FILM DESCRIPTION:
A seemingly ideal day turns disastrous when California's notorious San Andreas fault triggers a devastating, magnitude 9 earthquake, the largest in recorded history. As the Earth cracks open and buildings start to crumble, Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson), an LAFD search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, must navigate the destruction from Los Angeles to San Francisco to bring his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and their only daughter (Alexandra Daddario) to safety.

That was actually a very effective piece of horror in a disaster movie right there, when she runs through the door and shuts it, and the next person who opens it finds that the entire building has collapsed away, and whoever went through the door is now dead.

Honestly, one thing I think people overlook in a disaster movie is the human impact, which is kinda sad seeing as that's what the genre was originally all about. The sheer terror that people experience when a crisis happens, the scenes of death (not always suddenly either...) and injury tend to get glossed over in favor of the spectacle of everything collapsing. I guess it's a sort of 'a million is a statistic' syndrome, similar to the destruction you see in modern superhero movies.

Fun fact: the production designer for this film was Barry Chusid, who previously worked on The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. Now that would probably explain why this film is somewhat aesthetically similar to those two films.

There are videos from the 2011 9.1 scale earthquake in Japan where you can see the buildings visibly swaying back and forth like that. Obviously it's like 5x stronger in this movie, but still. Chilling.

There was a seismologist who said that this wasn’t exactly the most accurate depiction of The Big One, and after seeing this scene, I hope to whatever God there is that she’s right. This, is, terrifying. But props to the actors and designers, I can see a lot of work and effort.

Its the smartest thing to do even if an helecopter is coming or nah, bc if the bulding fall it will fall on the people exiting or going down the stairs, but only go to the roof if the earthquake already started

You're supposed to head to the roof. It's your best chance of survival in a skyscraper in a big earthquake. Interior elements of the building could collapse and kill you whilst making your way down, remember descending could take up to 20 mins in some buildings or more. On the roof there is less debris to worry about and helicopters can come. If the building collapses then it made no difference if you went to the roof or went down lol. You're dead. Nothing to lose so go up if already way up high.

I really enjoyed this movie. Dwayne did an excellent job. He and his movie wife played in "Race to Witch Mountain". They have great chemistry. She's small but she has a lot of heart about her. Good casting overall in this film.

How come every disaster movie has the same subplot? The public safety director is separated, about to be divorced, and he and the missus must go looking for their daughter amidst the wreckage. This is the same thing as "Volcano" (Tommy Lee Jones).

Drifty False, it happened out in Ridgecrest in the desert and was a 7.1, otherwise massive but at such a distance it’s effects are limited.

Pbjplays :D While yes it may seem like it should be coming soon there’s no way to tell for sure. Seismologists have continued to say it should happen anytime since the 1950’s, so whether it actually happens or not us to be determined.

Why do I post Stuff? While it may seem like this is logical, it would be very unnecessary. It is indeed possible the big one won’t happen until we’re all long in the grave. And there’s also the fact there is upwards of 11 million people in Los Angeles and Los Angeles county, and where exactly would they all go? At this point it’s just a threat we live with and we can only hope to hunker down and ride it out when it does occur.
