim that RAM fails on its own to a level that is not nominal.

The tinkerer in me feels a little bit sad by some of the design choices, but most of the people buying this are probably tech-inept to the point that they won’t care about upgradeability anyways. The engineering is still impressive I’ve talked to someone in IT procurement and apparently a year ago Intel has restricted OEMs from shipping AMD systems w/ Intel Wi-Fi cards (which means it’s either Mediatek or Qualcomm Wi-Fi cards), so at least the wifi card isn’t soldered and you can upgrade it to a different unit
