Oliver wanted to start small, so he started with fraud before he moved on to murder. Once he got away with smaller crimes, he moved on to bigger and more dramatic crimes. Farleigh is lucky he was the first victim. Personally, I’m ready for him to come back to Saltburn and take on Oliver! Saltburn 2: Farleigh’s revenge!

i love how Oliver makes it seem like his motive was always Saltburn, and that he was driven by economic resentment, but so many people seem to forget that Oliver is a liar. the one who narrates the story for us, is someone we know is a liar! it’s so good! he was driven by his obsession with Felix, doing anything to keep him close and avoid his rejection. Felix’s fate was sealed when he started to see Oliver for who he really was, he rejected him, and when Oliver realizes there’s no coming back from it, and that he’d be sent home after his party, that’s when he kills him. and it seemed like he immediately regretted it. Saltburn had to become the new obsession, something to blur his infatuation over Felix with. there’s SO many brilliant details in this film. it’s one of those films i’m probably not gonna recommend to anyone, but i love it lol.
@alinachrist8416

Yep the director said the same. He was obsessed with Felix. But he couldn't get him, he decided to go for the next thing. I've heard so many people call this a serial killer movie, which is kinda crazy cuz despite having several murders/assisted suicides here, Oliver isn't a serial killer, at least not in the sense that we would usually apply that term. Afterall, he did leave Saltburn. It is unlikely that he planned like what, more than a decade into the future? He just took the chance lol. The ending is just him pretending to be satisfied with what he got.

So many people don't realize how much time passes in this movie...It starts in 2006 and then when Oliver and Elsbeth meet at the cafe at the end, some people are wearing COVID masks...So about 14 years passes between the time he first leaves Saltburn and returns.

Oliver was a first year at Oxford so that would put him at what 18? Add 14 years and he is 32, the exact age as the actor that plays him. Talk about playing the long game.

Emerald Fennell has said that voyeurism is a big theme in this film. Oliver is clearly a voyeur, always peeping through windows or doorways. The way this is shot turns the audience into voyeurs as well, which is part of why it is so uncomfortable to watch. Honestly, some of the hardest scenes to watch were the extremely awkward ones (Oliver singing karaoke, Felix and Oliver sitting in his parents’ house after his lies were exposed, everyone singing Happy Birthday and then not knowing Oliver’s name, etc).

Did you guys run out of red flags? 😂❤ I watched the film earlier this week, and I gotta say, as a fan of very dark comedy, I loved it - and having read a review where they mentioned Saltburn was rated for adults only, I kinda knew it was not for the faint of heart. In the end, I thought it wasn't nearly as shocking as I expected. Everyone in this film was a nutcase, maybe except for Felix, who seemed to genuinely look for a friend who wasn't with him just for the glamour and money. He thought Oliver was just as genuine, but boy, was he wrong. The plot reminds me a lot about the film (and book by Patricia Highsmith) Talented Mr. Ripley, but taken up a notch.
@LadyScaper
@LadyScaper 3 місяці тому
So, the reviews classed it as adults only? In Canada it’s rated 14A. That means if you are 14 and over you can see it without anyone taking you. If you are 5 years old and your parents (or another adult) take you to a 14A movie, it’s totally fine. (I watched Oppenheimer with a literal toddler behind me. Nothing the theatre could do as Oppenheimer is also rated 14A here.) I was surprised it was rated 14A, but the next rating is a Canadian R, which means no one under 18 can see it and the theatre management will check all IDs. *shrug*

The music cue at the start of the movie tells you how the movie will end. The music is literally coronation music for the UK Monarch. Oliver’s dance starts in his new bedroom, which is the King’s room. This whole movie is about Oliver winning.

I wonder what the red flag count would be, if you guys hadn't stopped. Double digits, for sure, even before we find out everything Oliver did. I watched another reaction where the person talked about interviews the director did. So this is what I understand from that: - The vampire scene alludes to the fact that women's bodies are often demonized in movies and shows, so the director wanted to show a scene where a woman's body, with everything it produces, was wholly desired by someone. - Oliver's plans were step by step, so in the beginning he hadn't planned yet on killing them. He wanted to be with Felix, marry him and become part of the family, and get Saltburn through that. Only after it wasn't possible anymore, did he decide to kill them. - Oliver dancing naked at the end was a declaration of victory and ownership, but even then he would have preferred to become part of the family. So he was happy, but not completely. Also, Farleigh and Duncan are still out there, so Oliver's happiness probably won't last forever.
@AmyAberrant
@AmyAberrant 3 місяці тому
I also feel that Pamela was a main reason that Oliver knew he couldn’t become part of the family. As soon as Oliver turned up, they were trying to get rid of Pamela. That makes Oliver realise that he is dispensable, and they’ll get rid of him too when it comes to it. Also Eddy could be a reason. Eddy was last summer’s guest, and then he was discarded because he got involved with Venetia. Oliver realised that he too could be discarded, so he had to have another plan.

Also, Oliver thrives on manipulating others. He has no one to manipulate now.

And Maurice from the 80s, I think it's free on UKposts. It stars James Wilby and Hugh Grant, who meet at Cambridge and a love triangle starts between them and a worker on James' character's estate. I saw an interview with them about an anniversary of the film's release, James was pointing out how seminal the film had been in terms of gay relationships shown in media and how he got letters from LGBT people who had felt seen because of it, Hugh was completely oblivious to its significance lol

Re-Oliver being queer. He very well could be, and probably is- but i think for him it's more about power. Like with predators, the gender of their victim doesn't usually matter because what they actually want is control over someone (except in certain cases of internalized resentment, like Dahmer, where the whole point was to have power over one sex specifically). I think the lying was part of that for him, it gave him control over how people viewed him and how he interacted with people. Setting up the flat tire and saying his parents were abusing substances, it all gave him control over Felix. Because he could get things from Felix if Felix felt bad for him. If he was just some upper-middle class kid with two sisters and loving parents, he would have felt boring, and, to Felix, he probably would have been. For him, nothing he does has consequence because he's gaining so much through everyone elses suffering.

I loved this film i ended up watching it twodays in a row lol, your reaction was perfect seeing you react to all those scenes was hilarious. It's like Brideshead revisited crossed with the talented Mr Ripley and it was brilliant. My own take was that in the beginning Oliver wanted Felix and contrived to become his friend. He lies about his father dying as he knows he has pissed Felix off due to his complaints about his room and needs to repair the relationship by appealing to Felix's combination of genuine compassion and a latent saviour complex. Then later afrer the visit home he is revealed as a liar and Felix rejects him completely, this is when he thrusts the bottle at Felix as he was hoping he could still win him around and only decides to finally kill him after being rejected. His love turned to hate as Felix was nothing but an obstacle from that point and he decides that if he can't have Felix he will replace him taking everything that was his for himself.

This was gold!! I knew you two were going to be shocked, and your reactions did not disappoint and had me in tears!! I watched this movie at first by myself and felt completely violated haha, but I have enjoyed watching it with others just to see their reactions :)

I loved Saltburn, and I love your reaction video for it , but are you ever going to finish Interview with the Vampire? You stopped after episode five, and haven't posted another in over a month.

Your reactions were spot on and I love you both! I asked a guy friend to see it with me in theaters and he’s still not forgiven me. I was actually with him at dinner afterwards questioning how the intimacy coordinator choreographed that last scene and I was just gesturing with a salt shaker at our table wondering if its length or time on screen that keeps the rating *not* explicit. Not weird at all. 🤓 My brain was scrambled with all I’d just seen (literally) and so my brain went to “how long can a ‘courgette’ be on screen before it’s NC-17 (Also - comedy/horror as the genre? Please. ) Love you to bits!

This was wonderful! You guys slay me. Love this film. Best movie of the year. The performances were perfection. I love Barry K. He was absolutely fearless. The movies about desire. Unbridled desire. Or since Barry’s Irish, maybe it’s just about the Irish finally eating the English. lol. Couldn’t help myself. Said Ollie. lol. Truly you guys are great! (But my favorite film of the year was Red, White and Royal Blue. You guys reaction to that was wonderful as well. Cheers!
