Western militaries train junior officers and senior enlisted people to lead from the front. Captains and sergeants know the mission and they figure a way through or around the roadblocks. In most cases, colonels and generals don't need to spend a large amount of time on the frontlines when the situation is fluid.

Compartmentalisation is such that junior officers and senior NCOs are placed at the front, they know what they need to know and no more. Whilst NATO militaries aren't as free as they should be for junior officers and NCOs to exercise initiative, they still have far more operational flexibility and initiative than Russian officers and NCOs which has lead to Colonels and even Generals having to put themselves into active combat zones and getting themselves and their men killed. Compartmentalisation is important not just for maintaining operational security but also to keep command and control intact.

We would give up with pleasure, but there are a couple of problems: 1. Ukraine is even worse than Russia in terms of quality of life 2. the passion of Ukrainians to torture prisoners. Of course, we would consider your proposal if every Ukrainian platoon had an officer from some civilized country to monitor the situation of the prisoners, and in addition, a subsequent move to Germany, Canada, or a similar pleasant country was possible. In the meantime, we will have to fight for Putin - the salary is large, the prospects for a good pension, and of course we must not forget that every fighter hopes for good loot.
