Day 268. Today, we discuss Russia digging trenches far back from the front lines. This follows the news that more than 10 million Ukrainians were without electricity last night after Russia again pounded the country's energy infrastructure.
And we hear how Russian state television has evolved to deal with Ukraine’s success on the battlefield.

Drones will decide the future of this war. Whomever can deploy the most drones and the most capable drones. That is it in a nutshell. The Phoenix Ghost could provide a major battlefield and reconnaissance advantage with 6 hours flight duration, plus night time operation capability along with the ability to destroy tanks. Potentially a game changer if deployed in sufficient numbers.

Innovative Ukrainian attacks. The Russian Iskander mobile short-range ballistic missile has a range of 500km and packs a 1000 lb warhead. The Ukrainians have several of these and at least some rockets. Guidance is either optical recognition or inertial. 30 meter (98 ft) accuracy with inertial guidance (probably the version the Ukrainians have) Russian versions have the much better optical guidance AND in-flight guidance countermeasures to avoid missile defenses. (Interestingly, verified video footage indicates the Ukrainians have captured at least one Russian Iskander). The Kerch bridge is already within range of an Iskander launched from Dnipro Airport. BUT, An Iskander would easily be shot down by the defending S300 batteries, and the Ukrainians don’t have enough for a massed attack to attempt to overwhelm the multiple air defenses. Even if some university students could craft a GPS guidance package for an Iskander (and they could). They still could not get past the air defenses.

Nope. Criminals must be convicted of their crimes, even when they're not (currently) in custody. Eventually, the war will end. And all of the war criminals will have to watch where they go. Targeting civilians has been the hallmark of war in the 20th century, from the wholesale destruction of cities to the so-called wars of liberation across the Third World. It could be argued that the careful war the British fought during the Malayan Emergency, of separating the guerrillas from their base of support among the people, was an anomaly, as wholesale slaughter and ethnic cleansing is the cheap and not-so-cheerful method employed by the armed and uniformed thugs who rule those countries. Only Russia's crushing defeat will force any change in their doctrine, which harks back to the origins of organized and permanent armies in the 18th century. Prussia's crushing defeat by Napoleon forced it to begin a radical re-examination of its doctrine, realizing that it needed to institutionalize military excellence and that it couldn't rely on a Frederick the Great to come along to save it from defeat. The results could not only been seen in the three swift wars Prussia conducted, and won, in the 19th century, but the tenacity and effectiveness of its armed forces in two world wars when its military effectiveness was inversely matched by the incompetence and ineptitude of Germany's political leadership. Russia has had no such incentive to change its ways. If anything, Soviet successes in the Second World War only reinforced the notion that their doctrine, which relied on a terrified and supine peasant population to "die in place" rather than face the wrath of the NKVD, was the only way to fight a war. We forget that it took the Red Army four years to defeat the Germans, who invaded Russia with a smaller army than the Soviets, were being bombed by the British and Americans and were fighting them on two other fronts.

Two Russians and a Ukrainian are found guilty of murder for shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014 by a Dutch court, while no United States sailors on USS Vincennes were found guilty of murder for downing Iranian Airlines Flight 655 in 1988 (it seems some were given military awards). m.ukposts.info/have/v-deo/i5ijqZ6JooWB1Ik.html m.ukposts.info/have/v-deo/nl1_qXiugIh-uXk.html I understand that any legal procedings are in different jurisdiction, but there appears to be a lot of hypocrisy in reaction of the American establishment over these two incidents.
