Full Korean here! Just wanted to maybe help your confusion, Joel. KPop is not actually a genre - it encapsulates many genres such as pop, hip-hop, trot, etc. That is why there are so many different types and why you maybe think things don’t sound “KPop”.
@ravitheja715
@ravitheja715 3 роки тому
The problem is that internationally, people got habituated to associating K-pop with BTS and BP songs, therefore they expect every other korean song to be just as heavily beat based, 'energetic', autotuney and with good production. I like that you're clearing it up for Joel and the others, but they can't exactly change how they perceive K-pop.

One of the songs you hadn’t heard before but liked (Blood, Sweat, and Tears by BTS) is actually beautifully done and I think if you listen to it, watch the music video and then look at a video where people explain all the “hidden” aspects of the song because it had soo much even just in the background and it was beautiful. From the lines RM says to the paintings and feast, everything in the video pretty much means something. It got me into kpop and I was surprised learning everything about it.

I also have an underlying guilty pleasure for this song without knowing why or how this happened. I had my phone on shuffle plugged into my car just yesterday and Gangnam Style came on (I have the oddest range of genres and also would never plug my phone into any open DJ at a party as it could be worse when I have Gangnam Style, then Negro y Azul from the introduction of a breaking bad episode of which I know all words to in Spanish as well as now a few Narco style songs which is niche, then on comes Locuste Iste 4 part Latin voca harmony from before the 20th century next, yes all words are also known due to it being an academic study piece for me but I love it) but the Gangnam shuffle hit me and I was not mad in the slightest. I was just as much my 19 college self loving this bop ten years on, then followed Georgia by Ray Charles and as much as I love, it did bring down my hyper bopping driving to Gangnam at full blast. It’s an unironically bop and I hate it because I cannot explain why it hits so hard but it’s also so so bad! It’s just a sweet spot for me too!

I feel that besides K-pop, you could perhaps look into Korean rock bands and idol bands that play their own instruments, such as DAY6, LUCY, Xdinary Heroes, Hyukoh, CNBlue, FTIsland, The Rose, ONEWE and so many more. IMO, they're a genre of their own and differ from the regular K-pop flavour the general public is used to. I'd be excited to see you do a video about these rock bands.

Actually, it is the opposite. K-pop is traditionally defined as a genre that is a collection of genres, which is absurd. Now, it is more appropriately defined as the industry or the idol culture itself because every K-pop song is still can be classified as actual genres hip-hop, r&b, electro, dance, rock, etc. K-pop is basically the pop of Korea.

Baek Ji Young was cool coz she was doing a lotta fusions especially with salsa. Lee Jung Hyun had a lot of techno ish music and was trying to do a think where she put the mic (when not lipsyncing) on her pinky and danced like that. Then I'm a fan of rock and technoish stuff so I loved a lot of stuff that Moon Hee Jun did. I've been away for a long time and when I was trying to make a demo my producer got me into Brown Eyed Girls. I was complaining to him about how some newer groups were copying older groups and he admitted he helped with one of those as well. Now I'm starting to come back with BTS and Black Pink

"When kpop starts sounding like THE kpop" - and then there's us old fans who miss the times when kpop was more diverse while also having eras with specific Western influences (the 2015-ish tropical house was everywhere, even in kpop, but there were dozens of other music styles as well). Kpop is not just well-produced electronic music with great choreo, it's the pop-rock Dreamcatcher or Day6, it's amazing vocalists like IU and Mamamoo, the cute GFriend and Twice pop, the powerful B.A.P. and old BTS, the experimental Orange Caramel and Big Bang, the retro Infinite and T-ARA... K-pop has had milions of fans internationally before BTS and Blackpink exactly because it had a specific flavor, but it was also as diverse or even more diverse than Western music. I mean TVXQ had entered the Guinness World record for the biggest fanclub of 800k (I think) before BTS and Blackpink even existed (not dissing them, just comparing time-wise).

I am into Kpop since last year(2021) and have done a lot of research on Kpop. And I think that 2nd generation of Kpop was fun, because there was far less toxicity in fandoms compared to now... Then if other idols danced to other group's songs then they would not ship them or spread rumours. But now, just smiling when some idols are performing is enough for toxic fans or haters to ship them or create stupid rumours... Who else agree with this thought?

I think the genre and style is also represented by the agency they are from (?) But Kpop has definitely came a very long way and the artistes have really worked hard to get where they are. It's also a very harsh reality especially in S.Korea where it gets very competitive and the community can get really critical about the artistry hence Kpop isn't just all about BTS or Blackpink but how all these agencies gathered groups of amazing entertainers of different expressive styles and music to present you Kpop and beyond.

What struck me was how few of the songs he knew. Also, the selection was quite hit or miss and he rarely if ever got the context. Nothing “Ultimate” here. For example, while he got GG’s Into the New World, for example, he didn’t understand its significance. He got Exid’s Up and Down, but not the famous Hari fan-cam that launched the fan-cam craze (and saved, more than saved, Exid’s career). There are certainly fans who like, say, Twice or Itzy better than BP, but he really should have emphasized BP’s overwhelming recent dominance as a group and as soloists, matched only by BTS. He missed or underplayed top soloists, such as IU or Sunmi, who, by the way, write many of their own songs. Quite a few of the songs were from early in the groups’ careers, which didn’t let them shine or show their progress. I agree with the comments that KPop is a broad tent, it’s like calling all U.S. popular music USPop. All in all, a mediocre and not very informative piece of work, and that’s leaving aside my mild distaste for the occasionally snarky tone.
