This video is about Russian collaboration in World War II and focuses on the SS RONA, also known as the Kaminsky Brigade led by Bronislav Kaminsky. This unit's full name was the Waffen-Sturm-Brigade der SS RONA and later it became known as the 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS RONA (1st Russian). They ruled over the so-called Lokot Autonomy (or Lokot Autonomous Region) which was under control by Konstantin Voskoboynik and after his death Kaminsky rose to power. They unleashed a reign of terror in the Lokot and later helped the Germans with crushing the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Eventually the unit was merged into the Russian Liberation Army (ROA) under collaborating general Andrey Vlasov. He would later establish the Russian People's Liberation Committee (KONR).

the best source of information about Lakot Republic you can find here UKposts "Запретная тема: Локотская республика. Писатель Сергей Верёвкин" . as a Litwin I don't like what they did in Eastern Belarus in 1944 still. 1) the LR was located on ethic Belarusian lands (the GDL) ethic Muscovites are too slavish , they ´d never pull off it. 2) the L. residence to Moscow commie occupation hold until 70s. 3) upraise against soviet stalinists started from day 1 of the Barbarossa operation , there are bunch of reports from the red army solders and officers about VERY hostile locals, the stalinists solders didn´t go unarmed , and attacks were reported as well 3) economic LR was way much better than during stalinsit occupation, the old people still speak about it 4) no question that LR had the majority support, the LR control own territory very well 5) you didn´t mention that so called partisans (the local call them for the bandits ) WERE PART OF NKVD !!! so called partisans who attack the LR were not the "pissed" locals, exception some local commies who where FORCED IN BY NKVD men. 6) some Jews were active in The LR administration, situation with the Jews is very unclean of cos , very controversial topic 7) Moscow "Liberals" (Chubais Brother ) are in love with the LR , they believe that the LR is a good example that Muscovy can be run as a normal country.

Yes its true. After the death of Kaminsky psrt of them united eith Vlasov army and than they fought against germans during Prague uprising. When they fought against a german SS division hand-to-hand SS were scared and retreated. Just imagine this. You are just a simple village russian guy from Bryansk oblast and you just dont like the soviets, germans came to your town and 3 years later you are killing civilians in Warsaw, and 1 more year later you are fighting against german SS near Prague. Great video BZ. What they did in the Zieleniak camp, Radium institute and Kolonia Staszica during the Ochota Massacre, are among the worst crimes and atrocities of the war. When the remnants of Kaminski's brigade were planned to be folded into General Andrey Vlasov's Russian Liberation Army. Vlasov protested, calling them "mercenaries," and only agreed to include one out of every ten members of the brigade into his army after careful examination.

Excellent, Professor! Distinguishing between the ROA & RONA is one historiographical error many make. Kaminski's outfit had different origins than Vlasov's army. People forget that there was considerable anti-Stalin/ anti-Communist feeling after the Ribbentrop Pact in the Baltics, the Holodomor of Ukraine, and even within Russia itself. The German Nazi movement of course being divided on its racist ideology failed to take advantage unilaterally until 1945, by which time the end was near, and Stalin's wrath against these men and women was weeks away. Thank you once more!

@@shutup2751 As Professor Stefan pointed out, the German Nazi ideology did not come around until 1945 to the Nazi-pragmatists viewpoint. By then, it was too late. The Nazi-German Reich intended a war of annihilation, and only AFTER the 1941 losses in manpower in the Ostkrieg did they realize they needed more than the Hiwi-forces in 1942. By 1943, post Kursk offensive/ Soviet Counter offensives, Germany had lost momentum, and manpower and so increased these ad-hoc Units from Russia, and Ukrainian nationalities. Had the German Nazi's been more pragmatic at the beginning is the big what-if we will never know the truth of.

Delivering superb content as usual ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. It still surprises me how much of war is not black and white but one super confusing mass of shades of grey. Very informative! I knew about this unit from my childhood. I was born in Russia, lived there for a few years, and I like history so much. This military unit was really cruel. However, it's possible to understand everyone, who fought for Germans against bolshevism. Both ideologies were extremely brutal and aggressive. I think, people from the Russian Liberation movement had a right to choose between two evils. My ancestors were neither members of Russian collaboration, nor soldiers of the Red army. My mother, who's Russian, actually, has Hungarian roots, we are Catholics, and during WW2 her and my ancestors were part of the Hungarian Army (allied with Germany).

RONA wasn't only Russian SS unit, the earliest big Russian SS unit was SS-brigade "Druzhina". And I'm not sure that it's possible to say that RONA was more (or "even more") brutal than Dirlewanger-division or some German unit else. I just remind: only in Belorussia without Kaminsky's people more than 2,500 villages were burned by German troops (most of them with residents) and 700 of them never rebuilt again. I guess it is not correct to say that RONA was more brutal than 1. SS infantry brigade, SS kavalry brigade, "travniki" or Latvian Shuma-battalions.

The politics of the USSR occupied areas was far more complex than people realize. Often, the choice of collaboration wasn't based on political philosophy, but on the brutality that people had experienced from the communist system, causing a lesser of the evils mindset. Hitler truly was an idiot for not realizing the manpower he had at his disposal, if he had been but a little better at treating the natives, and making even simple infantry divisions of them. They had a cause to fight for, unlike the Italians, Hungarians, Romanians, etc. Lucky for us Hitler WAS such an idiot, though. Take it easy and ding dong.

Yes, Polish People's Army in the East - the army of Polish peasant, workers, captives, some minor Polish Army officers POWs, which switched sides after 1939. Berling got the job, as he was suited for recruitment following the NKWD interrogations and massacre of Polish POWs in Katyń. When Gen. Anders moved newly formed army in Russia to Palestine, the Polish Communists and Stalin decided to form a new army which would fight alongside Russians. Generally it was under trained and lacking in equipment comparing to Soviets initially, and in first battle suffered very heavy losses, partially because Stalin decided to put inexperienced soldiers under bad and stubborn Soviet commander against well trained Wermacht forces.

And at school I don’t remember if we were ever told about the invasion on Poland or this division. I knew that you will cover this unit one day. Allow me to expand a bit on the lack of military successes of the Brigade, mentioned in the video. After committing their atrocities in Warsaw, RONA was moved to fight sgains Polish partisans in the Kampinos forest area west of the city. There they got their asses kicked, suffering heavy losses especially at Truskaw and Marianów in early September 1944. Also, speaking about collaboration, note that the Russians collaborating with Germans (including RONA) were using the same flag that the current Russian Federation does. Which is something to remember when you encounter someone arguing that the flags of Ukraine, Baltic states and the true Belarusian flag (used by the opposition to the Lukashenko's regime) are "nazi" because they were also used by collaborators (all of them being used way before that, of course).

I read a book about the 44 Warsaw Uprising many years and learned about Kaminski and Dirlewanger’s atrocities, and appreciated how much adversities the freedom loving Poles had to overcome in those days. I see see shadows of 44Warsaw in the Ukrainian cities and I hope for better outcome this time.

Excellent breakdown. Centuries old ethnic enmities exploited by the Nazis. Also a complete misunderstanding of Nazi occupiers of how to win a war by not alienating potential allies. The brutal occupation of Poland astonished some Nazis, but people like Frank, Hoess and others thaught joyride would never end.. But they were brought to justice. It doesn't seem to ever end in Europe. 🙏🙏🇦🇺

I read in Blowback (christoffer Simpson) that Kaminski was executed because he looted properties which should have been returned to the german army. On the other hand, we learn also that: "These troops were among the actual triggermen of the Holocaust, and were particularly active in machine-gun slayings of civilians. Some of Kaminsky’s men were also known to have titillated themselves by photographing naked Jewish women moments before murdering them. Some of the militiamen seem to have enjoyed “before and after” pictures, for a number of such prints were later discovered on the bodies of fallen Kaminsky soldiers. The Germans, however, fearing that premature publicity might wreck their “race and resettlement” schemes, soon put an end to Kaminsky’s picture-taking sessions at the edge of the executioner’s ditch." Quite interesting to learn nowadays when several countries try to rehabilitate such people as Kaminsky or Bandera.

The repulsion from Kaminski amongst his Nazi masters brings Pavelics Ustasha madness ( in the NDH ) to mind,…that is, I’m skeptical about any real degree of German moral or ethical objections to either of them,..it’s been written that German concerns centred far more on wasting precious troop numbers needed on the front line being forced to immerse themselves into the quagmire of the civil wars exploding across the Balkan and Eastern European areas nominally under Nazi occupation.

If the U.S. needed a long drawn out war to get out of the Great Depression, why don't people see this instead of good- guy-bad-guy and put it all on Germany? If things were bad in the U.S. and the U.S. leaders welcomed Pearl Harbor, why can't people see the total picture? A global depression takes a long time to get out of. Personally, I believe there could have been a better way. I hate the cliche' that all is fair in love and war but perhaps it is true. Well done history Stefan...as usual! Also, I have to admit that I see many areas of the United States as being filled with subhuman culture, not subhuman people. But people cling to their convictions of illogical and irrational beliefs. Humans are the bad guys, not the Germans, the Russians or the liberated people on the nudist beach in Zandvoort. Because fanaticism and ignorance is forever busy, and needs feeding. And soon, your Honor, with banners flying and with drums beating we'll be marching backward, BACKWARD, through the glorious ages of that Sixteenth Century when bigots burned the man who dared bring enlightenment and intelligence to the human mind! "Inherit the Wind" 1960...clip with Spencer Tracy.

So disgusting how the narrator slips a sentence to say that there were more Russian than Ukrainian collaborators. What the narrator omits to say is that: Russia doesn’t build monuments to Kaminski or rename streets to his name or has its president officially say that sympathies for Kaminski are a good thing. That’s the difference between Russia and Ukraine as Ukraine elevated Bandera to a National hero.

the best source of information about Lakot Republic you can find here UKposts "Запретная тема: Локотская республика.
