Russia’s entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, Manizha Sangin, has spoken of the hatred she’s received after voicing support for the LGBT community, women’s rights and migrants.
The Tajikistan-born singer is heading to Rotterdam with the female empowerment anthem ‘Russian Woman’.
She has been met with a barrage of abuse from nationalist politicians and online commentators.

@@cultfiction3865 From what I know, she grew up in Russia, so here is the difference. Even if you're born in a different country, if you move to another you're more likely to grow up on that culture.

The saddest thing is, that people in Russia don’t like her for her ethnicity. They don’t care about her talent neither her hard work, but they more care about her being a “tajik” girl. I’m not speaking about all Russians, because some did showed their support, but unfortunately very few of them. I hope they can realize how talented she is and don’t judge her by her nationality and be less racist about it.

I think that plenty of Russians showed our support since she won the popularity vote in Russia and that is how she is representing the country this year. But yes, I agree, it is incredibly sad that some ppl are so cruel and frankly not very smart to hate somebody for above said reasons.

false. most of Eurovision contestants were not Russian. We don't like this song which appropriates and mocks our culture. and how Manizha handled critisism -instead of admitting her fault of using slanderous words, she doubled down turned round and is calling everyone a racist who stand up for our culture .

@Tinnu, right, but if you really know the history, you would know that Russia once was colonized by Tatars and Mongols, and paid contributions, ppl from the east attacked Russians, stole, kill, raped. So yeah, I don't feel bad that the tables were turned, and that we concured the land to bring pice to our borders. Btwnever treated it as a colony. I do feel bad that some Russians don't realize that saying nasty things about minorities is extremely stupid and destroys the country from inside.

I’m Russian and I like Manizha’s song for Eurovision, because it’s partly in Russian and inspired by Russian folk music. I think Eurovision is the contest where European nations should share their own culture, that’s why I’ve always supported contestants who sing in their mother tongue even if I don’t understand the meaning of song. It’s true, a lot of Russian people don’t like the fact that Manizha goes to Rotterdam with this song, but it’s completely wrong to say that the main and only reason of it - Russian nationalism and misogyny. Firstly, Manizha was compared to Little Big, nobody else was expected to represent Russia this year but this music band. Russians were longing to see Little Big in Rotterdam, because their single “UNO” became a hit. Secondly, Manizha’s music is definitely not typical for a Eurovision contestants from Russia and it’s targeted at young people, who hardly watch Eurovision, to tell the truth. So, there are a lot of another very important reason why a part of Russian audience doesn’t support Manizha and her song. Some people didn’t like Manizha’s nationality, but, once again, it’s incorrect to say ALL Russian Manizha’s haters don’t support her just because of it. Unfortunately, this wrong point was main in this video and this has unfairly worsened the image of Russia and Russian people.

For me her performance was very eye-opening. I’m a lesbian from Finland so I’ve learned to think that basically all Russians hate gay people and don’t care if women face domestic abuse. But seeing her perfom made me remember that, you know, it’s a big country. There are a lot of conservative people, but there are all kinds of other people there as well and it’s not right for me to stereotype Russians that way. The fact that someone is Russian says nothing about their values or personality.

I am a Latvian born Russian and I admire Manizha's art and her social justice standpoint, her courage and vulnerability, her sincerity. Her art is genuine, not commercialised, and she creates music with heart-felt inspirational messages about de-stigmatisation, breaking of the stereotypes and promotes self-love and self-acceptance, all the while supporting charities that help refugees, LGBT community and victims of domestic violence in Russia. I think she is a fantastic role model to the young generation, full of compassion, acceptance and open-hearted, brave and daring, whilst being able to retain her divine feminine qualities. My Russian soul feels so proud. I feel that finally Russia has a contestant that is genuine, raw and not some sort of polished westernised version, so worthy! All points go toooooo MANIZHA!!!!

Let's not mix things here - the Russian and then Soviet women got all their rights straight after the revolution, over 100 years ago. The state was always supportive and promoting women - from the best childcare to education opportunities, healthcare and all kind of help which is uknown to many Western women until now, let alone 50 years ago. The problem is that the culture is still patriarchic in many ways and the angst of " what will people say" dictates to many women, especially less educated or those from smaller towns ,the rules of conduct. That's exactly what Manizha is talking about.
