I have owned a 2T Seageate desktop external HDD for almost 15 years (that connects with traditional usb-a) and it still works very well. The speed obviously does not compare to today's ssd but the life of this HDD surely far exceeds that of these ssd ! In particular, I have on this HDD a lot of great high-definition movies (copy of blu-ray without lossless) on it that have file sizes of 4, 5, 6, 7 or sometimes 10 gigs on it, they are read without any problem from a player like VLC in my MacBook Air m2 and their primer is very fast.

Hi. Great video, I am in the market for the Mac Air m2 & was wondering what bearing formatting the ssd to APFS has on transferring files directly from other devices (eg an Android phone or iphone, as I have both and not sure which I'll continue with going foreward)? Thanks for any help you can provide.
@RawansReviews
@RawansReviews 9 місяців тому
Hi, as long as you're plugging your SSD into a Mac, you can read/write to it if it's APFS. Your mac should also be able to read files from your Android/iOS device that's connected to it. So you should be fine transferring data to the SSD. The only warning is, if you might use the SSD on a Windows machine, then avoid APFS and format as exFAT as that's compatible with both Windows and MacOS

Do you think backing up photos and videos and old memories in to HDD is better option than in SSD or vice versa and in terms of longevity
@RawansReviews
@RawansReviews 9 місяців тому
Generally SSDs last longer than HDDs, they're more rugged, less sensitive to drops and don't have any moving mechanical parts that may fail. Lifespan might be affected by number of times you right data on it. For backups, you're not constantly writing so you should be fine.

I really appreciate the very thorough but straightforward explanation. Very helpful for a very low tech person like me.. I'd like to ask your opinion and advice since I'm still not sure what is best for me. I'm looking for something that I can store a backup of all my digital data for long periods of time. Things like personal & family photos and videos. I'm not a professional or youtuber. But I do like to take & keep high resolution photos and videos. I want it for personal use mainly for memory keeping and backup storage that can withstand time. I want it cost efficient but durable as well so I don't have to worry about it getting dropped or wet or data getting lost or corrupted over time. What do you think is best for me to buy? I'm going to base my purchase decision on your recommendation. Thank you so much in advance.
@RawansReviews
@RawansReviews 5 місяців тому
Would you be moving that hard disk around, or could it be static, somewhere in an office or desk? If you're looking for backups, then speed is less important, you're better off getting more storage capacity than speed, for each dollar you put in. That's why I wouldn't recommend SSDs as, for the same price, you can get 2-3 times the storage capacity of an SSD if you get an external hard drive. SSDs are more durable though, and can take a drop and some light water splashes much more than external hard disks. If you envision you might be in such cases, then you might need to bite the bullet and get an SSD. But if you don't feel you're likely to be in such situations, but still would like portability, then a 2.5" external hard drive will give you much more storage for the same dollar value. But if you don't even need portability, then look into 3.5" externals (desktop external). This is larger and requires a power source, but likely to be the best value for money in terms of dollars/terabyte of storage. Hope this helps.
@gem2148
@gem2148 5 місяців тому
@@RawansReviews no I don't need it to be very portable as I'm probably going to store it somewhere I'm not going to move it around much. But i forgot to mention that I need something that can easily connect to my android phone. I have samsung note 10 plus. A hard drive will need a power supply. But will 2.5" external Hard drive also need a power supply or can I directly connect it to my phone using OTG adapter? @@RawansReviews I actually decided to get the Samsung and it gets LESS hot for sure. Samsung claims to have software to control the temp...dunno but it does get less hot. However the speed is a bit less than the Sandisk-still very fast. But I feel that the sandisk gets way too hot. Which other external SSD would be better at controlling thermals? I have lots of good Lacie regular drives(5big docks etc) but from now on I will only get SSDs to do the actual editing. It's the way to go but they have to be better at controlling temperatures. Thanks
@RawansReviews

@@TheFandangovideoguy Controlling temp *could* mean throttling speed, maybe that's why it might be a bit slower? Just speculating here... Of course. But make sure what file system format you use. If you only want to “read” files copied from your PC, on a Mac, then NTFS file format can be read by Macs. But Macs can’t write anything on NTFS (not without 3rd party software at least). If you want to be able to read and write interchangeably on both Mac and PC, then best to use exFAT as both Macs and PCs can read and write to exFAT discs.

Good question. I haven't had them long enough to judge on that, but what I can say, been using the Sandisk for about 4 months, for all my video editing, with no issues so far.

Citing Apple's pricing structures is neither useful or meaningful in establishing the relative cost of SSD technology, because a disproportionately large chunk of Apple upgrade pricing is taken as pure profit.

You’re absolutely right. But citing them wasn’t to establish the relative cost of SSD, but rather to illustrate that getting a decent amount of storage built-in is very expensive-so going lower there and getting an external SSD might be a option.

i have windows how should i format my sandisk?
@RawansReviews
@RawansReviews 11 місяців тому
If you plan on only using it on Windows, then I'd go with NTFS. If you might also use it on Mac, then exFAT as that's the format both Windows and Mac can read and write to.

No reply on sandisk amazon page but samsung reply in regards to replacement is a legalize fuck you with keywords like their own discretion and really big "OR" aka always the shittier option

Dont go with those small conventional spinning hard drives. THEY SUCK, THEY WILL FAIL. opt for ssd drives like this Samsung T series. Save yourself the grief of loosing your data with a clicking spinning drive.

All drives will fail eventually... Save yourself the grief of loosing your data with backups. When did you experience clicking hard drives, btw.?
@xevious2501
@xevious2501 9 місяців тому
@@lw7108 i dont even remember. I know i could open the drives and reset the reader, but with the smaller portable drives its a bit of a hassle. ironically the best means of storing data is via Lto's old school tap media drives.
