Roman Osadchuk is a research associate for Eurasia at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab). Roman Osadchuk research disinformation narratives and technology uses for their spread in the region. He is interested in the role of information policy and media cycle in the spread of disinformation. Before joining DFRLab, he held several positions in Ukraine Crisis Media Centre (UCMC), where he was involved in communications of decentralization reform. Roman received a master’s in public administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University, where he focused on information policy.

Great Interview. I think there is a degree of arrogance in modern media that facilitates their ability to treat every story as a narrative, rather than a fact finding mission. Corporate media's failure to adapt is one of the larger problems we face in social media's post-truth world. 💙💛

Meh I’d argue it’s the US’ abysmal, chronically underfunded education system that’s failing Americans. We don’t have this level of nonsense in Canada, just neighbours, because we have some of the highest post-secondary education rates in the world 🌍…we also aren’t guilty of ongoing human rights violations, have a liveable min wage, family/parental leave, vacations, have codified trans human rights into law (we don’t use oppressed minorities as political pawns) and women have a right to choose, along with universal healthcare. The US is lacking in every aspect, they’re a mess! It isn’t as simple as blaming mainstream media…think deeper, SMH! 🤦🏼‍♂️

there's some good ppl who specialize in it, including Julia Davis, who's been on here. But she's not the only one, there's several others, and interestingly mostly women from what i've seen, with ultra deep knowledge of the disinfo sphere

Media is a HUGE problem. I would have some respect for an outlet that put out a headline like 'RU CLAIMS, with no evidence, that 65 POW's on downed plane'. Honestly, just tell the GD facts if you want to be perceived as a reputable source of information. Thanks Jonathon and Roman for a great interview on this subject matter.

Hello Jonathan 👋 I loved Roman's comment about the use of humour to undermine the russian narrative. I think it ties neatly into the phrase 'many a true word said in jest'. In this instance, the underlying message behind the meme or cartoon or acerbic comment or joke, is that there is a truth here but by mocking, we not only reveal that truth, we also annoy and humiliate the target of the joke. I think that British people are particularly good at taking the p*ss. Or maybe it's just me! 🤔 Slava Ukraini 🇬🇧🇺🇦💛💙

Thank you, Jonathan, for inviting Roman Osadchuk. Such an important topic in this super election year. I hope, you will continue to promote fighting propaganda before EU elections (even though - unfortunatley - the UK is no longer in it). It would be great, if you can convince people to go out and vote. In some of the countries, electoral turnout is not very high, and if we all advertise our pro-Ukraine and pro-EU citizens to go and vote, we might have a stronger EU parliament as well as leadership. I totally agree. Young minds can be swayed by uncoroborated peer information. Sadly many adults in USA suffer the same problem or have agendas that they will blindly follow regardless of damage done to their own countries. It happens elsewhere too however the division in USA is currently insane.

I appreciated Roman's explanation that humor is a coping method. It allows one to back-off from a situation, gain a wider perspective, and re-frame the situation. I use a lot of humor in my daily life and have often noticed that some people, who take themselves and the world too seriously, think that humor is 'frivolous'; they are unable to gain a detached perspective. But Humor is truly very strong. And I love the Ukrainian 'memes' !

another excellent discussion! some take aways stemming from what Roman suggested: A) Visually and orally Calling out russian sources - naming and shaming. B) Quoting sources - Content Creators, regardless if they cover Ukraine or not, if they are serious about passing along information ~ Quote sources in the descriptions so folks can verify for themselves. and setting this as an industry standard or best practice. And C) fill the void in Telegram D) Sensitivity- taking more care not to amplify the disinformation

I've noticed that people with tyrannical tendencies have very little humor, they are very thin skinned. Jokers have always been around it seems, they seem to notice what is happening and can tell the truth, in a certain sort of way that cuts through.

Absolutely. It’s a legitimate question for any American to ask of the candidate they are favoring. Very quickly you will find Donald has great ideas. But he doesn’t know how. Evidence is he never built a wall. He has no plan for Ukraine’s victory. Never did and never will. So is it Nikki Haley? At least she has shown evidence of a backbone when it comes to our enemy, Russia.

Would you please, please sort out your blurry effect or get rid of it!! Every video the sides of your head and glasses keep disappearing and dematerialising randomly. It is increadibly irritating when trying to watch and turns a great video into hard to watch garbage.

This is a 'feature' of the AI blurring the background in most video cam software. Can I suggest you just listen if you find it distracting? Jonathan's format doesn't rely on visuals like maps, videos, etc, and so just treat it as radio. 👍
