Bhidewada in Pune is where Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule started the first school for girls in India on January 1, 1848. It has been 175 years since that historic day.
The building where the school was set up has been completely neglected.
The area is a popular one. Opposite Bhidewada is Pune's well-known Dagdu Sheth Halwai Ganapati Temple, which is visited by thousands of people every day.
Prashant Phule, the convener of the 'Save Bhidewada Movement', says that despite having declared Bhidewada as a national monument, the government has not taken any steps to preserve it.
