Russian Bashushkas and Dedushkas are the best. My wife's are sadly no longer with us, but we remember them with love and respect. Dedushka was in the siege of Moscow when he was 14 years old working in a factory.

The counter-point you made to your grandmother's nostalgic view of the Soviet era regarding collectivism and propaganda was very well made. The difficulty for most societies is striking the proper balance between the collective and the individual...we still see that repeatedly today. Your grandmother seems like a truly wonderful soul.

It must be wonderful to have a grandmother who is the hub of your family wheel. My grandmother was an alcoholic, she was abusive and stole from my father and spent time in prison for fraud for stealing from other people's mail. I have few good memories of Grandma Brown. She was a horrible person, but I loved her the best I could.
