That's maybe 5% counter, 95% just rolling with the momentum of a throw attempt.

It's ironic that Teddy wins with the counter that made him split that world championship. That is the big problem now, these don't deserve a waza ari, yuko & koka weren't useless imo.

I don't understand, when Tasoev pulled this counter against Teddy Rinner people say that it was a beautiful technic and now that Teddy scored the same against Saito they say that this was a soft waza-ari and shoudnt even be count as a score. I think people are not objective when they talk about rinner. + Wether you hate him or love him the guy is very impressive, he is 10 years older than all his opponent and stille throw them (i think only one of his contest ended by shido today) And that was a very good fight, I haven't see someone doing this good in the Kumikata against Rinner in a long time. The next olympic games are gonna be very interesting between Tasoev, Rinner and Saito. (Sorry if my english is not good 😅)

I never complained about IJF ruleset but to be honest I don't really enjoy this type of throw, I wouldn't even call it a throw or a counter, it's just a fall following the momentum. I don't know if they used to do it even before but I started noticing more after the +100 world final Riner vs the russian judoka. If it were to me these "throws" would be No score 90% of the time (sometimes the action is clear and I guess one could argue that would be a throw)

This lousy counter shouldn't be counted as a score anymore. I mean, if you hurt yourself more than your opponent in a throw, it can't be a score.

I don't get the hate towards Riner, I mean, he's been on top, undefeated for about 10 years. He's won it all yet he keeps fighting. Also he's definitely one of if not the favorite to win the Olympics again. He doesn't have an impressive judo for sure, but he's what 34 ? He knows the game and he's hungry for another title...

The hate comes from people like this channel’s owner that have zero judo experience at the highest level. Other than that, Teddy and his legacy are widely respected.
@LeightonsLibrary
@LeightonsLibrary Місяць тому
His judo is entirely based on being way taller and longer than the opponent. It forces his opponents to approach very carefully and attack prematurely when they do get in. His body warps the entire shape of the match and usually results in low quality matches, often ending in hansokumake due to passivity. Anyone who hears about this legendary superchampion, undefeated for 10 years, winningest judoka of all time, etc etc, is guaranteed to be disappointed when they watch him fight. Compare to other legendary judoka - could you say the same thing about Ono or Nomura? I don't hold it against Teddy personally - as a competitor, it's his job to fight to win, and it's not like he chose to be born a giant. But you can have respect for Riner and his accomplishments and still recognize that his judo kind of sucks.
@fortuna9074
@fortuna9074 Місяць тому
@@LeightonsLibrary This is simply wrong. If judo was all about height and reach, people would have it figured it out since a long time and we would only see lanky (and just tall for the heavyweights) athletes on the podium. I think there is a bias against Riner because: i) he has a strong claim to the judo GOAT status and is not Japanese; ii) there is attrition watching him dominate his weight category for so many years (novelty is exciting). If Saito ever dominates the heavyweight category, are people going to undermine his success by mentioning his weight over his opponents? You have Riner highlights videos full of beautiful throws (even on this channel), so I don't know how you could say that his judo is disappointing to watch. In the last couple of years he has certainly been more conservative in his judo, but you have to take into account his age (Ono retired at 31 whereas Riner is 34 and still going) and the fact that he is undoubtedly the most studied judoka in his weight category, so his opponents and their staff have had time to adapt and design strategies aiming at countering him. In the world of ignorant opinions, I guess one can state that Riner's judo "kind of sucks". Thankfully, this opinion is nonexistent in the competitive circuit where Riner is held in high esteem. Without stellar judo/technical skills you simply don't make it at that level.
@LeightonsLibrary
@LeightonsLibrary Місяць тому
@fortuna9074 You don't see it in other weight classes because other weight classes have weight limits. 100+ does not. Some athletes HAVE made careers out of being absurdly tall/long for their class (Bilodid is the prime example), but it's difficult to maintain the strength for good judo if you're cutting to skeleton weight. Heavyweights do not have this problem. This is not complicated, nor is it unique to judo. I don't dispute that Riner is athletically and technically talented, but use your eyes, man. He's 6'8". He's routinely a full head taller than his opponents. That is an enormous advantage. Have you ever fought against someone that much taller than you before? The gripping is absolutely miserable. Riner's attacking range for both gripping and throwing is practically double that of his opponents'. The opponent has to navigate a minefield just to get in on his hips, and Riner is happy to rack shidos up on the opponent and counter his opponent's desperate attacks. I don't blame Riner for using his reach in this way; he's an athlete, and an athlete's job is to maximize his chances of winning. But it sucks, and it's sucked for a long time. Yes, Riner is 34, but this has been his game for his entire career, and people are tired of it. The hate for Riner has nothing to do with his race or nationality. It has nothing to do with him personally - he seems like a stand up guy and a great role model. But watching him fight is miserable. He has a very negative style of judo.
@paulstarstarpaul5700
@paulstarstarpaul5700 Місяць тому
Classic (older) Riner fight against a strong opponent. He gets away with being passive way more than other Judokas due to his standing and because he is a clever fighter. He is just very unthrowable and in the end he pulls out some not very spectacular Wazari by being stronger and pulling of one big attack/counter. Regarding your comment on the Shido game. I agree before being thrown Wazari it might have been safer for Saito to just try and get another Shido on the board (even though that’s pretty difficult because they don’t like giving third Shidos in medal contests). After being thrown Wazari however it was too late to play the Shido game, because there wasn’t enough time, Riner is too clever and they very rarely let the person win who didn’t throw.
@christianmichon1940

I don't see being defensive as being clever... riner would be way more cleverer by leveraging on his physical superiority in ne waza... and no one loops on riner youtube video again and again because he is impressed by his judo style... look at Last antalya performance of nagase and murao and you will understand what makes teddy's style quite boring...

Very unfortunate loss, saito dominated the fight, Riner capitalized on the single mistake he made.. that said, one should have a closer look to Riner’s previous fights in the day (and in many tournaments). Teddy Riner the world champion in Shido Wazza
@fortuna9074
@fortuna9074 Місяць тому
You're cherry-picking the boring fights. In the same Grand Slam, Riner had beautiful throws + ne waza. The reality is that the heavyweight category has always been less sexy in terms of flashiness/airtime than lighter ones. As for shidos, Riner's opponents often avoid fighting and use extremely defensive judo whenever Riner takes a dominant grip... So you're blaming Riner for winning by shidos when I actually think that it's the only fair outcome when one of the competitors is solely focused on avoiding being thrown.

@@dominus6224 Look at the podiums in most categories. The winner is seldom the tallest. In that same competition, Fonseca won in -100kg and the other medallists were all one head taller than him. Ono, Abe, Maruyama and Nagayama are below the average heights in their respective categories. If what you say were true, we would only see tall thin judokas at high level, which is clearly not the case. From a physics viewpoint, being short is actually an advantage in projection sports since you have a lower gravity center. I agree with the fact that removing leg grabs reduces a big risk factor for tall fighters, but it does not make them more dominant.

Aside from Riner also getting counter rolled by the Russian in the worlds and countered on his own sumi gaeshi by the other Russian in the Olympics, Kageura has been the only one to really catch him clean.
