I think they intentionally made the SAE gear oil numbers double engine oil values so they were not easily mixed up. Aircraft engine oils are also double.

Back in the early 90s I got ahold of a 2.8 v6 fiero that had some very evident low end knock. I ran 80/90 gear oil to quiet the knock and drove it this way for 3 years.

I had a 250 I-6 Chevy in a '63 wagon, It had been owned since new by a taxi driver who drove it back and forth, repeatedly, every year to Florida from Missouri.. The rest of the time, he was using it as a taxi.. When he gave it to me, it had 350,000 miles on it, and he showed me the records. The heads had never been off, and the motor was working hard to make 75 psi in 5 cylinders and 95 in one. In the summer, it would start and run just fine, though it was pretty gutless and to say it smoked was understating things a bit. Being broke didn't leave me any choices,(this was 1985), so I pulled the pan and filter and refilled with 2 qts of Harley Davidson 80-90, a qt. of Motor Honey and topped off with SAE 50. That pulled the pressure up and got it humming. It felt brand new until things heated up and thinned things out a bit but it was still a lot better than when I got it. When I sold it, I included the log book and told them what I had done, didn't BS the fella none. That money got me to Fla. where I got decent work.

12:50 Conversely, if during said zombie apocalypse you lose the gear oil out of a differential or other driveline module, you can use an SAE 60 or 20W-50 to get you home safely.

From working on my '98 Jeep XJ, it's stuck in my head that 75w-85/90 is ~10W-30 (viscosity, not chemistry). This entire video reinforces that. Awesome.

Had an old beat up and battered maverick back in the 80's. The engine was completely worn out and burned/leaked more oil than the exxon valdez. I used to drain 5 gallons at a time of waste oil out of the tank at work and carry it around for use in that old maverick. That waste tank had a mixture of used motor oil, auto trans fluid, gear oil, brake fluid etc etc....you name it and it was probably in there. I ran that old worn out maverick for several years entirely on what came out of that waste tank. Never had a single mechanical engine failure and the old gal was still running when i sold it after 350 thousand miles. Sometimes you gotta' do what you gotta' do to keep things rolling down the road a bit longer. That old maverick was a prime example of use what you can afford and hope it works out, fortunately it did

We accidentally filled about 15 cars with gear oil in the service bay because the delivery truck filled the wrong tank 😂😂😂

Richard did multiple dyno runs with all different oil weights. The trend was that thin oil provided less drag on the crank to make more horsepower. In his test 20-50 made the most power because piston ring seal with thick oil made more power and over came crank splash

Gear oil and motor oil use different ratings. 80w90/75w90gear oil is the same viscosity as sae40 to sae50 motor oil at temp. 75w140 will be around sae60 motor oil at temp. Edit:"I need to watch more than half way through before I comment".

When i was 13 i asked a mechanic why EP oil was not used in engines. Im 45, im a mechanic. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart. 😂

It might not be such a good idea with newer engines but old ones nearing the end of their service life tend to not have any issues with it. I've run many with gear oil and it worked well.

My Dad ran gear oil and engine oil mixed in the old dump truck. That truck was horribly worn out and smoked badly. He rarely used it though and it's job was about once a month to pull a load from the top of the hill to the bottom. Going downhill it didn't exactly need loads of power, the brakes working is what were the primary concern on that old 1950's International rusty dump bucket.

Very informative and not overly surprising. An engine will run on just about anything. I've tried peanut oil, corn oil, even jet turbine oil in lawn mowers... They all run perfectly fine short term.

Freedom Worx is using a low-cost analog to the classic Saybolt falling-ball viscometer, which was the source for SSU viscosity numbers. SSU =>> Saybolt Seconds Universal. It timed the ball falling through a known distance, and the longer the time, the higher the viscosity. He got all of the basic technical points I was aching to point out when I clicked on the video. In my opinion, he's a righteous oil guy. I've wanted to run gear oil in an engine for years. Knowing that the viscosity ranges overlap engine oil ranges, I knew it would work in the short term, and the gear oil would have plenty of wear protection for the engine. But for long-term use, gear oil doesn't have the chemistry required to resist corrosion or soot agglomeration from the products of combustion. (But he mentioned that.) If you're really brave, try running gear oil in your Duramax for a couple of years.

I don't think running it for such a small period will trash the engine. Running it longer would be required to show why you don't want to do this unless you went with a thicker gear oil. Gear oil behaves differently under the extreme high heat inside of an engine rather than in the gear chambers it's designed to run in. Obviously, this means it will not behave as the manufacturer intended. Add to that the different contaminates it faces, it clearly isn't fully compatible. It is interesting to see the results, and shows that the lowest thickness gear oil is much thinner than you would expect. p.s. You might want to do some rust treatment on that undercarriage to halt that rust pitting. Someone needs to invent a nice rust dissolving primer and a paired heavy enamel for that. It would likely double the life span of mufflers and such, while making the main undercarriage and frame last 10 times as long. For people that like shiny they should make one that can go over plating (chrome, nickle or otherwise.)

A fairly common thing for enthusiasts of old 2 stroke motorcycles like myself is to run 75w90 gear oil in the gearbox as opposed to the motor oil that's typically specified. It's understood to be better suited for both the gears and the clutches, but you can't typically get away with that on 4 strokes, where the gearbox and clutch usually share the oil with the engine.

Bearings with yellow metal love those sulfuric pressure additives.

Love your explanations. Any chance of going over those 'tuner chip' mods? Or other power adding things like 'performance' enhancing air filters. Also I found a Donaldson filter would fit my jeep and it's supposed to be a lifetime filter. Thought you might like that one.

I always fill, or at least "wet" both the oil, gasoline filters. Less initial shock to the filter medium that way.

I don't know if anyone has made this comment earlier, but the "W" in the grade does not stand for the weight of the oil. It is next to the lower viscosity number for a reason. W stands for Winter. The lower number is the viscosity of the oil at the tested cold temp for cold weather start up. The oil is actually thinner when it is cold and gets thicker when it gets hot. Example, an oil marked 10W-40, in the winter when it's cold the oil will have a viscosity of 10. Why? Because it makes it easier to start the car. Back in the day when cars first came out, they would run only one viscosity of oil. They didn't come with electric starters and had to be hand cranked. The oil would get so thick it made the engine hard to hand crank and start. Many people would drain as much of the oil as they could in the winter and go in the house to heat it up on the stove, ending with a fire. Even when electric starters came out the oil got so thick the battery would drain before it would start. Back then they would use the thinner oils for winter and thicker for summers. The old owners manuals would call for an SAE 5W, 10W or 20W in the winter and SAE 20 or SAE 30 oil in the warmer weather. We put a couple quarts of 250W Gear oil and straight Kendall Nitro 70 in a Demo Derby car.....And mixed up 2-stroke Gas 50:1 for the top end lube....Because Cooling systems don't really last....Won the Feature...and sold the car for the motor at the end of the nite....Man if only he knew.... The only demo car where money was made!

Bro for me the icing on the cake was the oil filter half way full. That way nobody gets mad 🤣🤣🤣🤣
