Russia tightens grip on Ukraine's Donbas Region | DW News

Рік томуMoscow has set it sights on gaining control of the Donbas, Ukraine's industrial heartland. Russian troops are attempting to encircle Ukrainian forces by seizing key highways in the region.
Ukraine says 50 towns in the region came under shelling Thursday, which killed at least 9 people. With Russian troops gaining ground, residents here see no escape in sight.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is frustrated that the European Union has struggled to reach a consensus on its latest sanctions against Russia.
"How many more weeks will the European Union try to agree on a sixth package?" Zelenskyy said during a late-night address.
Ukrainian authorities there are facing a massive undertaking in investigating crimes committed by Russian soldiers. More than 13.000 cases of crimes against civilians, including the murder, rape and torture are being investigated. In the Kyiv region even months after the occupation, new crimes are discovered every day.

ruz WILL inevitable lose the war. As for winning particular battles - they've been doing that from day 1, but those are tactical successes, they don't change the big picture. And yeah, we relied on some stuff that was promised but not delivered. We probably can push back without any help too, eventually, but it's going to take much longer and thus will be much bloodier for both sides, civilians caught in between and the infrastructure on the way. Which is why we've been asking for faster weapons supply. The faster it gets here, the faster we can reassemble and start pushing ruz out of our land, and the less blood will be spilled in the process.

Not really “overwhelmed”. The Ukrainians lose a few villages in the Far East, but the Russians are losing a lot more in failed river crossings and ambushes as the Ukrainians stall for the time for additional heavy weapons to be shipped in. The big plan is to counterattack massively by August to September.

I know I am not there and I don't have a lot of information, but the conflict/war has been going on for 3 months. I am just curious why most of the civilians that are still there didn't attempt to get out earlier when it would have been much easier with roads and vehicles available the first couple of months into the conflict/war. Also, the way the Western news media has been reporting, it seems like there isn’t much of a problem because they keep saying the Russians are being badly defeated.

@Ernie Bell • You sound like someone with no elderly neighbors. If you've ever tried to get them to give up their whole life to move to a safer retirement home, you would know how difficult it is. Residents in the Donbas have been shelled since 2014 so they have been desensitized and thought they were prepared. Also, farmers can't pack up their land. As to the western media, they reported battlefield successes when Ukraine had them. Now that media is reporting the setbacks. No war I've ever heard about goes all one way. Military experts have been warning of the difficulties Ukraine would face in the Donbas as Russia consolidated its troops and had shorter supply lines. As long as Ukrainians don't give up, I won't. What about you?

I am not pro war, you have to be a sociopath to want war. But ask yourselves a simple question: why is Russia in Ukraine? Does the biggest country by landmass need more land? No, it can barely mange the existing land it currently has in its control. Is the most resource rich country in the world need more resources? No, it has absolutely everything it requires and then some. If it is not land and resources, then why is Russia in Ukraine? What could it possible want? Why would it spend billions and lose countless number of lives? Maybe there's more to it than what the western media is feeding us? Why is Russia trying to be so surgically precise in this war and not kill as many civilians? Russia has all the capabilities to level Ukraine in days without sending a single soldier there, but that's not what it is doing.

Lets get one thing straight, RU is gaining territory which will remain theres, so they dont have an intrest to destroy infrastructure. On the other hand, UA army is hiding in a civilian buildings, because its easier like that and when RU target them, then they are the evil one. Just please don't allow for troops to get encircled and cut off again like Mariopool..💔. It's always more worth it to back up, pull back and save troops and keep supplies and support coming in and keeping men alive. That is way more important than anything else. We already learned that ground CAN be regained. We saw it in the North. So just stay optimistic. You got this guys!!!!! I hope European nations send in support troops if needed, and I think it is needed and would greatly benefit this conflict.

Взять хотя бы к примеру город Лиман с населением около 30 тысяч, которую вчера захватили русские всего лишь за 2 дня, они оставили небольшой коридор, чтобы уцелевшие войска ВСУ смогли отступить (во время отступления некоторые были уничтожены авиацией), если бы русские полностью окружили город, то бой шли бы как минимум неделю, а может больше, и разрушений было бы намного больше, а так город практически не пострадал, потерь тоже относительно мало, а враг деморализован

It's hard to understand how the world watches a massacre like this and allows it to happen and continue to happen in a nation without the means to defend itself on an equal basis. So it was in Syria, Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Crimea and now the rest of Ukraine. Even with current "aid" the difference in strength is abysmal and those who have the ability to help, when not just watching and allowing, are implying that victims submit to their executioner.
